Was that a little dig from Wayne...

There were enough hinky things over the years that occurred within the basketball program both publicly and private that would lead any many, no matter how devoted (Wayne gave and gave), to question the support of the school. This was true before Wayne as well. You take the job at the UofM in this era knowing that football is where it is at. There comes a point however, where after awhile it comes harder to not be the least bit annoyed.

Maybe Wayne didn't say it, maybe he did, but as I noted elsewhere a person could derive from a lot of places the UofM may not have done enough to keep a great asset. That is what sticks in my craw, and maybe why it wouldn't surprise me that Wayne would hold that sentiment.

There was never a person more loyal to the program, University and community than Wayne and you don't get those very often. I doubt seriously we could have kept him for a lifetime, but it was sure nice to think about.

Does Robin Selvig ring a bell? To say "never" is quite a statement. To say Wayne was one of the most loyal would be accurate.

Griz1,

Won't criticize that assessment. Just an assessment about Wayne and his devotion to the program. That is what likely makes him a great hire regardless of what program he chose to go to.

I just however hate comparing anyone to Robin. He is truly unique and his situation was and still is unique. I think it is unfair to expect anyone to be compared to Robin, just as I think it is unfair to compare every quarterback at the University to Dave.

You get those instances once in a lifetime and I think we all guilty of a bit of romanticism with Wayne, but there are some stark realities about the nature of mens basketball and where the UofM sits on that ladder.

Based on Wayne's age, experience, success, and Tres' basketball career, it seemed only natural that Wayne would have had a timetable to explore other coaching jobs. Any quotes attributable to him that could be negatively interpreted would seem highly unlikely based on his overall maturity and media exposure.
