I think the non-enthusiasm is more complex than getting students to simply "stand."
First off, the school needs to start scheduling better opponents. The last three or four games that I remember in which most of the student section was crazy were all during the 2005-06 season... Cat-Griz, the Stanford contest, Eastern Washington when Stuckey was on fire and the NAU game two years ago when there was actually something to lose. I think the Oral Roberts Bracketbusters game might have been in that category too. This past season, there wasn't a single game to get overly excited about as the MSU game fell during winter break as did the Boise State contest. I don't think too many fans are going to get overly excited about playing Northern Colorado.
Secondly, the team needs to be good. The 05-06 team was fun to watch. This past year they were not.
Third, there needs to be more involvement from the kids who live off campus. I would venture to guess that the majority of the kids who turn up at a Thursday night basketball game are kids that live on campus and really don't have anything better to do than walk 3 minutes across campus to watch the game. I think that "nothing better to do" attitude leads to less enthusiasm than you would see at a football game.
Fourth, being in the basketball arena kind of caters to kids being far less obnoxious than they would be at a football game. You are a lot more recognizable to security so those mean chants and drunken behavior are going to be snuffed out a lot quicker. And let's face it, drunks tend to be a bit more obnoxious and enthusiastic than sober kids.
Fifth, the student section feeds off the rest of the crowd, which is evident at the football games. When the students are running their mouths but the entire rest of the arena (the whole 4,000 that may have decided to show up) is pretty chill, those kids are probably going to quit down pretty quickly. When the rest of the arena is going crazy, the students tend to as well.
I think it's great that Swilly and AtHome are trying to get more excitement drilled into the basketball atmosphere but at the same time, with the existing problems that I just presented, I really don't see a problem with students just coming and having a good time and viewing the basketball game as a form of entertainment that is more intriguing than a CSI re-run. Maybe the marketing department can nickname one of the student sections (the boys basketball team does have two) "The Zoo" and strictly set it aside for the kids who want to stand, wear their Griz t-shirts and be rowdy and loud. Maybe the rest of the students will eventually feed off of that and eventually want to join in the ruckus.
