Vs. Sac St

Overall a much better game tonight than Thursday, or even last Saturday for that matter. They shot well, they rebouned better than usual.

Q needs to dunk. Plain and simple. He's 7'. And when have you seen him pivot and go up strong then bring it down? Never. Seriously. I wanna see an Oden leg-kicking chest bumping dunk out of qvale asap.

Well, while Sac State may be crappy, these last two games just may be what the doctor ordered. I think the Griz are starting to relax a little bit and play their game. Freethrows appear to be looking easier to make for them.
Both Qvale and Selvig were 55% and 53% freethrow shooters before NAU game. Qvale went 6 - 6 in both these games and Selvig 4 - 4. Qvale went 4 - 4 just this game, and Selvig 2 - 2. Team overall freethrow shooting today is 13 - 14. Mcgillis had to be the one missing the freethrow near the end of the game.

Griz are 3 - 1 in conference. Going to be tougher next week, but maybe they can keep the freethrow shooting up, and maybe keep the good shooting they had today.

Qvale really needs to work on his touch, although I don't know that's something you can learn to improve on. At least his defense was pretty good, in terms of blocking shots.

One thing I don't get, after watching this game and the Washington game, is why Stockton has hardly played. He get a number of assists, steals, rebounds. He was aggressive on both ends, yet played under control. Thought he did a good job of controlling the tempo.

Several of the young people are coming along, like Taylor tonight with his shooting. In fact, with all that depth, I'd think you could press more on defense. That seemed to turn the tide in the first half; the Griz started to press full court and built their first big lead and never looked back.

With AJ at point, Stockton's minutes are going to be mostly limited to blow out wins. You don't take out AJ in a tight game. It was nice to see far more balanced scoring tonight. AJ also did a nice job distributing the ball. He is developing into a heckuva scoring point guard. :)

Oaf? :bad: He was 2 points shy of a double-double and played well defensively.

He would have had it, too, if he wasn't and oaf down low. All the same, I like his defense.

To qualify this, it would be nice, as some other poster noted, for him to go at it with a bit more authority. Just jam the damn ball home or get some touch. Right now he just bumbles when the O rebound hits his hands.

AJ is doing a heckuva job as a scoring point guard. But as I said earlier, that stretch when Stockton came in in the middle part of the first half, and they started to press, is when they built their insurmountable lead. AJ can certainly slide to shooting guard when he's in there. Makes me wonder what would have happened if they had used Stockton in some games earlier this season when they were behind and playing weak defense and sloppy offense. Sometimes when they get behind they just seem to lose their desire, and Stockton seemed to be trying to push them out of that in the UW game.

Its not like I know the kid or anything. It's just after seeing him play a couple games, I've seen him show some skills the griz seem to need, and its puzzled me that he's gotten in just a few minutes of play. In fact, he might have played more minutes tonight than he gotten in all the other games combined this year. So maybe he's just finally learned the system well enough to earn the minutes.

Wow, how things have turned the past 3 games! This fan is slowly getting back to the 12-4 conference optimistic verses the 9-7 attitude after the PSU debacle. Alot has happened as a team and for a few individuals we have been looking for the better part of 2 seasons.

(1) We finally found a true leader in Anthony Johnson, not to mention one damn right great scorer and defender.

(2) It appears this team is starting to realize, and hopefully stick with it, not to let your offense effect rest of you game.

(3) We have found a niche defense in the 1-3-1, which still can be improved.

(4) Players are falling into roles

(5) Qvale is back to rebounding again. He is looking to be improving offensively too.

(6) McGillis and Taylor appear to finding their games, and could not be at a better time than the front end of confernece play.

(7) We are hitting FTs

(8) Offensive continuity is coming back, but still needs improvement.

(9) Tinkle is learning to go with who is getting the job done and what is working any given game. I think he has always tried to be "fair" in player minutes and ball distribution. This alone, is a HUGE positive for this year and his coaching career. I hope he continues with the newer attitude.

(10) The little things are showing up much more.

The telling tale is coming in the ISU, Weber State, EWU road swing. W/L's aside, this team needs to keep doing what they are doing. If they come away from it 2-1 that will be a great sign. They need to improve rebounding, depth, and offensive continuity. Icing on the cake will be Hasquet finding his "complete" game again and put an end to his rollercoaster ride this year. I honestly feel McGillis will still improve some statisically, and Taylor will continue to be a huge contributor off the bench. His Sac State performance was more of what I was expecting from him this whole time.

It is nice to know that when this team struggles offensively that they can play defense and can rely on Anthony Johnson taking over the offense when needed.
