As of now, three-star 2005 prospect Jack McGillis is still committed to attend Washington as a recruited walk-on. In recent days, however, the 6-foot-6, 195-pound shooting guard from Hellgate High School in Missoula, Mont., has received some serious interest from some other Pac-10 schools.
"I'm getting some offers, but I'm still committed to Coach Romar," said McGillis. "I just got an offer from Washington State, and Eastern Kentucky has a scholarship available for me. Oregon State has just started to show some strong interest, too. They asked for some game tape a couple days ago.
"But, as of now, I'm still committed to Coach Romar. He said they didn't have a scholarship for me, but he wanted me to be a part of the team and that I'd have a great chance to earn one next year. Coach Romar definitely wants me. He doesn't typically do this with walk-ons. He's been so good to me, and he is definitely one of the classier guys I've been around."
Despite his admiration and respect for Coach Romar and the Washington program, the possibility of a free college education is still very alluring to McGillis. Although he claims that Washington State and Eastern Kentucky are not options for him, Oregon State just might be an option if they were to offer a scholarship.
"It would take a school with the right academics, the right city, the right coach and a full ride for me not to go to Washington," he said. "I am intrigued with Oregon State. Their program is on the up and up. Corvalis is a nice place, and I've always liked the state of Oregon. We will just see what happens next. Things definitely are intensifying."
At 6-foot-6 and still growing, McGillis is coming off a very successful senior campaign where he averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. He was first in the state in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage at 63 percent and 51 percent respectively. He also shot 87 percent from the free throw line.
Certainly a very good shooter, McGillis does need to gain strength and improve his athleticism, but with his growth plates still open, he hopes to eventually grow to 6-foot-8.
