While it seems like common sense to recognize that losing your starting senior point guard, who has a great assist to turnover ratio, is going to hurt the team, I must admit, Grizbeer, that I "cheated" a bit on this one. My view was bolstered by information from the coaches and some of the players, including AJ.
Look at the quotes from AJ that appear in the paper from time to time. Earlier in the season, he said the team needed to step up and hit their free throws. While I don't give him all the credit for improved free-throw shooting, the percentage has increased significantly. After CET's first game back, and even tho CET didn't get in the game, AJ said it was a boost to have CET back and that he was providing good advice and support from the bench.
In today's paper, AJ has this quote:
"“It's chemistry,” Johnson said. “We talk about potential a lot of the time. That's been the knock on us, when is our potential going to be realized. I think we saw it today, what we can do when we're firing on all cylinders. The chemistry was at a high.”
Or Hasquet's:
"The Grizzlies' momentum-turning burst started with a drive and a short jumper by Hasquet. Hasquet scored the next bucket on a layup, then dished to McGillis for a 3-pointer on the next possession. Then it was Hasquet's turn for a trey.
“Me and Jack just kind of feed off of each other,” Hasquet said. “Maybe him seeing me get going got him going a little bit. I was able to get him a wide-open three in that series of plays and it all rubs off.”
This team, including both players and coaches, has very good talent. They've shown periods of excellent play, as well as disappointing inconsistency, but last night they were hitting on most (I wouldn't say all) cylinders for most of the game--and against a very good team. This team has very good depth, multiple weapons, and enough shooters so that it should be able to find enough hot shooters each game to get good point production. Now, the team has to find a way to play more consistenly at a high level, and minimize its lulls.
Two of the conference losses are on the road to the top 2 teams. The other loss, ISU, was unfortunate, but it's not like ISU isn't tough. Didn't conference leader WSU have to beat them in overtime, or double overtime, last night?
