What is the future looking like for Will Cherry?

Cherry had his first summer league game for the New Orleans Pelicans. Looks like he only got about 3 minutes so far with no stats. I'm thinking he is going to have a tough time making a team. Wish him the best though.

"The Pelicans starters for Friday’s game were Darius Miller at small forward, Josh Owens at power forward, Jon Brockman at center, Austin Rivers at shooting guard and Brian Roberts at point guard."

Brian Roberts played in 78 games, started 5, averaged 17 minutes, and averaged 7.1, for NO last season. Played in Germany for 3 years before that.

This is a very short league, I believe. Great opportunity for Will. Maybe Cherry will have to earn his playing time--as it should be.

one point. new orleans does not own the rights to cherry, so no real incentive to give him minutes over thier own guys. possibly even some incentive to hide him if he's good. i think this is a no-win for will. his best shot was to get drafted, but the broken leg and the two lousy ncaa appearances nixed that. looks like the international route for him, where tinks and other ex-griz should be of great help. there's still money to be made there. and remember, the international route saved micheal ray's life.

I agree that was the nail in the NBA coffin for Cherry. Leading up to the 1st round game versus Syracuse, all Jamar and Cherry talked about was how good they were...and then they got totally dominated. You can't be a player from the little BSC and look that poor and expect to be drafted. Not gonna happen.

GOOD LUCK to him in some other professional league however...a great sure-fire talent, just not NBA talent in my uneducated opinion.

GO GRIZ

My view of Cherry is different. I never thought he was a sure-fire NBA player. I loved how he played, and saw alot of talent and potential, but was never sure of what his ultimate talent potential would be. When some on the board, and some coaches, said he had good or possible NBA potentiall, I took notice.

I don't think the big ncaa losses had much to do with where he is now. It was his foot injury early in the season, and later foot injury, that kept him from shining and getting back to full speed and potential. His later offcourt incident probably didn't help him, as he was probably on the bubble.

As for the ncaa losses, I was actually fine with how he played in those games. He tried to carry the team on his back, despite the team being totally outmatched in both games. He couldn't do it alone. He knew no one else could do it, other than perhaps Kareem last year. I was at both games, and close to the court. The big Wisc white guy center had an unbelievable defensive game, especially against Will, and the whole Syracuse team had a great defensive game.

Does anyone think they were not keying on Cherry, and not on Cherry and Kareem this year? The opposition knew to key on Will and Kareem. This year in particular, UM had zero inside game at the ncaa tourney, and zero strength. Syracuse didn't respect UM's inside game at all--not at all. They guarded Cherry and Kareem. Essentially 3 guys on them at all times when they had the ball. 2 guards bracketing, and a post between them in the paint. Will and Kareem had no where to go. No where.

Cherry is the quickest, fastest and most athletic person I have ever been close to, in any sport. (I don't attend many professional games.) He's a bit small. He is slim, but he put on good muscle last year, perhaps when he couldn't play last fall after his foot injury.

I know Will a bit. Didn't spend much time around him this past year, but enough in prior years to know that he is focused and tenacious. No one will try harder.

I think he has good potential to go somewhere, make some noise, and get to the NBA. I like Will, both as a player and person. Hopefully, he'll get some chances in the very short league. He can play, or learn to play.

Will has NBA quickness, no question. It's just that ugly shot that he has to overcome. Oh well, that ugly shot is the reason he played for Montana and not a "big-time basketball program."

Mario Dunn, on the other hand, does not have an ugly shot.

:thumb: As for Cherry, I think PR is pretty accurate on his analysis. Cherry does have NBA potential, but needs a few things to go his way. (1) Improved offensive consistency, especially on the perimeter. (2) Get his shot on a NBA team that has plenty of scoring, needs toughness, and a true defensive stopper at PG.

Another thing being overlooked in his game, he contributes on the boards well for a PG. Sorry, I just cannot write this kid off. I love his toughness, and attitude. How far that will take him? Only time will tell, but I know he will bust his ass to get his shot. There is no giving up in him. :thumb:

I have a feeling he would best served to catch on in tough Euro league, or NBA Development league. I will always pull for Will Cherry. Literally, "If there is a Will, there is away."

That "ugly shot" still burned us in the Big Sky Championship game at the last minute. Well, that and missed free throws. Ugh! :|
