what to do with Graves ?

It sounded to me since last spring that Graves wanted to play QB so that’s what the staff allowed him to do. If he wanted to play other positions I’m sure they would have allowed him to compete there.

That’s kinda of my point - just like 7th grade at St.Aloysius when Head Coach Sister Maryelephant played little Johnny Stockton at qb, rb, wr, ss k and punter simultaneously, because like choate she didn’t have a choice. Dude just own it you don’t have a bsc quality qb other then TA.

Riddle me this what did TA have like 21-22 tds last year, how do you plan to replicate or produce that many scores with him playing mostly LB? Your new non-running Qb? Gimmick football isn’t sustainable at this level. TA will have less of a hand in the offense because conference teams will know how to game for him unlike last year. I’m a big fan of TA, in my opinion he should be playing full time on offense at running back and wildcat, hybrid receiver on every offensive down it would force opposing teams to account for him constantly which might help develop your new qb. Choate is wasting him at LB. yeah well, it’s just like my opinion man.

I personally love him at LB and I know he loves playing there. But we’d be really dumb to not give TA the rock on offense too. He’s just too dangerous not to.

And I’ve just never been one to write off a redshirt freshman after 2 starts. So it’d be stupid of me to assume he has no chance to be a quality starter at this level right now. It’d be equally dumb to put him on a pedestal because he’s huge with a rocket arm. Takes way more than that as we all know. Always just surprised at how quick people love to dismiss young players like there is no possible way they will grow and improve.

I’m not meaning to belittle your young qb. I watched the TT game and I believe at least twice he could not pickup a yard on third down keepers. He may have a great arm but he can’t run and that’s what they still have him trying to do he is going to get blitzed constantly. My point is Troy should play every down at every skill position on offense and make defenses constantly account for him. That would take a lot of pressure of CB and maybe give him confidence to develop a rhythm in running the offense. Other then this sister maryelephant coaching gem “Ok we need to pick up a 1st down here so Casey you are out this play, Troy is taking the snap and running, but be ready to pass on our next play unless Troy has a long run.” That will still work at St. Al’s jr. high, but you are wasting Troy at LB you don’t need him there, you already have a solid defense. You need 21 td’s from him to be successful again this year. As a griz fan I hope they do bury him at LB, he killed us on offense the last two brawls. As a fan of the game I only watch cats games to see him play offense because he scored 21 tds last year by not playing LB., good luck with that in conference. You won last year because he played qb. LBs do not affect a game like a qb or rb. No doubt it’s a good problem to have a guy that is so good you don’t really now how to maximize his skills. Most guys who have played both ways lately have been skill guys DB’s and Wr. LB too much contact to then play rb. Choate is going to get him hurt and then what the hell are you going to do. Just my opinion man..

Uh... TA probably wouldn't have picked up those first downs either, going against that monster defense! To your point, no way in hell Choate is going to risk getting TA hurt (more than he has to) by running him up the gut in a game we don't need to win. As for TA being our star skill position player, not doubt he's a phenom. Unfortunately for the teams we're going to play, we have other really talented skill position players with Ifanse, Jonsen, Jones, Kassis, Steele, etc. This really is a case of trying to figure out how to get the ball in the hands of all these stud players.

Did you even watch any of the game and see what this offense did to a damn good SEMO defense?

My previous post was a tongue-n-cheek reference to this. Everyone keeps posting about what they should do with Graves, but so many don't have a clue what Graves would like to do...he wants to play QB, he was willing to play some RB because they asked him. How is that for dick wad 2K?

But box, they are so much smarter than the coaches and Graves.

He’s playing on many of the specials & is a QB, at least for now. Who knows what will transpire but I’d have some faith in what the staff feels is best. As long as one of his uncles isn’t posting crap on facebook or he hasn’t taken down Griz references from his social media accounts, I’d say all is good. Crazy thing here as well, they’re getting some good performances from other players in other positions. He may not be needed elsewhere as of now.

My fear is that they will waste a talent. Graves is a very versatile player who will not develop much at all sitting at a third string QB. Coming from a class B high school, he is going to need some coaching at qb position. They just don't have much of that at that level. From my limited experience watching Griz practices, 3rd string QB's don't get any reps. He doesn't seem like the kind of player who is going to be satisfied doing nothing. From his interviews etc. he seems to be all about the team, but I'm sure he won't want to sit for too many years. He did get some great blocks on punt return last week.

To paraphrase something I heard from someone who knows what they're talking about, Graves went from a class B high school system to the Griz. Like going from driving a Chevy to flying a fighter jet. Lots to adjust and learn about. I believe the coaching staff really likes him as an athlete and a leader, I think he'll have his time and I'm not just yet writing him off to fight for QB next year against Humphrey or to vye to be a 2 year starter after that.

Meh...your other effort was way better! This was too logical to be dickwadish!

Seriously though, it's a valid point, but sometimes what a player wants and what's best for the team don't always coincide. Chances are though, from what I'm seeing, hearing, and reading, if Graves wants to see the field much as a Griz, he may have to do it at a different position. He's a great athlete, but is he talented enough to be the starting quarterback for the Griz? That I just don't know.

I don't disagree with any of this other than SEMO being damn good on defense. The cats looked good on Saturday, unfortunately. But SEMO is not a damn good team on defense. They have a great player and a couple other decent players, but they give up plenty of points the past year+

Bobby Hauck tells players which positions they will be playing, or not playing, not the other way around. It's a dictatorship, not a democracy.

This is true. There are other potential multi-position guys who don’t get to give other positions a try - it’s just not an option unless staff requests it. Kinda rigid it seems to me. I’d like to know who all is capable of what, just in case. But then, I am Not the coach. Hell,I didn’t even play the game.

Griz!

God I really hope not. Last thing we should ever do is emulate the fellas down at state Ag.

Totally. Why the hell would you want your best players to have the ball in their hands?! It’s ridiculous!
Guess I don’t get the joke as TA and GG are not in the same situ, at all. One is where he wants to be (and is not needed elsewhere); the other is the complete opposite (and should sue for ruining his pro chances).
But I do love how College of Bozeman fans think their offense is so unique and awesome, like it’s a choice not to have a real QB.
Today’s paper said 5 players have thrown passes in 2 games, and they’re proud of that. Choach, with The Plan in place, is an expert at controlling the narrative. He was quoted as saying, “Most people just line up with one guy behind center and roll.”

Well I don't know who is "proud" of anything, but I certainly don't have a problem with the offense thinking outside of the box to get the ball in our best players hands.

Troy is starting linebacker. Right where he wants to be. On top of that he'll get to carry the ball sometimes. If you don't think he's having a blast you don't know Troy.

I think we have a real qb, albeit a young one. We start a redshirt freshman who's started exactly two games. Obviously the experts here think we should just toss him in there and throw the ball 50 times. But we're a running team first anyway. Bauman doesn't have to do too much too early on this team which is nice in my opinion. And to take the load off even more we have the ability to let the best athlete on our team run the ball too.

Listen, I get it. We're the first team to ever start a redshirt freshman. I understand that he sucks and there is no way he'll ever improve. Last year we started a linebacker at qb. It was a joke. And it's stupider that this year we moved that linebacker to linebacker. He's clearly a qb playing linebacker. There is no chance that Choate and his staff have any clue what they are doing. They should ALL be sued! But I'm not sure why as a Griz fan you don't just love this? I mean it's the hated Cats doing all of this really stupid stuff with really bad players. You should be jumping for joy at this stupid plan of MSU. This has to be the best thing to happen to the Griz in years right? I mean there is no way we'd ever win games playing this stupid. We CERTAINLY could never beat the Griz playing this way! If I were you I'd simply sit back and enjoy the ride!

I thought the Cats looked like the better team this past weekend from start to finish despite the half-time score. It wasn’t super close in my opinion. What I don’t know is, is how good SEMO actually is. It is not unusual for a team to have a good ranking early on in the season to do nothing but drop precipitously off the top 25 list never to be heard from again. SEMO was not impressive at all. Question is, is that because they suck or because the Cats are good. Time will tell.

Probably a little of both as is always the case this early on. The games will be played and things will shake themselves out.

Yes, absolutely. I was thinking the same thing about the first two opponents the griz played. Do they suck really bad or are the griz really good? griz probably won't know how well they're going to stack up in the Big Sky until the UCD game. For the Cats, we'll see how things shake out but currently things are looking pretty damn good. Talk about a schedule that sets up perfectly if we're going to make a run at the Big Sky Title and playoff run. Cats don't play the two top teams Weber and EWU. Play UCD away, but they may not be as good as advertised? Play UM at home, and it's looking like NAU and Sac might be better than advertised and we play them both at home. If Choate doesn't get it done with this set up, Bobcat fans might have a melt down.

You got a cute little team over there who will probably give some BSC teams fits this year, and that’s something to be proud of. But they will get “#neveragained” once they go up against another true running team from a true running conf, or when they need to pass. I think the only way a BSC team has a chance at the title these days is with a good QB and thru the air. The history is clear there. So you guys are really just treading water, and have been for 4 years.
And I’m serious about TA getting screwed. Not actually the legal part but I would be super pissed if I was his relative (and all recruits should take note: Choach only looks out for his own best interests, not the player’s). Had he been developed properly at LB since the get-go, he probably would have had some scout’s eyes watching for him in the TT game, and maybe he did. But, he kind of looked lost in that game, certainly not a draft prospect, and now he’s already a JR with less time to get his tape out there, and more of these goofy carries that can only hurt his draft status (if he doesn’t get injured) but what the hell do I know

I know TA is talented and a winner, and played a huge role for the Cats last year, but I wouldn't trade JLM, Olson, Sneed or Akem for him. TA has 6 tackles this year. 102 rushing last game. That was better than zero the prior game. He leads the nation in completion percentage. 100%, but only 7 yards.
