What is team camp?

Keron DeSheilds apparently was here for "team camp." I assume high school recruits don't have the funds to cross the country for a few scrimmages. Thus my assumption is that the NCAA permits schools to provide this "acclimation" opportunity for recruits. I also assume that this comes out of Tinkle's hoop club budget or from high school summer camp money.

If my assumptions are correct, does anyone know:
Is this for returning players as well as new recruits?
Does it apply to JUCO recruits also?
Do other sports (such as football or women's hoops ) have similar provisions in the NCAA rules?

Given that is is down time for college hoops, I thought it would be interesting to learn a bit more about the rules. I assume MslaCat is shaking his head that we all don't know this.

Mid June through mid July are when the Men and Lady GRIZ conduct their annual team and cage/instructional camps.

Team camps are when HS teams from the region and compete in full court games for 2 days. Their HS coaches coach their own players. It is great exposure for players and programs. In my opinion a better recruiting tool to gauge skill levels of players. It also is great to get to know HS coaches and build pipelines.

Cage camps are instructional with drills, various leagues, 1 on 1and the best way to get kids and parents interested in your program. Tinkle and his staff do a very good job of selling the GRIZ and teaching kids basketball.

As for how these camps impact GRIZ players? The players that choose to be in Missoula during this time coach at the instructional camps, and help out with team camps. It exposes the players to the community, and it's great for kids to get know the players. For the fans of the GRIZ, it is a great time to meet the staff. They are quite cordial, friendly, and outgoing during this time. They will answer some questions regarding the team, returning players, schedule, etc, but cannot say much or anything about current/potential recruits.

These camps have a few of people of know at them, as for coaches/parents knowing what schools kids are considering. It takes attending a few camps to learn who the coaches are from the region, and getting to know them.

This time of the year is the best time of year to watch GRIZ players at evening open gyms, usually after 7PM. GRIZ, with other local college players, or former college players of about 12 to 20 play for a few hours. I love the open gyms, the games get pretty intense. As for Deshields, no he was not at the team camp. The comments of on him came from several coaches and/or players that seen him compete in his visit, and they all absolutely love what this kid brings to the table. The most common thing said about him, is his leadership and intensity he brings. He believes he belongs, and is not afraid of anyone on the court. He brings a taste of inner city basketball attitude to the GRIZ, has a great attitude, good grades, and great kid.

Team camps are awesome, but in this economy, many programs are pricing themselves out of the market. The GRIZ camp is affordable in comparison, and growing in attendance/recognition. I urge anyone with some time, to attend the camps, in particular watch the open gyms.

My mistake. I assumed that this was an acclimation period for new recruits so they could work with the returning players and have a positive relationship formed with the high school/grade school kids.

I know that "team camp" is for grade school and high school kids. I am a bit uncertain about how college players get compensated for participating. I guess that recruits can't be a part of that.

All I know is that I wish I was in Missoula this summer to watch the new recruits go at it against the returnees. Apparently, Deshields elevates the intensity every minute he is on the court. Cherry is intense as well. I hope that intensity transfers to a few of our bigs.

Hey grm rats, which of the new recruits are on campus?? I would have thought that they couldn't afford that expense.

Usually most the players are on campus between end of June and end of July. The open gyms are most every night around 7PM in the Aux Gyms, sometimes on the main floor.

JPJ3...........what can we expect from Henderson? He looks like a strong player for his age.
