"We need to be NDSU!" - hold on Griz Nation

BW, I am not sure that my post, "Eye Opening"is saying anything close to "we need to be North Dakota". It is fair to say we want what North Dakota has right now.
Just for the record, here is what I wrote:

Eye Opening

This year was a good step in the right direction for Griz Football. 10-3 record, beat the Bobcats, and back into the playoffs.
But as I watch the Bison game vs. Coastal Carolina, it is eye opening to see how far we still have to go.................
While I am pleased with the Griz progress this year, I am humbled by how far we still have to go.
Go Griz!

I love it when people call North Dakota State - North Dakota, That is like calling Montana - Montana State!

Reality check. While this site may constitute the meaning of life for a handful of rabid Griz football enthusiasts, it means little in the daily life to most who have found it, including opponent's players and future recruits. It means absolutely nothing (gasp) to the statistical entire population of this state, this country and this planet. So nothing as trivial as other program envy espoused on this site is going to mean a hill of beans to anything.

That said, those that know why NDSU was so good the last 7-10 years (getting D-1 recruits UM (Minnesota) couldn't land) know Jerry Kill (HC MInnesota) has stuffed that pipeline. Bohl knows it in spades, having lost to Kill on that recruiting front for the last couple years. NDSU will fade from the top of FCS for this reason regardless of who replaces Bohl, as long as the Gophers keep winning. Bohl is a great coach, he also had teams loaded with D-1 talent and speed.

By all accounts of anyone who follows NDSU, the 2014 is on paper far and away our best recruiting class ever. Now that might fall apart a bit with Bohl leaving, but we are still constantly going into Minnesota and Wisconsin and coming out with very highly talented recruits that are being passed up.

Unfortunately, Brint, we don't have the coaches we had 2 years ago - the offensive line isn't coached well and neither is the defense, even though Ty said he was better than Breske at the last QB meeting he attended. We had great players this year and last and will have several hold-overs next year. They were recruited by Pflu's most senior coaches. What we need are new coaches. Hopefully, after this next season we will see a coaching change. We have no coach on staff that can take over as head coach. If anyone thinks its Scott Gragg, take a look at his coaching record - and that would be high school coaching because he didn't coach college before coming to Montana as I understand it. And besides, if we want to go in a new direction, as RE said, we should purge ourselves of all the coaches on staff in 2011. Unfortunately, I believe our recruiting will suffer because we don't have a definitive answer about what this program will look like after next year. As others have said, it will be several years before we will be considered a formidable force in any division.

Breske's WSU defense is 101st in Total Defense (447), 91st in Scoring Defense (31) and 91st in Sacks (1.58) this year. UM is 56th in Total Defense (381), 30th in Scoring Defense (22.7) and 28th in Sacks (2.23). Doubt that Gregorak ever said he was better than Breske.

It will be interesting to see how NDSU does next year. One thing that got my attention yesterday is that there were a surprising number of empty seats in the Fargo dome.
2nd half... the game was over... :egriz:

Predict NDSU's record in 2014.

9-2 on way to 13-2 & 4th peat.

17 starters in 2014 will have started or played significantly this year.
QB & 2 O LINE with 1 CB 1 LB GONE.

Hey bud if you're gonna troll on our board at least get your stats right. You have 24 seniors, of which 11 started against Coastal Carolina. So you will lose at least 11 starters and your stud LB was out for season unfortunately so you actually lose 12 starters. You'll still be in good shape with lots of returners who have some experience, but at least know your stats. It is your team after all right?

Resources? Commitment?

....and as some mention in earlier posts, the issue of demographics. Affects fan base (growing numbers of the 'sit down' crowd!). And enrollment/resource issues.

Maintaining or replicating the golden age of the rise of Griz Nation is a big time challenge, FCS. Is way more competitive across all conferences

Really don't want to be NDSU....I think we can re tool UM...it won't come easy

Always...Go Grizzlies

I realize I'm contributing to the mess by creating a new thread but I've seen a handful of posts started today by posters saying the Griz need an overhaul, NDSU has opened their eyes, NDSU is the road map, Delaney and staff aren't like NDSU, look at NDSU, NDSU, NDSU, NDSU, NDSU.

Do you guys realize what it takes to build a program like that?

1. The Grizzly coaching staff, players, and athletic department cannot wake up tomorrow and say, "Hey, we want to be like NDSU now." And suddenly the Griz will be an undefeated team.

2. The team can't just jettison everyone and bring in immediate replacements that will make the Griz an undefeated team.

3. Dominant teams take a long time to build because it's a system, a culture, and a top to bottom understanding of each player and how every little bit of the team works.

Have any of you gone back and seen how long it took Craig Bohl to get NDSU to where it is today? Go back and look. NDSU moved up into a sub-par conference (Great West) and were ineligible for their first 4 years. They went 8-3, 7-4, 10-1, 10-1. Then they move to the Missouri Valley Conference. Their next three years they go 6-5, 3-8, 9-5. Then after that they catch fire 14-1, 14-1, and currently 13-0.

It took Bohl and NDSU 7 years to become the dominant program they are today.

Look at Hauck's Grizzlies. It took him 3-4 years to get the program to it's in-conference dominance and a few more years after that to establish a more dominant post-season team.

--------------

Now snap back to the 2013 Grizzlies. They doubled their win total from 2012, 5 wins to 10 wins. They halved their losses, 6 to 3. Yeah they had some games where the D was beat up badly, or the offense didn't look good. They had close games, they had lucky wins. But they're improving. They've got a ton of questions to answer and gaps to fill, yeah, but thinking all is lost and this team needs to be nuked and rebuilt (to me) is just silly.

--------------

Finally. What's to say the next dominant team isn't being built before our eyes? Criag Bohl a year before NDSU made a deep playoff run had a 3-8 team. There's a lot of bumps and bruises on the path to building a dominant program.

Ease off the ledge Griz Nation. Yes improvements are needed, I'm sure the 2009 NDSU Bison saw needed improvements too. It's about re-building the program, re-installing the culture of dominance, and bringing that up through the ranks. This stuff doesn't happen overnight.

We've seen some GREAT improvement and progression from 2012. I, for one, am hoping this trend of improving success continues.

Go Griz

I'm with you, especially on the last point. If we see same year over year improvement in 2014 that we saw in 2013, I'll be one happy Griz fan

I have ZERO problem with high expectations from the fan base. I have them myself. I have ZERO problem with fans wanting and expecting and wishing their team to be a certain way and win a certain amount. What I have a problem with is fans: A. Thinking they are entitled to those expectations coming true because they buy a ticket or because they choose to donate to the program, or because they they are more passionate than others. and B. Fans turning into mindless, raging idiots, wishing heart attacks on coaches, making racist remarks at opposing players and thinking scholarships should be pulled because their expectations weren't met.

I've said it a thousand times and I'll continue to say it: Your season ticket, your GSA donation, your tax dollars, your passion does not give you the right to anything more than a seat in the stadium and I guess whatever GSA functions come with being a member. You don't get to have a certain amount of wins because of those things, you don't get to have certain plays called because of those things, you don't get to pick the coach because of those things. I don't think I need to go on with that list. I have purchased season tickets, I have donated, and I have NEVER, EVER, EVER BEEN promised any of those things by the University of Montana and I know neither have you. When things go from being passionate to absurd in regards to the fanbase, is when you, as a fan, think that you are OWED those things. You're not OWED those things, and honestly, life is a lot less stressful when you, as a fan, can come to terms with that fact.

+1!

I found that funny as well. By his logic, the Cats have a starting QB coming back too, as well as several on the DL and secondary.

A great post BW. We have the biggest and best fan base, tradition, institutional experience and expectation. That's a hell of a good foundation. Go GRIZ.
