When Will Montana Hire a Good Coach?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Tinkle or no Tinkle, a good staff consists of one great x and o's guy, one bad ass, 2 to balance everything out, and all be good recruiters and motivators.

I for one am good at all but the x and o's. Then again, It maybe more difficult to work with college kids. I honestly do not know.

Honestly though, I feel there are some very good and fair fans on this board, and a few that do nothing but bash. With that said though, most of us tend to agree on alot of things. How is it certain fans can pick up on these things that for me that appear obvious to a knowlegeable fan? Yet the coaching staffs either notice it but not changing things or just not seeing things.

I know coaching is not easy and all coaches at times have challenges, and some take longer than others to improve certain things. Honestly to GOD, how difficult is it to demand your bigs play inside offensively? Then if they do not, bench them! Seriously, how can a coach not demand these changes?

Is he afraid of losing someone or what? Is it a sense of faithfulness? What is it?

Maybe we should just start Sharp, Hasquet , Selvig and Qvale with Johnson at the point. There isn't enough room out there on the perimeter for all those big guys, somebody is bound to just get shoved into the paint. ;)

At least Hasquet and Selvig would truely be 2 and/or 3 with that line up.

I love Jordo but if he isn't poundin it inside in the first 3 minutes of the game tonight it's time for Selvig. What little I've seen of Selvig is that he at least tries to battle for rebounds and has his back to the basket sometimes.

I have very little problem with Jordan on the defensive end this year. He is actually better on that end this year, and he does his fair share of defensive rebounding. I am disappointed in how we use him offensively when he is slumping from the perimeter. The way we use him, he is never in position to rebound or cause mismatches, which how I feel he should be used.

I hear ya ... Hasquet can do it for the life of me I dont get it either. Easterns big guy is a hot ad cold guy and has been in foul trouble . We should be able to run all 4 of our big guys right at him, all night long. I bet it doesn't happen though.

The thing is, the GRIZ actually do a great job about every other game inside. The EWU game should be their turn to do that. I want to see it every game though.

I am new to the board, and do not want to come off as being a coach basher. However, I must say that I have watched Tinkle's teams play many times since he became coach, and am very disappointed with their passion for the game, their matador defense played most of the time, and the lack of adjustments made by the coaches during the games.

So many Griz fans have hyped Tinkle as being a great recruiter. Yet, his teams always seem to underperform their potential. This can only be because of two things. One, the recruits are not nearly as good as they were hyped to be. Or, the coaching is not bringing out the potential and developing these kids. It may be a combination of both. But, make no mistake, something is not working for Grizzly basketball under this coaching staff.

The momentum of support from the fan base which peaked under Larry K, is but a distant memory now, and getting worse all of the time.

have to disagree on one point: that larry k built the fan base to some incredible peak. he didn't. he built a team that came within one great half of making it to the sweet 16, and the reaction from the montana fan base was pretty much a collective burp.

the peak attendance for montana basketball was 30 years ago, before the incredible media explosion (especially cable tv and the "internets"), before montana became a football power, back when we had the best player in the history of the school, micheal ray richardson, and surely one of our best coaches, jud heathcote. just as it took a star (dickenson) and a great coach (read) to ignite the football tradition, so too will history have to repeat itself for the basketball program.

do we have the coach? jury out, but the length of the deliberation a mounting worry. the star? will cherry and a.j. are gonna be a dynamic duo next year. but a micheal ray? not even close. that may have been a once-in-a-lifetime event for the montana athletic program.

meantime, the football program keeps winning, keeps providing exciting stars, keeps sending these stars on to the pros (even montana kids) and keeps the montana basketball program in a tall dark cold shadow.

Well, City, you are correct....back when Heathcote was at UM, I was a rising executive at a major Vegas hotel...(yes, before the corporations). I remember one day, the odds makers posting their days plays...I commented about Montana and the chief odds guy, now made famous in a classic movie about Vegas, turned to me and smiled and said...."that Montana team is for real...they have a shot at making to the end"..well, they didn't do as well as that, but the game they played is still talked about today on this site.....I'd love to see and hear someone praise the Griz like that....wishful thinking is about all Griz bball fans have...maybe, the big teamsn have the franchise players and coaches sewed up....but, somehow, college ball is just not as exciting as it was....guess I'm getting old....

Like Tinkle or not i think he is in the wrong regarding Hasquet. He either

A. is not telling Jordo to play inside offensively, which means he cannot see what needs to be done to achieve the teams potential, or
B. will not bench him if he is not obeying, which i dont think tinks is capapable of doing due to his good guy nature

Hasquet is playing what looks like a very selfish brand of basketball much worse than dlouhy a couple years back. Tinks is the common denomanator here his teams lack discipline. if he is not doing what the team needs than sit him down til he will! Four 3's to three 2 point attempts is not what this team needs from its 6'9" 245 pound SR power forward.

Welcome aboard, I hope you are not someone that just using a new screenname. Anyway, I have always supported Hasquet, but this year I am frustrated and upset to no end with his play, or lack thereof.

I could not agree with your Hasquet assessment more. If you follow egriz much at all, you will see since last years recruiting class I have been hard on the GRIZ for lack of an inside offensive presence.

I am a true new guy but have been reading Egriz for a while and i am not here to bash anybody. I loved the way Jordo played last year when he was one of 3-4 guys who played hard everynight but it seems he has a deep desire to be a 6'6" small forward this year.

"He" is telling Jordo to get to the post, Jordo does on occasion, but fades when the ball doesnt come to him. Benching Jordo for not posting up harder isnt the answer, as I would say he's a damn good player regardless of where he is on the floor (Boarding, Defense, etc).

Welcome to the world of confused and frustrated fandom Tarheel. The only way we can afford to have Hasquet launch 3's is if we can fill the post with consistent offensive play from Qvale. He isn't there yet so unless Jordo hits 60% every game we will continue to be a 500 or even sub 500 team and I have to believe even a grade school coach can see that.
Erghhhhhh.....I'd like to see the coaches give awards each game for the post player that collected the most 3 second calls. Make them stay in there until the refs kick em out, over and over again until those 3 second calls were are biggest problem.

Selfish? Ask Dlouhy, Criswell, Stauds, Strait, AJ, Qvale, Jack, Martin, Selvig...(did I miss anybody important?.. Oh...Tinkle, or any of his assts.) just how selfish Jordan is. What all of you are failing to realize is that Jordan spends a lot of time down on the block, but when he doesn't receive the ball, he moves...gets the hell out of there and continues to run offense. He happens to play a position in their O that leaves him open from 3...and he can hit'em. He distributes the ball, looks for open teammates, also creates for teammates. Led the team in assists @ ISU and Weber. Careful when you call him selfish. Go to a practice, watch him work. You guys bang on him for casting from 3? Other than Stauds, who'd you rather see taking those shots? Jordan is leading this team in boards, second in scoring...and will graduate this Spring top ten in Griz history in both...hell, he may even make it in career 3's, haven't seen the list, though. He isn't selfish enough (in my opinion). He's a four year starter with the credentials listed above who does not demand the basketball...he trusts his teammates...period. We'd all like to see him get his 20 and 12, but with AJ at the point, it's just not going to happen...deal with it! It's clear (and fine) to me that more effort is being made to get AJ his, and he's answering the call. You all call for his head like he's not doing anything out there.

Regarding '"he led the team in assists at ISU and WSU" . ...ahhhh...we got blown out ....did you watch those disasters? HORRIBLE basketball...horrendous ...the worst...

Late_addition - Hasquet is shooting 27% from 3 point range in conference. Are you OK with him launching three's? In the games I've seen, Hasquet does Not spend a lot of time down on the block. As another posted pointed out, he's down there for a couple of seconds, then it's off to three point range for a long jumper. Something is seriously wrong with how a post player is being used if they are shooting mostly jumpshots from outside. Hasquet in conference is at 35% FG percentage.... That's very low for a post player. Qvale has struggled offensively inside in conference, and he's still shooting a higher % than that. It's much easier to double team a post player too when there's only 1 of them down low.. Anyway...from three point range, I'd rather see Taylor, McGillis and Stauds taking the threes right now. We need Hasquet in the post.

I don't think he's selfish... but I do have an issue with our senior power forward shooting more jump shots from outside than he does from within 10 feet. He's very talented when playing inside. He has the athletic ability to be a Great post player that just takes over games. We saw some of that his Sophomore year.

I do realize the loss of CET has made it more difficult for our guys to get the ball in the post. CET may not dazzle people with high scoring games, but he's a damn good point guard offensively and defensively. Our 4s cant just give up on playing inside though because CET isn't on the court though. We had them wandering outside too much when he was playing...now that he's not getting minutes, we need them to have an inside presence even more in order for this team to have a chance of turning things around. There are other people on the floor who will get them the ball if they are patient. Even if they don't get the ball, at least then they will be in position to try for an offensive rebound when the shot goes up, instead of heading the other direction since they have no chance (being out at the 3 point line).

have any of you basketball geniuses ever heard of the term "pussy whipped"? that has one hell of a lot more to do with Jordo's less than inspired play than anything Tinks has said or done.
