What We Can Do As Griz Fans

The wheels aren't falling off, picking up the right players in the portal could mean a NC with hopefully the core of elite players returning. The future remains bright!
The wheels aren’t falling off. They were falling off on November 22nd and completely fell off on December 20th. The wheels have already fallen.

That was part of the problem but in my opinion leaving the Big 12 for the Big 10 is a bigger contributor. Another big contributor is Husker fans are largely boomers stuck in 1995-2001. Sounds kind of familiar actually to the issues in Missoula.
Tell us you've never stepped foot in Memorial Stadium or a Runza without telling us...

I have a kid in BIG athletics. Nebraska's fan base is absolutely not largely boomers stuck anywhere. They are as vibrant and rabid as any fan base in the nation.

Stick to complaining about the Griz using soul-lacking AI generated narratives. Yes it's obvious.

My opinion on Nebraska’s fan base is based largely off of people I know who played there during the Bo Pelini era. During that time the fan base kept telling the players they needed to get back to the standards of 1995-2001. Nebraska has gotten a lot worse since Pelini left. That is another bad firing in addition to Solich. I haven’t been in Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium in a long time. Most of the Nebraska fans I run into in Colorado, which there are quite a few, are boomers. Nebraska as a whole state doesn’t have very many young people outside of Lincoln and Omaha.

So - essentially you have no idea. Got it.

Post less.

Love it

I think NIL needs to inject itself into the business community in Missoula, especially those that benefit from football success and build a program with commitments and recognitions so Griz fans can see and reward them for their commitment (stay / shop / eat / drink / etc).

Lets say you can have 50 businesses that span the food and hospitality spectrum commit to $1000/year each - that's another $50,000 for NIL.

I think the NIL needs to add an easy to join, lower cost fan portal - maybe it's $50/mo or $250 per year or something. Let fans join and support at a level that's not QB club type numbers and then maybe provide a weekly player update/interview by way of video to share out as a way to say thanks for the commitment.

Let's say we can add 5000 fans at a $250/annual commitment to support the NIL program - that's $1,250,000.

Now we're cooking
I am not donating another penny until things change with the program itself.

It's time for new blood. I want to see a young coach from a successful lineage coming in and doing something with the program other than a coach who seems to be satisfied with the current "success" and maintaining the Status quo.

The NIL:

I agree that there is a lot that can be done with the NIL to make UM just that much more attractive. I don't care about the argument "well if they are just here for the money".

In real life, people are motivated by money and opportunity. Why do people go to Universities to begin with? Why do people take up specific trades. Why do people open businesses? They/we do that to make money. We dang sure don't do it out of the goodness of our hearts or to be academic idealists in the pursuit of knowledge.

Being a College athlete is no different. they go to learn a "skill" get a degree. They give up a certain amount of their lives to serve others, because it IS entertainment, and that is service of sorts. So, give them cars while they are there and write it off on taxes. Provide them with food and housing that is not the "Dorms". The dorms suck. They are making millions for the school, that should be reciprocated. Put money in the pockets, give them contracts for ads and such with local businesses. MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE TO COME TO UM.

The players don't have to be housed in condos or penthouses. They don't need to drive Ferraris, Lamborghinis, They don't need to make $100k a year. There should be incentives for them.

Look at how many of us enlisted in the military. Why did you do it? I don't see it as being any different than signing a letter to play football for a college.

It's a contract, and you expect to get certain things from it. I joined because there were no real job opportunities for an 18 year old in Montana that paid what the military did. I got the GI bill. I got a home loan. I got housing, food, a paycheck and learned a profession that has advanced me my entire life. In return I "traded" eight years of my life to an institution/organization.

Provide these people with an income, perks, and benefits commensurate to their contribution to the team, with a minimum just like the NFL, military, or work world.

Coaching:

There are young hungry, and very talented coaches out there who would love an opportunity to coach at UM, or any of the elite FCS schools as a way to build their resume. Good for them. Anyone satisfied with being where they are at a young age in life isn't there to succeed, they are there for a paycheck. Older people "coaches" who are there for years without a high level of success, need to go because they are just there for a paycheck. I'm not saying that's Hauck, but it's time for him to shitcan the friends and family and start bringing in there talent that lifts the program to a perennial #1/#2 and a trip top the Semi's and NC every year. The coaches are out there.

Denny Washington didn't become a billionaire industrialist because he was brilliant. Denny became a billionaire because he knew talent, and he brought in the people who were hungry for success and wanted to build a powerful global corporation.

THAT is not a bad thing. Coaching is a job like every other job. Frankly, I wouldn't want a coach who was satisfied with the status quo. I want a coach who lives, eats, and breathes Montana football. I want a coach who wants to win, get conference championships and national championships, then continue their professional career and move up. Why is that any different than anyone in the work world? Because it's UM football? No. Give me the coach from D2 who has won 3 national Championships. Find a way to pay him based on team performance. You beat the cats, the program staff get bonuses commensurate with their positions on the team. The lowest gets a $25K bonus, the coach gets a $100k bonus. Make the playoffs? More bonuses. Win in the playoffs? More bonuses. Win the NC? Automatic $250K bonus. Get them, sponsorships, marketing contracts, cars, housing, make it so attractive and lucrative, based on performance that they can't say no.

Facilities-wise, provide a dedicated strength and training facility specifically for football. They deserve it. That is the cash cow of the University. Let the rest of the sports share the current facility. If they start making millions for the University, then build a S&C center specifically for them. I want to see elite level strength and conditioning coaches, dieticians and an academic tutoring network put in place.

I know this will be argued, but it's football that brings money into the school and community, not volleyball, soccer, golf, track, or basketball. When was the last time 27K fans showed up for ANY of those sports? When was the last time the Adams Center was sold out and filled to capacity for a basketball game?

I don't care about Title IX. Other schools get around it and if UM wants to be competitive, NOT just going to the playoffs every year and getting bounced in the second round or semi-finals, this needs to happen.

There's a lot I want to see done with this program. IF that was to happen, and Missoula stepped up, along with MORE businesses, offering REAL benefits, I would be more than happy to start donating again.

I work hard for my money, and I am not going to throw it away on staying with the status quo. When I invest it's to profit off of it, in one way or another. Either through personal satisfaction or financially. I have NEVER profited financially from UM, so it has been personal satisfaction, and that is gone for now. I hope it changes.

That's just my opinion. and my two cents on it from where I sit.

Instead of donating money, could you donate expertise, experience, and mentorship to athletes or students? Instead of donating to the program, maybe something like that would bring a better return on your investment (not financial, obviously).
