What an ugly picture

I was amazed to find a full bar at Providence Park yesterday. I guess that is the difference between a school operating a venue and a private enterprise. Imagine Wa-Griz with legal access to whiskey! UM is sitting on a cash cow with that one. Of course more drinking means more security, but that's the price you pay. Maybe if the stadium would serve booze and beer then the stands might not be as empty in the 3rd. Either that or everyone would be in the bathroom.

If you serve beer, you don't allow return to the stadium. So people don't leave at halftime. Tailgates before and after the game would be even better.

To be fair that looks to be the visitors side of PGE Park or Whatever it is now. Still pretty sad.

It's not fair. That's the home side of the field. It was so sparsely attended that I could find myself in the picture. ISU brought more people to the game and they travel like crap. There were less than 1000 attendees and that includes the cheer squad, dance team, and the high school half time show. The 50/50 rafle only payed out at $200 and I'm surprised it's that high.

To put it in perspective I could hear people 2 sections away debating if a pumpkin spice latte made you white.
Officially listed as 3193.

They already have plenty of security with no booze being sold. Pay for security out of beer sales and we would be the safest place on Earth.

I'm more concerned about Wa-Griz where people come and go like Griz football were an auto or home & garden show where folks wander in and out as they please. Considering that 60% of season tickets are purportedly held by people living out of the area would these same people continue coming to Missoula six times each fall without football :?: Seriously, Big Sky games appear to have become nothing more than a distraction for 12,000 plus members of Montana's social set.

The bloom is off the maroon and silver rose...nothing lasts forever.
just wait, it is getting more interesting in the no too far future.....when the Griz move up. Yeah, I don't like it either,, but, it's a coming....

UNC suffers from the same problem, only worse (I think). CSU is only 20 miles away, CU about 40 miles, Denver maybe 60 miles. Lot's of competition.

I live in Seattle and make it to most home games. By the time I purchase a flight, hotel and meals....it can be a spendy trip back home. The least the U could do is let me spend a few more dollars buying a beer or three inside WA-Griz!

Ya but they pack that place for soccer games...life in a Liberal state...packed for soccer...nobody cares about football....

They do care about football. They care about Oregon, Oregon State, and the Seahawks. They just don't care about Portland State. On game day, I-5 is jammed with Portlanders headed south to go to duck and beaver games. A 30 minute drive to Salem takes an hour! Getting to Corvallis (which is an hour drive on a weekday) takes 2 hours. Eugene is even worse! All from Portlanders going to games.

The soccer team is popular for the same reason the Blazers are popular, a pro team in town. It does appeal to the hipsters around here that liked soccer before it was cool, but it mostly has to do with something being local.

Not any more! Just a quick trip NORTH across the Columbia gets to legal weedville! While Eugene has a solid rep, so does Washington. Easier to go north, my friend.

Unless you're in a Power Five Conference, your football team is pretty much irrelevant these days. I can sit at home and watch college football from 5 p.m. Thursday night until after mid-night on Saturday. (Not to mention NFL games on Thursday nights now). I can watch my alma mater via the Big Ten Network, I can watch all the local Division I teams (Boise State, Utah, BYU, Utah State), and I can watch just about every top 25 team -- live or via my DVR. If I lived in the Portland area, why would I get out of my easy chair to fight traffic on a cold and rainy night in Portland to watch FCS football?

The Mountain West is not much better: here were the attendance figures for MWC games on Saturday: UNLV--13,419, Nevada -- 20,508, San Jose--17,887, Hawaii -- 24,761 and Fresno --32,164. Certainly better than attendance for most Big Sky games, but not great. Unless your team is highly successful, it's going to be tougher and tougher to draw fans to live football. Heck, even Power Five schools like Michigan and Michigan State are having a hard time filling their stadiums these days, and the NFL is trying to figure out how to not kill their golden goose as HDTV and high prices make attending games less and less attractive compared to staying home and watching on TV.

And as noted above, if you're in a major market like Portland, Sac State, UNC or Weber, you have a lot of other battles to fight for people's attention. The only thing keeping these programs alive is body bag games against FBS schools, and subsidies -- student fees and appropriated dollars from the state. That extends to most of the MWC schools as well, even though they get nice checks from television revenue. Most are still heavily subsidized.

Come on, PDX, you're denying Badlands his right-wing fantasy of the day!
