Weber wins first round CIT

Just so we don't forget, there WAS a BSC team playing tonight! I only caught the last two minutes. Seems like Weber was up by about 10 points or so throughout the second but almost coughed it up at the end. Still they came away with a 72-69 win over Utah Valley. Curiosity got the best of me because I know nothing of the Wolverines. They are an independent and apparently we played, and beat, them this year (I was actually surprised by that!) I couldn't remember them playing the Griz but it was likely because I was on the road during that game. Hope Weber plays a bit more inspired than that. Utah Valley wasn't that great a team. Perhaps they were just complacent towards the end. Can any of the Weber fans illuminate what went on in this game?

Also, as they are an independent, are they looking for a conference? No one willing to take them? You would think The Big Sky Home for the Directional Schools of the Poor Conference would be dying to pick them up . . .

Utah Valley is actually in the Great West conference (no auto bid league, North Dakota's league), and they had a pretty good year. They won 20 games, including 13 in a row, and won their conference. They have only been D1 for like 12 years or something. Weber played absolutely awful in the first half and had a hard time putting them away towards the end. But a win is a win and Weber stays perfect at home. The crowd wasn't very good due to spring break and not much time to advertise the game.

Old Dominion is in the CIT and won too. It would be interesting if down the road Blaine Taylor would coach against Weber again.

UVU actually has a pretty decent team, they are fast and they have some good shooters, it's no suprise that it took all the way to the last second to put the Great West champs down, but Weber needs to play better than what they did last night or they wont make it out of round 2. Most likely gonna find out who we play tonight or have a pretty good idea, they say that the CIT format is based on regionality and there are 3 "western" games today:

CSU Bakersfield (16-14) @ Utah State (17-15) 9:00
UC Santa Barbara (20-10) @ Idaho (18-13) 10:00
Cal State Fullerton (21-9) @ Loyola Marymount (19-12) 10:00

Utah Valley wanted to be a basketball only member in the WAC, and if Utah State and some of the other current schools leave for greener pastures, the WAC with the likes of Denver, Seattle, and Bosie State, may just become a football-less conference, and UVU might just get invited
