Well that wasn't fun

Expected to lose, but a couple of things bugging me just a bit:
1) Curran had a couple of drops, although once the pass was low. The other though looked like a catchable ball, even if it was contested a bit, and it was for an important 3rd down conversion.
2) Was it just me, or were there a couple of plays where Phillips pulled the ball from Calhoun even though it looked like there were good lanes up the middle? Is this a determination that Phillips make in that split second? I know it looks different when you're down on the field...

I was hoping he had improved upon that from last season, he just drops so many important balls.

I know I've conveyed this general thought a few different ways, but I want to state it clearly:

The Griz did not play Texas Tech, Nevada, Fresno, Colorado, or Cal tonight. They played #7. I don't think enough people are appreciating the difference between #7 in the FBS and #40-60 in the FBS. #7 is much better at maximizing your mistakes and minimizing theirs. Sounds obvious; obviously isn't.

This times 1,000. I talked to a very famous former Griz coach earlier this week. He said playing THIS Washington team is absolutely no different than if the Griz were playing Bama, Clemson, Florida State or USC THIS SEASON. HIS EXACT WORDS. He said that's the level of talent Montana was going to play in Seattle. He didn't need to tell me that. I already knew how great the Huskies are. BUT, hearing him say it, put it in even more persepective as to what the Griz were up against. This game was so far removed from the time the Griz beat a horrible Oregon State team in 1994, it's laughable.

Does that make up for some of the miscues and mistakes Montana made tonight, or, their obvious flaws going forward? No. But this game was unchartered territory for ANY Griz team. No Montana team in the modern era of the FBS has ever played in a playup game like tonight's was.

Griz beat Oregon State in '96 not '94.

Couple of observations;
1. Coach Stitt's system is in no way "offensive genius" 130 odd yards is crap. You should never throw a pass behind the line of scrimmage against a team with superior speed. That is "A level " dunce stuff. He got hired on his ability to take what the d gives you, try that sometime. Doesn't even run his signature play with the Griz (jet sweep). In three years have not seen a single offensive adjustment against a quality team, figuring out Mississippi Valley State is like figuring out Jessica Simpson strategy for North Korea, doesn't count.

2. Having a bunch of converted TE's get fat doesn't make for a good offensive line. I'm glad they all have guts hanging over their pants, give me five mattresses and stand them up on end. I'd take 5 275 guys with a wee bit of fire, who got beaten by their Dad's and have issues.

3. I'd take Coach Delaney's old school Fullback lead and play-action system in a heart beat over the garbage that was meant to represent my alma mater today. What happened to 90 plays a game? I knew as soon as he started punting on 4th and short half way through his first season that he didn't believe his own press.

I don't think I was acting like a douche. I'm a U of M graduate and a guy who drives 620 miles one way to watch them play (which only means I feel invested in our team). Our O-line does have two players who were recruited as TE's and have put on 50/70 odd pounds to fill the gaps in the O-line. Do we have guys firing off the line and pancaking d-line men? I don't see it. Did you see the rushing stats today? We had more carries than yards, is that being too hard on the student/athletes? That's a fact. Did they dominate against non-scholarship Valparisso last week?

Do you want a medal for how far you drive? Or do you think you are big enough to push the pile against a very good Huskies team. Would be awesome if the team knew they just needed to have you on the team. I blame the loss on you.

There is no doubt that anyone who thought we wouldn't get beat and beat soundly was not being realistic but to get utterly destroyed has to be disappointing to both the fans and the players. Stitt has been saying they have worked on the mental side of the game. Hopefully they can get back home and regain some confidence going forward. Bottom line is we are 1-1 and that's where we should be. The difficult thing is to assess what kind of a team this is other than to say, at this point we are not a top 25 FCS team. 9 more to go to settle it....

Why play this level of team, just for the money? Hell we could make more than that if we sold beer inside WaGriz.

In a game like yesterday's, offensive performance isn't necessarily measured by points. I mean, would you REALLY have felt any better to day if it had been 63-14? The offense played well, limited the number of possessions for UW (or it WOULD have been 83-7 like someone posted last night), and did fairly well in designed run plays (which was negated by 33 yards lost in sacks). I was at the game....stayed SPECIFICALLY to see the offense score and was ecstatic when JLM made his move across the middle, only to have it called back by a bullshit "ineligible man downfield" call...I can tell you this: either the Husky fans around me were just being nice, or they really WERE impressed by our WR's (with one notable exception) AND our running game...because they were NOT happy with the Husky D--especially on 4ht down....lol

AZ-- that is surprising. If they were actually "impressed" and not just humoring you, I'll take your word on that. I was not at the game but watched with other fans here in Mtown that could not make it. I totally agree w the BS call bringing the JLM TD back. Everyone in the place did. But you just have to get on the board with your O. To be shut out like that is an indictment, IMO. This was a great team, but it wasn't the goddamn Seahawks. You needed to score at least one time **with your OFFENSE** to at least appear that you're a contender, in any conference. To not get on the board on offense was a disgrace.

Their 3rd string fresman running back had full ride offers to USC and Notre Dame and was running behind the second string o-line that still averages over 300#. If they couldn't score against our worn out ones and two's they better consider giving up the extra 20 scholarships and dropping down to FCS.

You must have forgotten about the 2005 ass kicking we received at Oregon. A game in which the opening g kickoff was returned for a TD by Freshman Jonathan Stewart against a special teams unit coached by your hero Bobby. That Duck team wasn't as good as the UW team the Griz played yesterday.
