There were enough hinky things over the years that occurred within the basketball program both publicly and private that would lead any many, no matter how devoted (Wayne gave and gave), to question the support of the school. This was true before Wayne as well. You take the job at the UofM in this era knowing that football is where it is at. There comes a point however, where after awhile it comes harder to not be the least bit annoyed.
Maybe Wayne didn't say it, maybe he did, but as I noted elsewhere a person could derive from a lot of places the UofM may not have done enough to keep a great asset. That is what sticks in my craw, and maybe why it wouldn't surprise me that Wayne would hold that sentiment.
There was never a person more loyal to the program, University and community than Wayne and you don't get those very often. I doubt seriously we could have kept him for a lifetime, but it was sure nice to think about.
