WHAT??

This verbal warfare is ridiculous. Both basketball programs have signature NCAA tournament wins. But to be honest, in the history BSC basketball, there was only one program somewhat noticed more than regionally. That was Idaho in the 80's. As much as any other BSC fanbase would like to brag about this, sorry but that is the only program to get national attention and recognition beyond the normal.

Idaho? There have been only 5 teams to finish the season ranked in the AP top 25. It aint just Idaho:

Associated Press Top 25 Final Season Poll - Big Sky Teams
1969 Weber State 17th
1971Weber State 20th
1972 Weber State 19th
1973 Weber State 18th
1980 Weber State 17th
1982 U of Idaho 8th

Since 1982 no Big Sky team has ever finished a season ranked in the top 25. The closest team since '82 was the 2003 undefeated Weber State team who finished 30th in the AP poll.

Also, the 1982 Idaho team beat WSU in the big sky title game by 2 points. You can even watch it on online.

WSU seeds in NCAA Tourney seeds since seeding started in 1979:

7, 7, 9, 14, 14, 12, 15

WSU has the most Big Sky first team players, MVP's, titles, NBA players, biggest arena, highest attendance average, ncaa appearances, most wins against ranked schools...is this enough to be considered the best big sky program. You can't win a FCS title in DI bball if that is ur reply.

I have to say one of the most exciting games I have ever watched in Griz BB history was the Griz beating Idaho 53 - 51 in 1982.

How many losses did Idaho have? Cuz WSU was a 4 seed and almost beat em in Moscow for the title game.

Smack? really, does anyone else think this is just him saying, we didnt play well agienst weber. We will see them again and play better. What else would he say??? just wondering :?:

Curious...do you actually read all the posts on the WSU forum? According to you, there aren't that many threads or posts, so shouldn't it be pretty simple for you to read all the posts? If you did read each post, you would see that not every Weber fan writes bad things about UM, but that some have actually praised the team Tinkle has assembled, and also, is quite pleased with your incoming recruits (impressed). Why are we arguing over who is known better? Isn't it better that the Sky is well-rounded, and loaded with a number of good programs.
I for one, am pretty happy that the Sky has a number of quality teams again competing in basketball and football. The more competitve the conference the better the rep. of the Big Sky, which ultimately benefits everyone. This argument about who is know more is stupid. I'm glad that UM has a great football tradition and I know that the basketball program has had a number of really great coaches and players come from it. While, Weber's football program, granted, hasn't always been the best, but still has had it fair share of great players and coaches. Both schools have experienced big wins, which ultimately helps all the other Big Sky programs and schools.

(just to say it, I really think the Sky needs Cal Poly to join, and of course being from Utah, I'd like to see SUU admitted. I'm sure most of you Grizz fans would definitely disagree with me on that one.)

Didn't the Grizz end that season with 20 wins?? I remember that there were a couple of 20 win teams in the Sky that year, and Weber wasn't one of them :( . That wasn't one of Weber's best seasons, they were rebuilding, but still dangerous.

i dont care what you say. Montana football is talked about on espn...not often but if you asked which university do you know more about................MONTANA or Weber State....... MOST will say MONTANA....very few will say weber state. You go anywhere east nobody really cares about and west anything at our level. But once again if you think they know more about weber than montana....overall as a school. MONTANA gets the nod.

no i dont read every post to tell ya the truth.....because i four posts down i get into stuff from a year ago (in the football) and in basketball most of it is pretty fun and interesting to read. i liked it. I was just wondering how you all got smack talk from what AJ said??? i respect weber to tell you the truth they are prob my 2nd favorite team in the conf. i was just really curious on how AJ's comments were smack. It was like you were trying to hard to find bullitin material. i think its great to have weber and montana in the conf. BUT its is hard to say that Weber state University is more well known than Montana. I have been to quite a few places and seen massive turn outs of griz fans wearing colors. Not at a event. but just everyday activities. Weber i have not seen as much of. i have seen more NAU and Sac.st gear. Im not talking about home state either. im talking about in flordia or cali or texas or tenn. or NY

Yeah they talk about Montana when the FCS playoffs are going on, but thats it, I watch ESPN to, and they never talk about Montana.

Is there a national tv commercial that talks about Montana's football, like the one that comes on every year during Tourny time about Weber State's upset of Michigan State and North Carolina?

I was actually watching ESPN 2 days ago, and they were talking about a player from some team, the name escapes me right now, but it wasnt a really big School, and this player was leading his team and they led their conference, and the one player that the ESPN guy said that player reminded him of...was Harold THE SHOW Arceneaux.

Like Mentioned before, Weber's upsets over Mich St and UNC get more tv time, than UM's national titles.

Finally a sensible post on this. For the record, I agree with you but the last part. I would love to see NDSU and SDSU added, or Denver, if they ever added football again.

This is the kind of quality teams we need again in BSC basketball. Was this the high point for BSC basketball as for quality teams and conference depth? One thing I think WSU and GRIZ fans can agree on is, both teams have bright futures. I can only speak for myself, but I am impressed by the likes of Lillard and Bullinger for WSU. I am sure they have some other good players in the waiting too. Maybe WSU fans can fill us in what and who they expect of their younger players the next few years?

As for the GRIZ, Tinkle has assembled a very deep, versatile, and talented team the next 3 to 4 years. Next years GRIZ will be very deep.

Guards- AJ, Staudacher, Stockton, Taylor, Cherry (will be a freshman)
Forwards- McGillis, Selvig, Banny, Woods (another incoming Freshman), Hurley, Ward and Digs (both Freshman Redshirts)
Centers- Qvale and Huchinson (incoming Freshman).

That is a very talented 14, Hurley and Banny will be hard pressed for PT, depending on which Freshman Redshirt or not.

Lillard and Cherry are both talented guards from Oakland. It will be fun watching these 2 go at eachother for 3 years. WSU fans, please give us some insight on your future players. I want to know and secondly it is much betterthan the verbal war. I actually like WSU and if the GRIZ do not represent the BSC this year, I want WSU to represent. I do not want reason not to pull for them if they win the Conference.

From what I see based on coaches, recent recruiting...WSU/PSU/UM will be the top teams for the next few years. Probably even NAU will get good again.

NAU has issues. They are in some financial hard times and if they drop a sport, they have to drop down to DII.

As much as i hate to do this i'm gonna have to side with the Weber fans as far as recognition goes. There bball program is legit and unlike football we actually play for the real "National Championship" in hoops. The odds of a Big Sky team winning the national championship are about as good as the Griz football team beating Florida. I take pride in the fact that in basketball both us and everyone else in the conference play GOOD teams. In football we play in the shitty as FCS which no one outside of montana really cares much about. Our basketball team had some brass goin on the road and taking on america's best this year in Duke and Washington. Weber has had some wins against some of the best programs in america in hoops and for that they deserve their props. Our fan base at UM talks up our football team so much it actually annoys me and don't get me wrong i'm proud of what they do consistantly year in and year out but ultimately no one in america cares cuz we play shitty teams. Even Richmond the national champs in FCS wouldn't win more than 4 games in the BCS. Lets be real here and put it into perspective. Weber having success in basketball and winning tourney a tournament game or 2 is way bigger on the national stage then winning the FCS national championship because lets face it our football teams would get stomped in the BCS. I have said for years that the Griz should move up and play in the WAC then we could really see how good we are and i actually think we'd win a few games but no more than 4. As a kid from Boise i'd love 2 see the Griz move up and try 2 pull off what Boise State did in the Fiesta Bowl then we'd have something 2 brag about. Because honestly Boise State won a national title in the FCS and hardly anyone mentions it because its not relavant on a national scale. Beating Oklahoma was a statement even though it wasn't a national championship it proved a lot and i think webers wins over MSU and North Carolina in hoops are on the same level. I dunno just my thoughts GO GRIZ!!!

On the national stage, Weber is best known for making it easier to marry more than one wife than it is to buy a drink... :o

Your right, this debate was pointless, both our fans have the right to be proud of our respected programs, and should be proud of the other for the national attention each has given the Big Sky.

Anywho,

I do know that Weber is in the process of recruiting a 6-11 205 pound center from Hartland Wisconsin who will graduate from high school in 2010, His name is Ben Mills, he has offers from 10 different schools, including Indiana State, Loyola Chicago, Texas State, Wisconsin Milw, Florida Gluf Coast U, North Dakota, Ball State, Tulsa, Utah State and Weber State. Hopefully this guy will show some class and turn down USU's offer and come play at Weber, cause nobody likes the Aggies.

We also had 2 High School seniors who signed their national letters of intent to play for the Wildcats, in 2009/10 along with 1 junior college transfer.

Byron Fulton, 6'7", 230 lb forward/center from (Saint Mary's High) Phoenix, AZ, has signed letter of intent to come to Weber State. Fulton is rated as a 74 on espn.com. Many of last years new recruits to the Big Sky Conference were rated as 40's.

Blake Davis, 6'5", 205 lb small forward also from (Saint Mary's High) Phoenix, AZ, has signed letter of intent to come to Weber State. Davis is rated as a 73 on espn.com. Davis plays on the same high school team as Fulton and maintains a 3.62 GPA.

Lindsey Hughey, 6'3", 194 lb shooting guard has signed letter of intent to come to Weber State. This season he will play his sophomore season for Seminol State College in Oklahoma. Last season as a 2nd team JUCO All-American he averaged 12.8 ppg, 51.3% from the field, & 40.7% from beyond the arc. He played his high school ball at South Grand Prairie in Grand Prairie, TX. At Grand Prairie, Lindsey was a McDonald All American nominee, District 6-5 MVP, 2005-2006 Offensive Player of the Year, first team All District.

Rahe is bringing in the talent, and Weber's future as well as UM's are looking brighter, The Weber/UM basketball rivalry just might start getting better.

If you moved from the WAC the one win that you would be guaranteed a win vs every year, would be Utah State, if that were to happen I would root for Montana every time, because like I mentioned before, I HATE THE AGGIES.

TY, WCF. BTW I agree Montana/Weber State is going to become an even bigger rivalry. Not only in basketball, but football too. As for basketball, I hope that rivalry takes another step this year in the BSC tourney, and be a great game. Which it can be, if and when the GRIZ shoot even decent against them. This time it will be the GRIZ turn to come out on top, I hope. :)
