We're Gonna Miss Gubner Next Season

As this season has progressed, it has become more and more evident that the Griz defense starts with Gubbie. I focused on him quite a bit last evening, and Delaware doubled him on every play. Because he is doubled by virtually every team, it frees-up our great linebackers to make plays. Our defense starts with him, and it is amazing that he plays on so many snaps, and his high level of play never seems to diminish.

We will miss Gubner more than any other senior leaving, and I expect him to be attending some NFL training camp in 2024. How do we replace him?

I didn’t think we could replace Ford last year. We ended up with two first team all conference corners. Didn’t think we could replace our LB’s from last year. Ended up with a Buck Buchanan award finalist.

Yes, Gubner is the engine that drives this D. yes, guys like him don’t grow on trees.

But after this year, I have faith in Bradford to make the necessary adjustments and/or go get a guy or two that will fill that gigantic hole that Gubs is leaving…

Gubs is the Goat.

We're a board of folks who covet bridge abutments, who can run, and that there aren't fourteen on the roster causes a lot of hand-wringing. Next to QB, the most difficult position to find. Thankfully, Alex chose Montana and for that, we should all be eternally grateful. I know his teammates are. Gubs is so much more than the block-eater they predicate this defense on, which is why he is so valuable.

I think it will be more difficult to replace the three Missoula kids playing linebacker. Not impossible, but they've been all that and a bag of chips for a couple of years now.

I would argue that Riley Wilson, C. Rostad, Cory, Barnum, Tirrell, Genotone, et.al., will do just fine. Also expect a couple transfers in in that position as well…

Gubner is a beast. Getting a big interior DL is easy... Getting one that can play like him with the speed of a Linebacker and the hands of a Safety is insane.

I love that we are playing "next year" when we are having the best "this year" since 2011. Wilson is All-Big Sky but doesn't start. Genatone will start next year and somewhere between the greatly improved Ryan Tirrell and Walton/Wegener/Osteen we will find a stud.

Lee and Myer will slide in perfectly, my shopping list includes a 3rd safety like a Trajon Cotton who can run with the receivers down the field. Not sure I see that guy on the bench but I'm also a guy who thought home computers were a fad.
