Welcome Back CET

The Griz are clearly a better team with CET in the line up. He starts the offense lower and quicker. He can break the press by himself. He moves the ball around faster. He's a true point guard. He defends well. It will take some time for Johnson and others to adjust, but CET's return is a positive. Despite some rust today, CET played fairly well. In the long run, his absense may make the team stronger than it would have been otherwise, because more people can handle the ball now and run the offense if necessary.

Speaking of ballhandling, Tinkle made a good move early in the game. He took pressure off AJ in the press by using McGillis to break the press against UNC SF, instead of risking their PG picking our pockets. GREAT strategy Tinks. They did not press for long.

:? Really??? :?

:o Great! I am looking forward to Thursday. :o

 This must have been the plan all along.

That Greg O guy looks like a pretty smart basketball observer.

If PSU pressures the ball in the backcourt, like they did in Portland, I suspect we'll see CET off the bench fairly soon.

:? Great!! I am looking forward to Thursday. No problem here.

Definitely the difference last year vs PSU in Missoula??

Some people always look for the negative, except when looking at themselves. Must suck to go through life that way.

Tinks made a few very good moves, yet what he talked about to the media was the mistake he made late in the game when he put in some subs instead of letting his guys step on NC's necks. That shows growth. I recall him switching to zone in the first half, totally confusing NC. As a result the Griz expanded their lead. Another poster already commented on taking some of the ball handling pressure off AJ by using McGillis and Hasquet to break pressure.

PSU is clearly the best team right now, but any team can be beat. Who thought North carolina was vunerable, then all of a sudden they lose a few. What about Gonzaga losing 3 straight after rising to a top 5 ranking? Just a little food for thought.

That would be me who commented on taking ballhandling pressure off AJ. I hope our other players are ready for that against PSU, Dominguez drives me crazy. Another thing we did one time, that I love and hope to see again. We finally posted up a guard (AJ) on one of UNC's small guards. I am not sure if that was AJ just doing it, or if Tinkle called for it. Either way, I have been wanting to see that for a few years now. I hope we challenge Dominguez on a few post ups too. (Please Tinkle!).

Why do some young punks have to be such jerks? It really gets old.

Did not miss a game for 25 years. When staff told me they had considered someone to correct rumor on egriz I did not think the intent was a cheerleader for errors in discretion. I am looking forward to attending tonites game. It is Thursday and I have been looking forward to it.

Hey, where are all you naysayers, who doubted that the return of CET would help the team?
I was one of those who doubted that CET's return would help the team - not because I didn't think CET wasn't a better PG that AJ, but rather because my perception of the "team" was that there are a lot of players that would sit back and look to 1 player to carry the load, so adding a better player didn't necessarily make the team better, it just shifted the spotlight. My opinion is that is why the Griz lost some games they probably shouldn't have with CET in the lineup earlier in the season, and why when he was out AJ had to score 25+ for the Griz to win.

After last nights performance it looks like PlayerRep was right and I was wrong (thankfully) about the impact CET is making. If the guys can continue to play as a team, and everyone participate instead of looking to 1 guy to carry the load they can finish strong in league and live up to the potential and expectations we had before the season started.

Also have to give a lot of credit for this win to Tinkle and the seniors. It would have been easy for the Griz to lay down for this game, especially when they got down by 8 and things were going PSU's way. It looks like Tinkle has them believing in themselves. If they can keep that attitude and intensity going for the rest of the season a return to the NCAA tourney is out there for them. It will be tough no doubt, but they have showed they can do it for a game or 2, now they just need to do it consistently.

While it seems like common sense to recognize that losing your starting senior point guard, who has a great assist to turnover ratio, is going to hurt the team, I must admit, Grizbeer, that I "cheated" a bit on this one. My view was bolstered by information from the coaches and some of the players, including AJ.

Look at the quotes from AJ that appear in the paper from time to time. Earlier in the season, he said the team needed to step up and hit their free throws. While I don't give him all the credit for improved free-throw shooting, the percentage has increased significantly. After CET's first game back, and even tho CET didn't get in the game, AJ said it was a boost to have CET back and that he was providing good advice and support from the bench.

In today's paper, AJ has this quote:

"“It's chemistry,” Johnson said. “We talk about potential a lot of the time. That's been the knock on us, when is our potential going to be realized. I think we saw it today, what we can do when we're firing on all cylinders. The chemistry was at a high.”

Or Hasquet's:

"The Grizzlies' momentum-turning burst started with a drive and a short jumper by Hasquet. Hasquet scored the next bucket on a layup, then dished to McGillis for a 3-pointer on the next possession. Then it was Hasquet's turn for a trey.

“Me and Jack just kind of feed off of each other,” Hasquet said. “Maybe him seeing me get going got him going a little bit. I was able to get him a wide-open three in that series of plays and it all rubs off.”

This team, including both players and coaches, has very good talent. They've shown periods of excellent play, as well as disappointing inconsistency, but last night they were hitting on most (I wouldn't say all) cylinders for most of the game--and against a very good team. This team has very good depth, multiple weapons, and enough shooters so that it should be able to find enough hot shooters each game to get good point production. Now, the team has to find a way to play more consistenly at a high level, and minimize its lulls.

Two of the conference losses are on the road to the top 2 teams. The other loss, ISU, was unfortunate, but it's not like ISU isn't tough. Didn't conference leader WSU have to beat them in overtime, or double overtime, last night?

I think the strongest line-up is with both CET and AJ in the game at the same time. I think that was very evident last night. I agree with Player that it improves overall team speed, quickness and ball movement. It was nice to see CET knock down some big free throws.

I also think Selvig needs to be on the floor, maybe rotating with Staudacher and McGillis. However, they do it, they need to get him on the floor.

What was up with PSU leaving their player of the year on the bench?

I read the story in the Oregonian on the game and the coach of the PSU team said he had the player on the bench because he was having an off game and the other guards were playing better. The coach said his team played OK, but the Grizzlies just played better. (he cited the Grizzlies knocking down shots and home court advantage as 2 factors) We'll be fine, he told the paper. He didn't seem too upset by the loss.
