WAC is blowing up

I bet Idaho and NMSU both wind up in the MWC. They want to round out to 12 teams similar to CUSA.

I don't think NMSU or Idaho have a shot at the MWC. Close to zero actually. Simply better options are on the table and they haven't invested in their facilities. They have shown no commitment to athletics to stay in the FBS.

Texas State
La Lafayette
UC Davis
Montana
Montana St
UTEP

are just 4 of the better options
Or they are waiting for SDSU and Boise to realize the Big East decision is a total disaster and they let them fill the last two spots. I have yet to meet an Aztec fan that is happy with the BE/BW setup they are (as of now) scheduled to join.

good question

Most seem to think the MWC stopped at 10 to wait for 2014 when UTEP and UNT/UTSA can slide west and avoid the exit fees they would pay if they moved in 2013. Meanwhile CUSA then adds in the EAST. UNC Charlotte is added plus another. I doubt we are waiting on Boise or SDSU though who knows.

IMO, from most fans' point of view, UM & MSU in the MWC would be sweet. We'd be playing schools that are interesting and part of our region (the Mountain West) instead of playing the likes Furman, Liberty Bible, Stonybrook, Wofford, SHSU et al. in some "NC" that few really care about. Unfortunately the state of Montana just doesn't have the confidence or the courage to go for it...be nice to be wrong, though. I hear many folks around Missoula sniveling about the big, big money Pflu made and I can't imagine how it would play to many Montanans when a HC at UM and MSU made much more money than any other state employee. Many Montanans would just prefer to stay in a geographical "big empty" state of mind.

So, I'm with BearIt here. I don't think Idaho and NMSU will be left twisting in the wind and will be picked up by MWC.

Interesting point, I’ve seen that thrown around but didn’t know if that was just speculation. Either way the MWC has options at filling the last 2 spots. Worst case for them is they have to add Idaho and NM State. Keep in mind that is assuming getting to 12 and thereby adding a CCG nets its members additional revenue. If that is not the case, is there even a reason for expanding to 12?

The MW has zero interest in these schools.

Well with all the recent news it appears the WAC may just be finished as a football conf. With only Idaho and NMSU left as football members.

With CUSA going to 14 members will the MWC hold tight at 10? I would think they would not. It only seems wise to have at least 12 members to have that conf championship game to bring in a bit more money. Honestly one would think the MWC would go to 14 teams. IF the MWC did decide to go to 14 teams who would they want to round out? They could keep it simple and offer UI and NMSU and offer UM and MSU.. With the Griz and Cats having lights know it would seem to make them a bit more attractive. IF the MWC did off the Montana schools would the Griz and Cats except? Some folks have mentioned BSU and SDSU may decide to come back to the MWC as they find the grass is not greener in the BIG EAST. Even if that happens it would put the MWC at 16 teams. Mega conf look to be the way of the future anyhow. Or we could see the PAC12 what to up the arms race and snag BYU and BSU.

A question if the WAC folds as a football conf would the NCAA allow another FBS conf to start up? Or would loosing one FBS conf dropping to 10 FBS conferences be a better scenario for he NCAA?

We all heard from Jim O'Day say that the face of college football would drastically change over the next couple years. Boy he sure was not kidding!

I just hope that in all these changes our Griz can keep up and not get left farther behind.

Idaho's best chance for survival - while saving some face - would be to see if the BSC and the NCAA would permit the Vandals to operate as an associate BSC member while maintaining its worthless designation as an FBS school. Resuming the regional competition with EWU, Montana, Idaho State is really their only salvation.

No one wants to be seen as taking a step back. The Vandals have plenty invested, including a fair amount of pride, in competing at the highest level of college football.

Had to laugh at this quote. Idaho neither played at (nor competed at) the highest level.

Well, not sure how long you've been around but they did crack the top 25 a couple times.

AZ claims he attended and graduated from Idaho, but I am suspicious of such claims. ;)

Seattle U reports they are committed to the WAC, and WAC commissioner says this:
Conferences need seven members to be "automatic qualifying" conferences, meaning their tournament champion gets an automatic bid to the NCAA basketball tournament.

Hogan said the WAC having the needed number of basketball-playing members is "not an issue. ... There's a lot of interest in the WAC. It's a changing landscape out there and in two, three years, who knows what it will look like."

With the 5 current WAC non-football members, add Bakersfield and UVSU and they would have the 7 BB members needed to continue as a non-football conference.
Wonder if the WAC will take a run at Cal Poly, UCD, Sac State and PSU as all sports members? All have expressed interest in the past. I see that as more likely than Idaho dropping to the BSC.

Given the current budget issues in CA I highly doubt any of the CA FCS programs are considering the WAC.

Why would those schools have any interest in a conference that won't any longer exist as a football conference? Leaving a stable Big Sky for a conference that's all but dead would be athletic suicide. Plus, with the WAC being only at 7 (none of which are good at basketball) schools there's no guarantee that they'd even have an auto-bid to the NCAA basketball tournament.
