Which 2012 GRIZ players have a shot at the NFL?

Being things are so slow here, let's talk some football, and analyze our talent. With the recent run of GRIZ getting shots, and making NFL rosters, who do you think has a decent, or better shot at making it?

My top 2 are Kistler, and Tripp.
Kistler is still pretty young, good size, strength, and a solid athlete for his size. He is extremely intriguing to me. He has improved steadily in his time here. Having Gragg as a coach certainly helps him a lot. I cannot see many games live any longer, and it is hard to focus on OL, rather it be on TV, or live. Last year our OL did awesome protecting our QB's, and the running game improved a lot. Kistler seemed to struggle a little with the quicker guys, with good strength. What are the keys for him to better his chances? What other OL might be able to get a look?

Jordan Tripp, for me, is the most impressive GRIZ on the field, and has the physical make up as well. The guy is very fast in pads, and has NFL LB speed/quicks. He is good at every aspect, blitzing, coverage, tackling, smart, very seldom makes an error, and comes up with key plays consistently. He is a good long snapper too, that helps his stock too. I really cannot find a glaring weakness in his skills, and physical make up. The only question mark on him, would be how well he recovers from injury? By the reports I hear here, and a few other friends of mine, who do not post on EGRIZ, he is likely to be better than before his injury. He is ready for an All American type season. I hope that is true.

I wish our secondary was not so young. There is a lot of physical talent at Safety, but have we seen enough of any our safeties to have a true indication of their ceiling? Last year, as the year progressed, Hermanson really had me impressed, come the end of the season. Cornerback, if anyone can make a legitimate case for any of them, more power to you. We really have not seen any of them in any extended time.

DL, I am sure we have a few guys that will emerge. I just don't know which ones it will be.

WR-same situation as CB's. Lots of unproven talent, and we need to see who emerges? Take a shot, if you are comfortable. I do agree with Growler was right on part of his comment on our WR thread. We have not seen enough to honestly judge what any of these guys can do.

TE- This always a position , where we have talent, but likely not have a TE drafted. I like Hardy's combination, and tools. I see no reason why he cannot get invited to a camp, just like Pfahler, Beaudin, Middleton, got invites. Haas does not have the weight or strength to get to that level. I am very intrigued by the athleticism Clay Pierson brings to the position. Can he develop enough for rest of his college career to be considered a long shot? He is starting his collegiate career awfully late at TE.

RB-Sorry, just do not see an NFL talent there, yet. If, there were to be a guy to emerge, I like Canada. I just don't see it yet.

QB-I don't see it in of our returnees. If JJ is our starting qb, none of the young guys with the size will able to show their talants for a few years. Unless Rosenbach tweeks the offense a lot, I don't see anyone beating out JJ, other than the worse case outcome, which I don't want to get into here.

For those of you who have seen our incoming FR play, which ones should we be keeping an eye on most? I continually hear great things about Craig, Kidder, and Gamboa, and the incoming OL recruits. For those of you who can comfortably comment on the newbies, can you expand on what and why to keep an eye on them? What kind of progression is realistic for them?

I hope we can have a civil discussion on this, and keep an open mind to anyone, without calling someone out. Let's have some fun football talk on this. :thumb:

Gosh... on the whole roster?

I did a write up a few months back on the 2012 seniors and who has a shot, I had only 1 guy with a chance - Dan Moore, as a fullback.

As for the rest of the team I don't really see any player that I could say for sure would go to the NFL. Usually you'd see a player progress over his college career, I mean if you would've told me Tru was an NFL 3rd rounder in 2008 I wouldn't have believed that - or that McSurdy would be a draft pick either.

I agree with you MTGriz - I think that Tripp is possibly one of the best LBs this team has had in a long time... he could have a shot. Kistler could as a guard for sure, not sure at tackle. I do think Poole and Oiland could eventually get there but obviously need more weight/time in the program/etc.

I also think Hermanson could follow suit with our string of safeties that the Griz have sent to the pros.

"Have a shot?"

Tripp, Kistler, Moore and Hardy will get shots, not sure if any of them will stick. I like Kistler's chances better than anybodys. If he can keep improving on his footwork and agility, he will be a nice OG prospect. I think Tripp is a bit undersized in this age of monster NFL OLBs, but if he can have a dominant year and add a bit of weight he could find himself in a situation similar to McSurdy's. The Fresh and Sophs, its too early to tell, but I like the young talent we have.

Brint, that is part of the fun in this thread. Most fans with some decent football knowledge can name off a Sr, or two, or even 2 year starters as Jr's. I want to challenge some to test themselves more here. I actually believe there are a handful of posters with the football knowledge. and mindset, capable of going out on the limb, on the younger guys. You happen to be one of them, I am trying to challenge, by the way.

A few years back, a few mentioned Tru as an NFLer. After his freshman year, a few began to post he would get drafted, just not sure how high.

It is funner to watch these guys play, when one tries to break down potential, talent, and skills. Also, football is very hard to be know every position well, as for what it takes. It is much easier to judge a skill position player, than lineman. A few egrizzers really understand what it takes on the D and O line. I know, I struggle most with knowing what to look for with linemen. Exactly why, I like Kistler, I usually do not notice linemen, but something stands out about him, that makes me take notice, even when I have not tried to notice.

There is one egrizzer, that actually knows football, but is such a smart ass, he will not take part in this, but sure wish he would. Baller, has his moments in recognizing talent. I think Hammer could breakdown guys, if he wants to. As much as I hate debating, and having threads go the wrong way with a few of the instigators, they too can add to this, when they focus on evaluation, instead of calling people out, or name calling. These are just a few examples of egrizzers capable of giving solid analysis of players, but very seldom do.

I want to hear more opinions, and challenge egrizzers to give it a try. Trying this with Sr's only gets boring. Personally, I want some egrizzers to add to things others may be missing. I am very intrigued by a few of the incoming FR, and have not seen them play live. It be nice to know why their names are being so highly thought of before stepping on the field? Anyone can say, "this guy, or that guy will contribute, or be good." Take it to another level, why?

We all know there are former GRIZ players on this board. I would really love to hear from these guys for their football acumen. I appreciate when they chime in on controversial threads, and add their insights. It be nice to know what the likes of Tyler Joyce thinks of our LBs. I know a few others have stated who they are here, I would love to have a few of these guys give us more insight than the casual fan knows.

Come on egrizzers, get a little bit out of your comfort zones. I don't expect anyone to say this guy, or that guy is a sure fire NFLer. Just drop a few names, and why you think he, or they are capable of it?

That is a good start. :thumb:

I think Tripp is a big time NFL prospect when its all said and done. I could see him being a mid round pick going anywhere from the 3rd to 5th rounds. If he puts up some solid sack numbers it will definitely boost his stock, he already has elite coverage skills for a linebacker, great instincts and possess prototypical size and athleticism. He has the frame at 6'3"-6'4" to easily carry 250lbs without losing any speed or quickness. I see him as a "poor mans" Clay Matthews Jr., especially if he becomes the elite pass rusher I think he is capable of being. I guess Gregorak's system will play a part in dictating that.

Kistler and Hermanson are two others who I think have draftable potential. I'm a huge Hermanson fan, and think he compares favorably to Shann Schillinger, and will continue to get bigger, faster, stronger making him a better tackler, especially in the run game. His instincts and football IQ are off the charts.

I'm not as high on Dan Moore as some, but won't be surprised if he gets a shot as a Free Agent because of his talent on special teams. Im unsure of his ability as a lead blocker and pass protector though. I know he isn't afraid to stick his nose in there and hit somebody, but I just haven't seen him blowing people up as a lead blocker.

I'll go out on a limb for a young unproven guy and say Mitch Saylor has NFL potential. We haven't had a WR with his size/speed/leaping combination. I see him catching a ton of TD's over the next few seasons and getting some attention from NFL scouts.

Lastly I could see Gerald Kemp pulling a Donn Lisowski, blowing up Pro-Day and getting some attention. He is a great special teams player, and is extremely versatile, which will get some NFL teams looking at him. Great size/speed combination.

Yes, finally someone willing to have an opinion.

Athletically, I agree with you about Kemp. I thought long, and hard about mentioning him. The reason I did not, he is a player without a true position. I would love to see what he could do at WR or HB in a system committed to getting him the ball. The offense was heading that way last year, then he got the bad shoulder injury. Physically, he looks like he would make for a few year project to learn safety.

I completely forgot about Dan Moore. Physically he has the make up to be a FB, and special teams guy. Can he stay healthy though? He surely needs to show he can be a great blocker, but our offense does not really allow for much opportunity to show that skill.

After what Lisowski is doing, not much would really surprise me, any more. I pray Donny makes it. That would another great story for a former GRIZ. Speaking of former GRIZ, if Jimmy Wilson takes advantage of the Dolphins putting him in the running for starting safety in camp, his story will get a lot more run.

We agree on Tripp, Kistler, and Hermanson. Hope to see more egrizzers take a shot at this. It won't surprise me if a few of the "in season" know it all's does not give an opinion on this, until later, if any one of these guys don't make. I wish those kind of posters would weigh in on these kind of subjects before hand, instead of after the fact. You know the kind, the guy that makes sure he points out the negative stuff, or when someone is wrong, but cannot/will not give an opinion of who he thinks has a chance.

Great post baller.

I met a scout last night with a well know BIG market NFL franchise who is a Griz alum & he told me directly he probably wont see many of our games this year as there is not enough draft eligible talent in this years senior class...However, he likes what he sees in coming years.

Kistler and Poehls in the future. Moore this season cuz he has an NFL body and desire like Jimmy Wilson (who I was the about the only one who said he was our ONLY Griz NFL'er two year ago). Of course, it'll come down to Pro Day results for Dan since his regular season numbers won't be eye-popping. Remember Dirt was quizzed about playing some FB for the Cowboys too. A lot of NFL clubs like "blocker/receiver" combinations with their FB's... Anybody got a take on how good Dan's hands are??

i originally scanned this thread title as 'which 2012 griz players will get shot?'

i guess a new standard has been set.

Kistler and Poehls in the NFL, I JUST don't see it , not enough talent , toughness. Height isn't everything, and in these 2 guys case, that's all they have, scouts will look past them, sorry!

Tripp, for sure. Not only will he be an absolute physical specimen at 6' 3" 250 running a 4.5 his senior year, but he has all of the intangibles. Plus he knows how to long snap, which is like being a catcher or a left handed reliever in baseball. Unless he is derailed by injuries I see no reason why Tripp will not be playing on an NFL roster in 2014, certainly as a valuable special teams guy but also possibly as a contributing linebacker. Tripp could easily have a long career in the NFL a la Guy Bingham just because of his long snapping ability, and it's certainly possible that he could be much more valuable than that as a true linebacker.

I do think Kistler has a shot at a guard position. His ability to pull will help him in this regard. I think he does need to become more consistent in keeping low on his blocks. But he has the size and agility to compete at the next level.

I also think Dan Moore has NFL potential, although unless he has just a spectacular year, which will be difficult in this offense, he will not be a draft pick.

Like many others I also agree that Tripp NFL talent. However because of his injury he will also have to have a stellar year. If last year's injury affects him at all it will be in that long snapping ability and I think he will have to re-prove himself in that area.

I am not as high on Hardy or Kemp. Of those two Kemp may have a better chance simply because of his versatility. But he will have to play virtually every down to create enough highlights to get NFL notice. Right or wrong he will also have some off field baggage that he will have to overcome. Again, in part because of the offensive system, I just don't think that Hardy will be able to generate enough on the field to get him noticed.

As for Saylor and Hermanson, it is really too early to tell. Neither needs great season's this year but they both need very good season's. I think both will be in this discussion in years to come.

Wow... didn't see that coming from any brainiac on this site. If a footless left tackle who's blocking area is the size of a phonebooth can get looks from a couple of NFL teams, including the Patriots... I sure as hell think two big kids with long-assed arms, quick feet, and natural size and pulling ability can get a look in a couple of years. We stole Kistler and Poehls out of high school... probably the highest rated OT combo to come to an FCS program that year. WHO IS THIS REALLY? JCU?? Sounds like one of his whack-job observations.
