Nope, no connection to Griz football, but we’re here keeping an eye out for splashdown of Orion, the Artemis-2 space capsule. Got too excited and just had to share hopes for a good outcome (it ain’t a walk in the park). And it calls up a fabulous memory, which even has a small sports sidebar.
I doubt that many on here remember “TelStar,” or even know what that was. FYI: TelStar 1 and 2 were the first two commercial telecommunications satellites … yes, the start of all our phone stuff, GPS, etc. … and a lot of space junk. I’m happy to say I was there to watch the first broadcast based on a TelStar signal (1962 or 1963). I distinctly recall seeing a view of reindeer riders live from Lapland. The sports connection was pretty funny. One of the networks sent a baseball game feed to Europe. I remember the announcer wondering how a French commentator was going to explain “double play” to an audience that knew zip about baseball.
