Where The Consistency Comes From

While Tinkle and the coaches deserve considerable credit for the excellent conference consistency of the team in the past several years (and note the frequents quotes about challenging guys at halftime or during the game), the consistency comes from comes from Will Cherry's mental toughness and burning desire to win the conference, host the conference tournament and get back to the ncaa tourney.

Cherry has an incredible desire and will to win, seemingly stronger than other players who of course have a strong desire and will to win. Cherry has been showing his strong leadership in that regard in the past several years. He shows it with his excellent play on both ends of the court, especially when the game is on the line or the team needs some big plays, and what he is presumably saying to teammates in huddles, in the locker room, and on the court. His mental game seems to be equal to his on-court play.

I always enjoy his quotes after games. Very honest and direct. Below are quotes of his from yesterday's game. I've also noticed Jamar saying on occasion that he felt he had to perform well and step up, to take up slack for Cherry (when he was out with foul trouble or whatever) and not let him down.

From the Missoulian article on the last night's game:

“I’m not looking at streaks,” said Griz senior Will Cherry, who had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds against Eastern. “This was just one game; there’s no complacency with us. We still have eight more games left with four on the road. It’s nice to be undefeated in league, but there’s no complacency. I want the Big Sky championship and I want to host the tournament.”

“The second game of the road trip is always tougher,” Cherry said. “It’s more mental than anything. The first couple of minutes they came out hot. That was scary because we weren’t at home. This time their crowd was into it. We made a point to ‘D’ up and get stops and that led to easy baskets in transition and we got a lead going into halftime.”

Good post. Cherry's jersey should be hanging in the rafters at Dahlberg someday. Wish I was able to watch this team live this year, but will be there if we host.

I can't say enough good things about Will Cherry. He's an unselfish, hard-working player, and a great ambassador for the basketball program. I suspect that lots of players are considering and will consider to play for UM because of Will Cherry's example and influence. Mario Dunn will follow in Will's footsteps. Also, imagine how much guys like DeShields, Gregory and Henderson are learning from Will. The entire program is in good shape for many years thanks in large part to Will Cherry.

Will is an unbelievable leader, and talent. He has the other guys ready to lead for the next 4 to 5 years too. Let's not forget the leader that prepared Will Cherry for the job. Anthony Johnson tends to get lost in the shuffle when talking GRIZ basketball of the last several years. As long as I am posting on EGRIZ, and living, I will be reminding everyone which player brought GRIZ basketball back to a higher level, and expectation.

Anthony Johnson deserves credit for everything he did in his short 2 years as a GRIZ. Thanks to Will for proudly building on that foundation. Will's building is far from done. I expect a very nice run to close Will's GRIZ legacy, and SR year.

I know within the last year, he got out of playing the game to pursue other things. I believe I heard somewhere he does want to coach. I would love if the GRIZ brought him aboard when an assistant coaching position opens up here again. He could continue to build on the foundation he helped lay.

He would be a great coach and recruiter

It was awesome! AJ just went off, WOW what a preformance! haha all joking aside that shit was amazing! Just curious though, why wasnt the DEE packed...i saw A LOT of empty seats, kinda strange

I love the attitude Cherry has and hope it can motivate the entire team since UM has two very touch challenges coming up. Both Weber State and, I hate to say it, MSU, would love nothing better than to humble UM. Fans here already are talking of seeding in the tourney. All I can say, Weber at home is very, very tough and the Griz did not perform as we expected in Missoula against MSU....Right now, UM is in the driver's seat but two losses would put them even with Weber so, keep the fire going guys, it ain't over yet....not by a long shot...

Fans are just talking the what if regarding the conference and NCAA tournaments. I see nothing wrong with that. I have said many times all year, Montana or Weber State would represent the conference. I will honestly be shocked, and disappointed if anyone but these schools represent the conference in the NCAA tournament.

I agree. It will all be settled in two weeks...that game at Weber is going to be something....

Last night's game was another example of Cherry's incredible desire to win. While Kareem played very well and carried the team on offense when Will was on the bench with 3 fouls, Will took over the game for awhile after he returned later in the second half. Some of his drives and all of his defense were truly amazing, and then there was the critical 3 at the end of the game. As I said above, Cherry has an incredible desire to win. I don't think I've ever seen a college athlete with that much desire and ability to win. A former UM coached once told me Will's freshman year that Will "has no fear". Even in high school and in his early years (when he wasn't as good of a shooter or scorer), he had the confidence to make the big plays and take the big shots.

Congrats to the Griz. Awesome win. Awesome season. Let's get another one.

Jordan Gregory is ready to assume the "Big Shot" role too. Love watching Jordan Gregory play ball. He is clutch, intense, confident, and leads by example. Jordan Gregory is my favorite GRIZ going into next year. Henderson and Weisner are also confident when it comes to big shots. Henderson does not shoot much, but when he does it is a big shot. Also Gregory is great at denying perimeter shooters open looks. He stays with this assignment as well as anyone can.
