Where does our class rank?

Ursus1 said:
I think right behind teams that beat us on the field this year and ahead of ones we beat with exception of UNC .....seriously I think EWU MSU and NAU out did us in recruiting. Irony

I also think it's pretty funny the dichotomy on egriz that exists: If we take too many out-of-staters, people bitch. If we take too many Montana kids (without stars, thus not real "flashy"), people bitch about the perceived quality of the class. Can't have it both way people.

Where is Goldilocks when we need her!!! Hilarious and so damn true. Bitch, bitch, bitch. Winning would stop that though! I think that will happen with the last two recruiting classes. The question is - how many fans go postal and end up in Warm Springs because they have no patience?

This is an honest question brought by one with admittedly less patience than many. Maybe it should be moved to its own post and if you feel so inclined please do.

So what is the consensus on what defines patience. Please insert patience at your take at the appropriate place in the list for wins/losses in 2017.

9-2 (or better) obviously playoff bound
8-3
7-4 - playoff invitation
7-4 - no playoff invitation
6-5 - beat cats
6-5 - lose to cats
5-6 or worse

I think this is fair request give the what I feel is undo criticism by some to those voicing some skepticism on this forum. Personally I think 7-4 with a playoff invitation would warrant patience but I'm very conflicted going lower that that. But if some of you are going to get your knickers in a twist over some criticism please tell us where you set the bar.

If EWU is # 1 NAU is not far behind.

30 total signees

Transfers

12 transfers including Corey Young a stud RB from Boise State.

HS

FCS' #1 rated HS recruit (Hero Sports). Three 3 stars who all had numerous FBS offers. Top QB in Northern CA.

Guessing that at least 10 of these guys play and have impact this year. Recruited 5 stud receivers expecting to only land 3, and got them all.

8 returning starters on offense and with this incoming group... a ridiculous amount of skill and depth. Nine of the 11 transfers are on D. Built to go big this year.

No doubt NAU will be one of the favorites with EWU and UND.

Ya NAU always pans out...they never blow high expectations.

Last year had more to do with injuries with them. NAU is going to be really good on offense with Cookus. They will be in the running. Good news is that we get them at home.

Yes, they'll be good, and "Run the table" as Mr. Cookus said last year! It's going to be a fun season. Interested to see how the loss Baldwin and Kupp affects Eastern.

Personally, I'd say at least 7-4 with a win in the playoffs. 6-5, I'd want to start looking for a new coach. I like the team we're bringing in next year, and if they do well it's huge because there is a really talented corp of red-shirt freshmen and sophomores that will have shaped that moving forward.

Define what patience is. Should Griz Nation accept another sub par year? No playoffs or conference championships? What are your expectations?

I'm with the others so far.
7-4 or better. Playoffs not required but preferred.
Anything less than that and/or anything similar to the meltdown of the last half of last year and BS should be talking to BW about selling his house.

GO GRIZ!

I think it's funny when people excuse away another team's performance based on injuries, but then want to crucify OUR coach when we have similar issues. Why are we willing (collectively) to give OTHER teams a pass on things like this, but somehow expect our own team to just power through...."next man up" mentality?

NAU beat us without Cookus so no Stitt doesn't get a pass for that. Last year the team underperformed and it was not because of injuries. Did we have a couple of injuries? Yes but we didn't lose a FCS freshman of the year either.

I say 6-5 and beating the Cant's. Why. Because the O-Line is not going to be phenomenal, this will be the first year of a red shirt class and we are working with a new QB. Top that off with a secondary that is inexperienced. There is a hell of a difference between sophomore players vs juniors and seniors. 2018 is a completely different story. If we don't go 8-3 and have a deep playoff run - then Bob is likely done. Look at what Stitt has said and what the last two recruiting classes look like. I have a feeling there is full support for "building the program back up from the bottom". That takes time and patience from an AD that is likely getting blasted after last year. The Griz fell far from grace and had SG recruiting Swiss cheese for an O line and no QB for Stitt's system. Stitt has a plan and it includes good students and acceptable behavior. I hate losing as much as anyone on the board, but I am a realist. Getting back to the top is going to take some time.

7-4 with a playoff bid and beat the cats. This used to be a crappy season and now the reality. :(

What about 2018 nzone? I don't think your expectations for 2017 are unrealistic. Long term I expect an upward trend with the recruits the last two years.

I guess I've been a griz fan way to long to call that a crappy season... College football is a tough business and even teams that can buy the best coaches and have the rep to recruit the best players go through down cycles. We've just been through ours. If the trend is up I am happy. I was not crazy about the Stitt hire but this is actually the year that I will judge him harshly or praise him.

Yeah I'm sure being down out starting center and our best running back didn't affect the teams performance at all. You're right.

What Copper Griz says is exactly how I feel. We could be good next year if the OL and QB fall into place but that is alot to ask and I see it taking another year probably. There are some damn talented players coming up the next few years. Stitt recruited them, and I think he should get a chance to show us what he can do. The last 5 years have been more disruptive than I ever realized they could be. What I feel this team needs the most for the next few years is stability.

Except it doesn't, Copper. We won a shit ton of games under Hauck and people still bitched like they were getting paid for it.

I'd say, get back to us in 2019 and we'll know for sure.

Exactly, this is why some others freaking out (either way to be honest) about recruiting classes being so good or so-so at the very moment is pretty silly.

We see this all the time:

- A few recruits that "look amazing on the highlight reels" never ever pan out
- A few recruits that were under the radar guys without much hype turn into studs
- A few PWO's or just plain walk-ons become all conference guys
- A few guys destined to change the way this team will be never play a single meaningful down as a Griz

Give it a few years. I like this class, heavy on tough Montana kids with some immediate attention to a few areas that need it the most with the exception of CB, which I assume the Griz will go hard after in the summer with JuCo's and/or drop downs - like they did this last season too.

I'm a Cowboys fan. Jerry Jones once had the patience of a crack addict with a love of sugared cereals but has shown amazing patience with Jason Garrett. The constant coaching turnover before Garrett didn't bring many wins or a Super Bowl. Am I happy with the Cowboys overall record since Garrett took over? No, but I guess the arrow is pointed up now.

So maybe I'm more patient than most, but with Stitt's young QB and O-line coming in, next year won't be about the record. It'll be about progress in talent, schemes, and player buy-in. If we move ahead in those areas, then we'll be happy in 2018 and beyond regardless of our record next year. If we stagnate in those areas, then I'd support 2018 being the "hot seat" year in terms of record, with 7-4 being the lowest that would be acceptable. But being a fan, and feeling like we have some good player talent and coaching, I'm expecting a lot more over the next few years!
