What defense will we run?

With a new D-coordinator, there could be some big changes on the defense we will be running this season. I have heard that we are even making some defensive changes from what we saw in the spring. Anyone else hear that? I know that our lack of experience at CB and LB have been a concern to the coaches. I would welcome any comments from individuals who might have some insight on whether we run a 4-3 base, a 3-4 base, or one of the more novel defenses to try to mask and coverage problems we may have.

It’s been beat to death in other threads but most likely there will be a 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 type D as the base. This defense is much better than people are going to be giving it credit for. We have some real skill at each position if we can put it together. Expect a much more consistent defense this eyear compared to the last few

Agreed. Will be interesting to see what they come up with. There are some good football minds working on the best D for the players we have on the roster.

In an article I read on GoGriz.com Baer mentions Simms and Tilleman at the defensive ends and Shaw anchoring the line. No mention of another tackle. I don't know what that implies but it seems to say we will be in a 3 down lineman scheme. He seems excited about the safeties and the fact that Buss could very well be available. Something tells me Miller is a very good football player...

I am not sure what the base defense will be. I do know, the defense has to be better than last season.

As for this past spring, Bobby gave us vanilla at scrimmages. We saw nothing on either side of the ball.

I know it has been beat to death before, but the point of my post was that I am hearing that there have been some changes in our defense following spring ball, not in what was "shown" during the spring, but in alignment/philosophy, and I want to hear if anyone else knows anything about this.

Based on your view of our weaknesses, perhaps a 9-1-1. Maybe 8-1-2. If Buss is available, a 7-2-2. And then hope that teams run against us all the time.

I will be satisfied to see a defense with continuity. See a defense that can defend week in and week out. Consistency would be a welcome change. I think to start, our Defense will be middle of the pack in the FCS then it will only improve to be one of the best.

Some need to read this. Coach sounds happy about what he has:

That is a terrific, positive and must-read article. I was impressed with what Baer said, and how he said it.

The 4-2-5 that has been discussed this summer makes a lot of sense and if Buss were healthy he would crush in the hybrid role.

Rocky Long utilizes a 3-3-5 so will be interesting to see what Bobby and staff go with.
