Who's playing better?

Not being able to see any of the games live. Which recruits are playing better? Holst's or Kennendy's? I know Kennedy has been getting a lot of heat lately, and am just wondered if its his recruits that are playing bad or if Holst's recruits are not playing well? Just wanted to see if we could still blame Holst a little for their problems or is Kennedy just not a good coach anymore?

Doesn't it bother anyone that Kennedy state after he resinged at DePaul that he was burnt out and needed to take some time off from coaching? I have been reading lots of people mentioning that he is just not into coaching t his team. No matte what you thought about Holst at least he cared about the job and this school.

I don't think Kennedy is burnt out. He's having a rough year that's for sure, but he doesn't sound like he's burnt out in the interviews or on the radio. He got booted from last game because he saw the refs doing something towards the end of the game that he thought was cheating the players who were still out there playing hard (Both EWU's players and the Griz players). I don't think a coach who doesn't care would do something like that. He may very well be suspended next game for that...don't know yet. Anyway, here are the stats for the Holst & Kennedy recruits. Read into them what you want..you can look at the whole stat sheet at montanagrizzlies.com You may notice that 4 of the Griz's top 5 scorers are Kennedy recruits. I don't think this should turn into a holst vs kennedy recruit battle though. Holst isn't the coach anymore, so lets hope the current coaching staff can get things turned around and get the Griz in good position to make some noise next year.

Let me know if you find any errors.

I agree with your facts. I'am also a friend of Holt's & coach Kennedy. So I don't wish either bad luck As far as Criswell he would be the first to tell you he wasn't recruited by Don he was being looked at for track & football but his interests were with basketball & thus walked on & as you stated Kennedy recognized his talent and gave him his scholarship.

Actually, Kennedy had nothing to do with Criswell's scholarship. Holst recuited Kevin, sent recruits to Colstrip, invited him on a recruiting trip, and asked him to walk on. The only problem was that he had used up all of his scholarships. The other question was about Kev's ankle and if it would become an issue in the future. Holst promised him a full ride scholarship, if he stuck it out one year without one to redshirt. Talking to Holst and Sampson, they didn't want to go against their word, so one of the last things they did before they left was to get Criswell's scholarship all worked out before Kennedy came in.

If you'll remember, Kevin didn't start a game until halfway into the season last year. I know Kennedy changed his mind about him after he saw what he could do, but I was under the impression that Kennedy was hoping to use Kev's scholarship to get one more recruit on his way in.

Montana Gym Rat Not sure about who gave the scholarship and when. I know Kennedy was very impressed with him during practice. I will ask coach or one of his assistants that would know for sure.

Let's not forget that 4 of Holst's recruits have left the team for one reason or another...incluiding all the redshirts from 2000-2001.

Look at your assist averages for top players and that tells you a lot about your team. From your stats you provided ... 1.3, .8, 3.95, .9, .3, .76 .... what that tells me is you dont' have a team, but 5 guys who play their own game. Talent or not talent that will not get it done not playing as a unit.

Assist to Turnover margin is very low overall as well as a team. I think this team has talent, but they are definately not playing together as a unit from the games I've seen.

You are correct, the Griz have had low numbers for assists this year. They rank dead last in Assists, turnover margin, and assist/turnover ratio for conference play only. I'm not really counting pre-conference, since depending on strength of schedule those numbers aren't really going to tell as accurate of story as the conference schedule numbers will.

Mansell is currently tied for 2nd in conference play for assists per game with 4.56 (Tied with Frank Brown of MSU). The only player with more assists per game is Poole from ISU who is averaging 7.0 per game. Unfortunately that's it in the top 15 for assists for the Griz. No other Griz is averaging more than 1.56 per game. Mansell has really played well in conference. He's the only Griz with a positive assist/turnover ratio in conference (That plays more than 15 mins a game) and is hitting 46.2% of his 3 pointers (Ranks 4th in the Big Sky in conference).

He's going to have to be a big factor if the Griz want to have at least a chance of getting in the tournament this year. In the last few games you can really tell Mansell has become more of a team leader. He's taking more shots and trying to create on offense and trying to get something going offensively. Watching the games this year there have been may instances where their offense has clicked and they played great. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to last. Their offense played very well the entire game against ISU early in the conference season. The passing was creating many open looks especially in the first half. They ended up with 18 assists that game.

Unless pretty much everything goes their way in the next few weeks, and they start playing more together as a team as WILDCAT pointed out, the Griz don't have much of a shot at making the conference tournament this year. They pretty much have to pick up a road win and win their 3 remaining conference home games in order to have a good chance. Lets hope the seniors on the team can step up and get something going for the Griz on the road this week.
