What's your realistic expectations Saturday?

I have 3 DVRs in my house and recorded the cat games on one. Noway do the cats have an edge in talent in this game. IMO they have the edge at one defensive end spot. Overall team speed goes to Montana. The weber game showed this as well as Northern CO. SUU flat out punched the cats right in the mouth and the cats couldn't respond. The only way Montana loses this game is if they show up like they did in Flagstaff. I expect close to 200 yds on the ground and 225 in the air. msu will find it difficult to run and dm will have to beat The Griz. Isn't gonna happen folks. We don't turn the ball over we win thing going away.
Go Griz!!

Brint,

Aside from all that Denarius McGhee has accomplished and done for the MSU program, would you really take him over JJ, assuming he were healthy. Take all the emotion and fear of being called a "homer" out of it, can you really get there?

I cannot, and have been a bigger proponent of DM than most.

What has McGhee done more than jj? If I recall right jj has won the only head to head they faced, which was at msu, and jj has taken them farther in the playoffs. I'm not sure on this but I'd be willin to guess that jj also has a better winnin %. You can look at mcghees stats and that's great and all but what really has McGhee done?

Absolutely valid points

All I am saying is that there is a sentimental effect when talking about McGhee. He is often credited with “resurrecting” the Bobcat program, and is undoubtedly one of the two best MSU quarterbacks in the last three decades. He’s a four-year starter who has re-written some of their record books. For that reason, he is put on a pedestal, fairly or unfairly. Whatever your opinion, he has been a great player for the cats.

That is why I said “taking the emotion out of it” in my question to Walberg. If you just took it at face value, right now, I cannot see taking DM over JJ, healthy or not.

Yah I'm not trying to disrespect DM. He is a phenom player I just think JJ is as well. It's hard to say and I honestly would probably say a health DM is better than a healthy JJ but not by much.

I agree with the most on the QB comparison. I'm probably the single biggest DeNarius McGhee Griz fan there is, but he seems to have a confidence problem right now, which shocks me. I've been close to having a heart attack from Griz' games all season long, and I fully expect this game to give me the big one.

Good post Havre. I believe the reason the Irish Lad has looked tentative is his injured shoulder. Both physically and mentally he has not been the same since going down in that SMU game. He has looked pretty good at times but he's no where near the same player. I may be wrong, but I suspect he never had a chance to properly heal. To some degree that is affecting his play and ultimately making him less decisive in his decision making.

So this year is Jordy's best year, I pulled his stats for 2013 and 2011:

2011: 2400 yards passing / 185 pass ypg / 21 TDs / 9 INTs / 506 rushing / 4 rush TDs
2013: 2750 yards passing / 250 pass ypg / 27 TDs / 4 INTs / 106 rushing / 0 rush TDs

Then I look at McGhee's career

2010: 3163 passing / 264 pass ypg / 23 TDs / 6 INTs / 181 rushing / 2 rush TDs
2011: 2799 passing / 215.2 pass ypg / 24 TDs / 12 INTs / 340 rushing / 5 rush TDs
2012: 3154 passing / 243 pass ypg / 24 TDs / 11 INTs / 264 rushing / 5 rush TDs
2013: 1933 passing / 193 pass ypg / 8 TDs / 4 INTs / 196 rushing / 4 rush TDs

---------------------

So as I look at these stats obviously we see McGhee is more of a consistent rusher, however one could argue that his mobility (much like JJ's in 2011) also wound up with more injuries that have hampered the way he plays.

Give me Jordy Johnson any day of the week. He's having a stellar season, it it weren't for Vernon Adam's insane season Jordy would probably be the front-runner for league MVP on offense.

As for why I'd give a healthy McGhee a slight edge, I was thinking of the matchup, the Griz have had issues with mobile QBs this year, McGhee has 2 wins against the Griz already, and he's more experienced seniors operating with him in the offense. I don't mean that as a statement on who is the better QB, b/c I think that's Johnson.

johnson has been a ~50% passer in bsc play this year, and contrary to maroon-colored belief, most of the incompletions are due to inaccuracy, not dropped passes or throwaways.

as for my realistic expectations for saturday, i realistically expect to not be able to see the game, as it doesn't appear to be online, i don't have t.v., and i don't live somewhere with bars that show a lot of college football. i blame engstrom.

Uhh... JJ's passing % is way higher without drops lol.

One reason JJ pass % is so low is because he throws away a lot of balls instead of a sack. That is one big problem McGhee has in my opinion, live to play another down. It's smart football. JJ understands the game, I don't believe if he was in the same situation last week in bozeman, that he would have ever thrown that check down.

The Griz win this one. One under appreciated player is Shaw. How many great Griz teams were hampered by a sub par punter? Shaw turns the field and we pickup 15-20 yards. Although out kick coverage has been a bit generous at times, those ultra high 45-50 yard punts have really helped get us out of jams this year. I give the Griz the edge in both defense and offense. The season stats don't mean as much to me as the past few games and clearly the Cat offense is stagnant while the Griz defense is improving.

about as far northeast as you can go in the u.s.

as for drops affecting johnson's stats, i think this receiving corp is about the same in terms of dropped passes as those in most years. johnson has thrown it away quite a few times, but all the other quarterbacks have that and drops included in their completion %s, too. i'm not saying johnson is bad, just that he's been relatively inaccurate this year.

"....about as far northeast as you can go in the u.s."

Guessing Estcourt Station Maine or Barrow Alaska. Not sure how that works, would more North make up for less East?

I don't think this one is close. I guess we'll see come Saturday. Both MSU and SUU struggled mightily with Weber. WEBER!!!! We destroyed weber without our starting QB in the second half. I know its hard to compare teams in regard to who they played, how much they won by.....etc, however, I think this Griz team has played a much harder schedule, and has gutted out tougher wins, and is now hitting their stride. In 2011 we made that semi-final run after struggling with D2 western Oregon, after which we throttled both weber and the kitties. Fast forward to this season and the similarities are glaring. We haven't played "great" football yet, but have shown flashes of brilliance. The USD game was a gutsy win, followed by a blowout win over weebs, which is very similar to the progression in 2011. We have the Same QB as 2011 and we have one of the same running backs. Several of our defensive guys played in that game as well. Call it a gut feeling, but im pretty sure this team turned a corner the last two weeks, whereas the kittens have taken several steps back. Griz win big, and I hope to be saying that I told you so come Sunday!

GO GRIZ!!!! Send #9 packing with no playoffs, one last loss and a bounty of tears

The Griz should roll in this one. The only unit that has been playing well for the Cats is their offensive line. The defensive line can't hold the line of scrimmage, the linebackers are being gap sound in their run lanes, the receivers can't get open etc. etc. The worst part is that I haven't seen any fight out of the team the couple of weeks.

The Griz have been giving it their all and it show on the field. It is going to be a blow out for the Griz.

Could you possibly find a bar or restaurant with the DTV sports package? The game should be on either Dish's or DTV's sports package (DTV has it on 687). Just a thought.
