I haven't been looking at this site for some time, but it is about time that a thread like this was started. Although Irish genetics run strong in my family, the love of heavy peat or smoke isn't my cup of tea per say. Two opinions.
1. You mentioned you like Tequila, you may like Tequila finished in Whiskey barrels. Front side of the sip you get a Whiskey taste and it finishes with the pepper like Tequila. You can get Jose dark pretty cheap and tasty.
2. Monkey Shoulder Scotch is about $40. and smooth as very expensive Scotch.
Everyone has different tastes and hard to give advice without knowing what you like or don't like. Good posts, this is where a good tail-gater can get free tasters from-tail gate to tail -gate. We have been having guys show up with $150-$300 bottles and are not stingy. To each their own and as you said it can be an expensive hobby finding out what a good Scotch, Bourbon, or Whiskey is. The other funny part is Wild Turkey is as flavorful as many big dollar bottles.
