Walk On Question

My son is a high school senior who is planning to attend U of M in the fall. He wasn't having much luck finding any information on what the walk on process looks like for football players who aren't necessarily being recruited. Anyone have or know where to find any information on walking on to the Griz football team? Any help would be appreciated.

He needs to contact Coach Green to get the schedule etc...

It is likely it is not scheduled yet...but, post season the coaches will be working on it. Your son needs to report as directed. There will be several just like him. Good luck to him...hope to see him playing on Saturdays.

Unfortunately no, he has only been playing offense recently. Along those lines though, With wallk ons not having scholarships, do they typically receive anything in terms of financial support to cover any expenses or receive any NIL or anything?

That's what I was thinking. I had mentioned the NIL because I had read an article which mentioned the university having a collective which would be providing NIL money to scholarship and non scholarship athletes. Maybe that isn't the case though.

Generally speaking, most Walkons are invited/recruited into the program as Preferred Walkons. Not sure of the process for those who weren't asked to walk on. Some programs I think do a mini combine type of tryout in the spring, but I think it's based on how many open spots and lockers are available that particular year. Definitely get in touch with the admin of the football office.

I also think preferred walk ons report earlier in the fall before traditional walk ons…or at least used to.

Thanks, that all makes sense. I'll have him reach out to coach Greene to see if he's someone they would be looking at. I know he would like to play but if it doesn't work out he'll be OK with that. He picked Missoula for the degree he's wanting to get, playing ball would be a bonus.
