Watson departs

When I read this:

Because Watson left so early in the school year, his departure won't hurt the Grizzlies' academic progress rate, Tinkle said.

“He was here so few days that we were able to wipe the slate clean,” Tinkle said.

Does that mean that he was getting bad grades, or does that mean since he's leaving during the school year a bunch of drops or incompletes won't reflect the teams academic record?

He left within the time allowed to simply withdraw from classes with no penalty. No incompletes, etc. Same that is available to all students.

His departure also frees up another scholarship.

“We've been recruiting a player we really, really wanted to get that we weren't able to offer a scholarship,” Tinkle said. “It opened one up for this kid. Hopefully we'll be able to land him and in the long run we will be alright.”

Here's the quote from the article. Anyone?????? Who is this kid Tinkle really, really wants?

The NCAA has a formula that calculates a school / programs graduation and academic rate. These are published by the NCAA. If a schools rate is to low they can lose scholarships also. When a kid leaves or transfers from a school it is counted against a program in the formula. When a kid leaves a program mid semester/quarter it can have a double whammy. A program can by hit by the kid leaving the program, and the NCAA could count his grades a 12 credits of f's. In Watson's case I am assuming that he quit soon enough in the semester he could simply with draw from classes, thus no academic hit, and since he was only on campus a limited amount of time he really was not a member of team in the NCAA eyes so no transfer hit.

I don't know the answer, but it will give us one more scholarship for 2008. So far, I don't believe any 2008 recruits have come to light. I do think the Griz have made a couple of offers.

At this point who Tinks is recruiting is a guess, but here are some unsigned players 3 stars from 07 class (who knows who fell out other programs), many 2 stars still uncommited (you research). When is the deadline to get a player in school to be eligble? My hope is for a true shotblocking strong bigman and play Hasquet at the 3.

The Griz now have no true wing player. They have 6'3 and under guards, and 6'7" and over forwards/centers.

Hasquet is no where near quick enough to guard your typical D-I wing. Does anybody remember Jameel Pugh from Sac St? That guy was a beast of an athlete. Players like that will absolutely destroy the Griz if they try to go man.

The only consolation is that McGillis will be able to step right in next year. I haven't really seen Hurley play, but I have to believe he needs at least a year before he gets used to the increased physicality at this level.

I hope that the Griz can land at least a defensive wing, so they can actually play man defense every now and then. Otherwise, expect a lot of zone & probably a lot of high scores. This team is going to need to be very efficient on offense if they are going to make a run into the playoffs.
