What kind of team are we?

Let me see if I'm following

So Montana has 2 bad seasons in the last quarter century for obvious reasons and the program will never regain its dominance because of Mike Tyson and TigerWoods?...

Don't forget Miami and USC. I am sure we can blame them too.

All of the above. 8-)

Of that I'm not so sure...we're a lot like Tiger. He was invincible for about 10-12 years, and people were in awe of him on the golf course. Teams were in awe of the Griz on the football field, especially in Wa/Griz. That's definitely not the case any more (with Tiger OR the Griz), and I'm not sure it's something you can easily recapture.

Interesting analogy w/Tiger and I see your point.

However, Tiger doesn’t have the ability to get a younger version of him back out there. He is battling time more than anything. The Griz have the ability to recruit, and contrary to some of the naysayers on this board, UM is still a destination spot. We have the broadest fans base for the FCS level and one of the only recruiting weakness we have (facilities) is on the mend. Great things are ahead.

I hear you. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut, mystique is more than just the name of your favorite stripper....just like Tiger we HAD it, we LOST it, and it isn't so easily gained back. The mere THOUGHT of coming into Wa/Griz and having to play the Griz used to make players piss themselves...week in and week out, you could watch teams get rattled, self-destruct, etc., under the awesome power of Wa/Griz and the 26,000 screaming fans.

Now? The MSU f***[*] BOBCATS haven't lost here in two straight trips. EWU and CCU made us look pedestrian last year, and that was a 10-3 season! NAU embarrassed us in 2012, a season in which we were just 3-3 at home. We are just 7-5 against EWU in the last 12 years, 7-5 against MSU the last 12 years and 0-2 against NAU in the last 2 and 5 of those 7 combined losses were in Wa/Griz--that NEVER happened from '86-'11. Teams that we used to handle with ease (Cal Poly, EWU, NAU, MSU) now routinely give us fits and beat us. This hasn't been a 2-year decline...this started about 2002-2003 and has just been exacerbated by the coaching upheaval we experienced in 2011-2012.

COULD we get it back? Possibly....but I have a distinct feeling it'll be like the "glory days" from high school we all fondly look back upon....I just don't think we'll ever be able to recapture the magic of that unbelievable run from '95-'09 we all we able to be a part of. No dominant team--not Nebraska, not University of Miami, not USC, not anybody--has been able to truly recapture their glory days after they lost them. Alabama might be the latest example to add to that group...

I know I am wasting my breath here, but what the hell.......

1. You say that the Griz are 7-5 against MSU in the last 12 years. I love how people on this board randomly break out whatever timeline fits their argument. I could counter by saying the Griz are 6-2 versus MSU in the last 8 years. Those two cat wins came in 2010/2012, and I think we all know the story those years. In reality, the only team in the BSC that has caught/surpassed the Griz is EWU.

2. This whole issue of other team being afraid or in awe of the Griz during a certain time is a fallacy. It sounds good for message board fodder, but it doesn’t translate to what actually happens on the field. Sorry, it just doesn’t.

3. The programs you mention, I.e. USC, Miami completely contradict you own argument. Those programs have all sustained long periods of excellence; periods where they were down, and then back up again. USC is a perfect example. Basically you are saying that once a program is down, it is down for good. That is just factually incorrect. Sorry man, but that was a bad example.

4. You say this “decline” started in 2002-2003 and in the very next paragraph you talk about the “magical” run from 1995-2009. You do realize that those timelines overlap right? So, which is it? The reality is that the Griz have had two rough years: 2010, in the transition from Bobby to Robin, and 2012 for very obvious reasons.

Have the Griz taken a step back in “dominance”? Sure they have. All strong programs do at some point. That is all I am saying. You guys are exaggerating how dominant the Griz where at one point, and in turn are exaggerating how much they have declined.

No offense here, but most of you guys spend way, way too much time on e-griz and really don’t understand the reality of what is going on. As a result, most of you just pile on with the common opinion of e-griz at the time. Sorry, but that is a fact.

You seem like a good dude, and I am not trying to be a dick.

Very good and accurate post. You're nailing it, Raider.
