You were hot stuff. I suppose the rabbit was going full speed too.
Come on Bozeman Hawk extraordinaire, give him the benefit of a doubt!

Absolutely all out!

Actually, it was sitting there, fat, dumb. and happy, munching on a sprig of alfalfa. I was scanning with my cheap scope and saw him way out there in a bit of an open area. I figured, "What the Hell?! and touched off a round. The rabbit was the only creature more surprised than me when he jerked and started flopping around. FWIW: Before my eyes went bad (about junior year in HS), I was a good enough shot to make money hunting jackrabbits for the bounty. (Back in the Fifties.)

That is remarkable! My father and uncles talked a lot about sitting on haystacks north of those huge towns in northeast Montana such as Richland, Flaxville, Peerless doing the same as you say you did. I, therefore, was raised with a rifle in my hands. It was expected of all of us back then. For what it's worth, you were shooting before I hit the teens evidently.

I have a different story of being on top of a hay stack: my friend and I were stacking hay and all of a sudden we had company. We looked down and there was a big rattlesnake at our feet. Two young men made quick work of jumping off the haystack and we wouldn’t go back up again.

Similar story. North of Belgrade/Manhattan in the Horseshoe Hills stacking hay for Joe Morgan or Ralph Biggs, they'd bring a farmland full of bales up to the stack with snakes dangling from the bales and laugh as we'd jump off the stacks and run like hell. My cousins, Tom and Terry quit and went back to Bozeman like a typical lawyer...

Very similar experiences working for Ray Bacon in the Wisdom/Wise River area circa late 80s. Good stuff!👍🏻

As much as I loved fishing that area and below Harrison Lake or whatever is was called on Willow Creek or Dry Creek and 16 Mile, the rattlers always kept me aware of where I was...

Damn, to be young and dumb again!

NO jackrabbit or snake stories worth telling, but do have one on a coyote. Back in the early 70's, while living in Pocatello ( I don't often own up to that one) during the height of the decades high jackrabbit cycle, couple friends and I were out shooting 22's at Jacks. After a fine morning of shooting, we had loaded up in the rig and were headed out of the draw we had been in. A coyote was spied loping along the top of the ridge above us. The brakes were applied , and I was challenged to snap off a shot with my 22. I jumped out, with my trusty 22-Semi Auto with that powerful 2 power scope, snapped off one one round and the yote piled up. No one, ESPECIALLY me could believe it. We paced from where I shot to the dead yote at 123 full paces. No blood, nothing. When we got it home, skinned it, and found a broken back where the 22 hollow point had done it's job. Was a nice big winter yote, so had a rug with a head mount made out of it, and still have it at my sons home today

I, on the other hand, enjoy these types of stories. I remember the Furman-App-GSU rivalry games. Fast forward and it's broken up. Now out here we again get to see Wyo-BYU.
