what should a coach emphasize?

Rial Cummings made a good argument for struggling coaches in his column today, referring to Joe Cravens.

I agree with him that academic success and civic involvement are only celebrated on winning teams, as if it were icing on a cake. But if you don't win, it really doesn't matter in terms of your job safety.

What do y'all think of this standard?

Jerome Souers once said that Montana recruits young men with character first, then we teach them how to play football.

I'd guess that translates to basketball as well. We have some pretty damn fine men and women on their teams and, when they do stumble, we pick them up.

So buy character first, support the little buggers when they stumble and BTW they might even get excited about the books!

And when you have run out of things to say, tell them winning is very nice.

I'd rather they keep up the tradition of recruting top-notch PEOPLE to put on UM's various uniforms rather than rely on wins as the only measure of the coaching staff. The more Vince Huntsbergers and DD's they recruit the happier I am. Wins will come with people like that on all the teams. Like that NCAA public service announcement says, ...there are X-number of NCAA athletes and almost all of them will go on to something in life OTHER than sports.
