What's so good about moving up?

The downside in the big picture is what if the Griz get locked into the third tier of D1 football and don’t ever get invited or have the opportunity to “move up” even when there’s a second College Football Playoff for the non Power 5?

That’s on the table. It’s why NDSU didn’t just wait. They are betting that the $17 mil they paid will be a screaming deal in a few years.

I understand the finances are way more challenging. I just don’t have the stomach for watch the Griz beat Northern Colorado and Portland State annually forever more.
Getting associated with or locked into a weak FBS conference or the remnants of a once better FBS conference would likely be a disaster or disadvantageous too. Like going to the WAC years ago would have been a disaster.

I don’t see $17 million and no early tv revenue ever being a screaming deal for NDSU. NDSU was in different situation. Fan base interest was declining due to so many championships. We will see how much money they can actually raise for this move and for NIL in the next 6 or so years.

I can’t see UM being able to raise big money. Don’t know where it would come from.

For what it’s worth, the G6 it sounds like currently has no interest in leaving the CFP and creating their own playoff system. I recently talked to someone high up in Colorado State’s athletic department who said their prerogative is to stay eligible for the top level of the CFP even if that means they have to move up conferences out of the Pac.
It is more about the P4 leaving, not the G6 leaving.

The best thing the Griz can do is become the new NDSU and stack championships at the FCS level so they get invited to a preferable FBS conference like the Mountain West instead of having to pay their way into a poor conference like Sac State to move up to FBS.

I like all of the games. I'd had to seen UM football ruined. I'd hate to see even more expensive tickets price more people out of going to games. I can't imagine the students would go for higher student fees for football/athletics. There was a near riot last time those fees went up.

I'm curious...how long do you think it will take the Griz to stack up enough championships to become the new NDSU and even if/when that happens why would the Mountain West allow UM to join for less than the Bison?

I think that if we were going to move up, we should’ve done it when the Pac 12 or 10 or whatever it is they call it now, had open spots. We need to think Big if we’re gonna do it. We have better attendance than Wazzu!

We can’t scale all the way to the Pac, it would be a lot more expensive than the MWC.

So you think attendance is the key criteria in a move-up offer and decision. Got it.

Fargo - Moorhead's population is 268,000 and the DMA is 113th.

Fargo/Moorhead have Sanford Health, NDSU, VA Center, Microsoft, BCBS of North Dakota, Innovis/Essentia Health, U.S. Bank, Doosan Bobcat, CNH Industrial, Bell Bank, and Scheels

What are the large corporate presences in Missoula?

Missoula needs to leverage the UM and recruit corporations to Missoula. I know that will take a change in mindset of the progressive left but the benefits outweigh the harm.

Need to get the difference makers in Missoula aligned, engaged, and paddle in the same direction.

I don't want to see 268,000 people in Missoula. There are already about 15,000 too many.

What about the large corporate presence in Billings? Billings used to be a Griz town and has the most corporate presence in Montana.

Winning 2/4 by 2030 will do a lot toward getting invited to the Mountain West. I didn’t say that they would add UM for less than NDSU. UM has plenty of wealthy alumni. Winning multiple championships would probably make them more likely to fund the program.

UM is located in Missoula and students go to Missoula for school. Corporate presence in Billings is irrelevant to Missoula if you are trying to create the ecosystem UM needs to move up to FBS

You don't need 268,000 people in Missoula but, in order to move up, there will be more people in the area. However, they could be in Bonner or Frenchtown or Huson.

If it were that easy to stack championships why has it been 20 years + since the grizzlies have gotten one?..

If U.of Montana has plenty of wealthy alumni why don't they pony some money up and take the initiative that NDSU did?

Do you really think NDSU success is why they got the invite? I have no idea so just asking. I’m guessing it comes down to $$ just like everything else in college football.
