What position will Selvig play for the Griz

The recruiting services have Selvig listed every where from a 2 guard, to a center. What possition do you think he will play for the Griz. how much of an impact will he have next year.

It is my hope he redshirts next year, gets to know the new strength coach very well, and is physically ready for D1 balling. I see him as a small forward, possibly even 2 guard. I think he needs to be where he can exploit his range on offense. I suspect he is going to be a matchup nightmare for the opposition. He will take bigger guys off the dribble and just shoot over the smaller ones. :twocents:

Nice answer Proud....I agree that he should redshirt next year. They seem to have pretty good depth already. barring injuries he shouldnt have to play. When he does play it is going to be nightmare for opposing teams. Everyone 1-5 on the court can shoot well. I would put Andrew's reange out of 15 feet, but jordan, and selvig can shoot the three, and so can the rest of the team. WHen you have two guys who are 6-8+ that can shoot, its going to be tough to guard them. Griz bball is going to be exciting the next few years. Maybe next year we can set some attendance records, and move up that average attendance a few hundred people.

Next year - I understand he will be a senior in high school and will contribute only to the Glendive team.

Mslacat playing tricks? if so, he got me. I still say redshirt 1st year of college.

From my point of view:
Selvig will play for Glendive This Year : 2006-2007
Selvig will play for Griz Next Year : 2007-2008

Now how do you redshirt the #118th player in the country when you are a Big Sky team! Yea he could use some more size and strength, but he is the most highly ranked player signed by a Big Sky in the last 20 years or more. If ever there was a player primed to come in and be the front runner for freshman of the year, next year (again 2007-2008) it is Selvig. With Mayes and Dlouhy graduating how can you keep him off the court?

To the topic of this thread Selvig college position, While he played every position on the court this summer I think he may play a little at the guard or center in a pinch, but he will most likely play both forward positions. He is a very good post defender, but on offence he is more suited to playing a little further out on the court. I think Jordan Hasquet type of player could be a perfect running mate at the forward position with Selvig. Basically having two forwards who can shoot the three, post up play defense, but could compliment each others strengths. The Griz would not have a designated small forward or big forward, just forwards. As a matter of fact on offence Selvig could play the 3 on offence and on defense the 4. Just my thought.

Current tense or future tense?

It is so fun to tease you.

By the way, I loved your 'Stone Face' thread. I am still waiting for you to explain yourself and your magical mind-reading skills. :loser:

Mslacat- What about your big 2007 recruit at MSU as Freshman of the year? Why was he not in the top 150? Is it because he committed early and did not go to tourneys in Vegas and such?
Just curious. I have seen them both play and I think the next 4 or 5 years are going to be exciting Griz - Cats games. I only wish Derek would have talked Bobby into being a Griz.

Just happy Montana Kids are CHOOSING to stay home and play for Montana Schools.

Shortly after, Howard committed to MSU he stopped going to the tourneys. His AAU Seattle Rotary team went to the Nevada Tourney with out Howard. For the sake of arguement (or lack there of ) I did not want to bring Howard into this thread. Howard, though, has been told he will not be redshirted next year and the Cat coaches are expecting him to contribute right away. On a national level I think all of the experts from the scout.com, rivals.com etc. have Selvig rated higher than Howard.

Mslacat,

I can agree on Selvig playing as a true freshman if he gets to where he needs to be physically. As for position, I think we agree on that. It should be fun to watch Selvig and Howard.

He's got like 15 months to gain some weight and strength. I don't know what kind of strength coach Glendive has. Tinkle might want to recommend a workout plan.

I don't think the Selvigs will have any problem with figuring out a workout plan. Doug was a pretty wirey guy though. His kid might not have the genes to put on a lot of weight. I don't know his mom or what kind of build she has.

If Selvig can be as much, or close to as much of an impact on the league and his team as Stuckey was for EWU, all I can say is Wow, and look out for the Griz.
Anyone think impact comparisons will be able to be made...will Selvig be that good? Too soon to tell, obviously, for sure. But opionions?

I seem to recall Anita being able to clear some rebounding space. That is as far as I am going on that!

Yeah, Pops was one of the best two guards in Montana history. Check the stats, he was versatile, could shoot from Deeeep, wily on D, rebound and his teams won because he would step up in crunch time.
His #1 priority, which he took pride in, was hookin' up Derick Pope. Doug and Pope hooked up on many alley oops and seemed like great teamates. Doug would rather make great passes than score and his teams were great winners.

Now his son, from Glendive which used to be a hotbead of hoops in the 70's and 80's, has grown up shooting deep jumpers and runnin' the floor just like dad.

Throw in Marc Glass and that was a squad.

This signing is a great day for the Griz.

Whoa pardner!!
Stuckey was/is a freak of nature! No one knew he was going to be this good, good but not 24 points a game as a freshman! I do not think there has ever been a freshman who has had the impact, scoring as Stucky!

Another thing to remember, Stucky and Selvig are diametrically opposed type players. Aside from the 6-10 vs. 6-3 Stucky is a shoot first player who will rack up mega points real quick. Selvig is a pass first player, he looks to get the entire team involved in the offence. Selvig is also a pretty darn good defensive player. Selvig may only have, 10 points in a game but it will be the other areas that he will kill you, assists, defense, ball handling, blocks ect. Selvig will not be a Stocky mega scorer (at least not initially)

How does anyone really know what Selvig is going to do. He isn't even out of high school yet, no one knows how he will develop physically. why don't we at least let the poor kid graduate

Tall and thin, like Doug.

Simply asking a question, mcat. My opinion is, like yours, that it will be a while before we see a frosh like Stucky. However, "diametrically opposed" players can have equal impact, it just might not be doing the same thing.
