VPN: You may want to consider this to get ESPN 3.

I just chatted with customer service at Strong VPN, a VPN provider and asked them if I could use their service to view ESPN3. Their response: We are sorry to report that ESPN3 does not work on any VPN provider. This is due to the network locking down usage to specific known provider IP protocols. So no, it's not going to work with these outside VPN providers.

Good on you. I guess you should give up on the idea then.

Wait a minute.....I am not trying to argue with you. Does it make sense to spend money to purchase a service to try to do something that the person selling you the service says it will not do?? That seems dumb to me.

You misunderstand me. I am sure you got correct info about the one vpn that you contacted. But, I know that this works. And, furthermore, when you post a negative comment here, you dissuade others that want to see the Griz game next week from trying this viable alternative. So, rather than just writing that you heard it won't work, write that StrongVPN won't work but the other vpns might.

the guys line that ESPN3 does not work on ANY VPN provider is not true

Point taken. My concern is that someone posts something that might work, and people go rushing to try it without doing the proper research. I wouldn't want people to go sign up with any old VPN provider and pay good money only to find out that it's not going to work anyway. I got the Strong VPN from the second link you provided, at the bottom of the page where VPNs are listed. So, word to the wise - make sure and do your due diligence before you pay money for a VPN. It may work, or not.

True. I put a warning on my first post.

Yeah I know you know, I was trying to point out to the other poster what part we were saying is incorrect

I think we are probably talking apples and oranges. If you can use a VPN to log into an educational institution or other ISP which contracts with ESPN, then it appears to work. However the pay to use VPNs seem to be a different story. I am contacting the pay to use VPNs and haven't found one that works yet. So my comment about VPNs not working was really only referring to the pay to use VPNs. I am not a techie so this is all beyond me, and I am sorry if I am making incorrect statements but this is how it appears to me at present.

My son is a student at NM Tech, so i would think that maybe their IP would have access, but he isn't aware of having VPN access.

Your sons schools IP will have access to ESPN3 if the school has their IP set up to read it is edu, however I know for a fact not all colleges have this set up properly.

If their servers are .edu, you can access ESPN 3 on campus. If the school also has a vpn option, you can use the vpn to log into the edu server from anywhere in the world and access ESPN 3. Some schools (like the University of Montana) do not use a vpn. Rather, they use proxies. Some school proxies will allow you to watch ESPN 3, but it is not guaranteed because proxies can be set up in a way that sends out your original ISP/IP address.

His email addy is .edu so that part should be fine. I will have him check on the VPN. Thanks for the tip.

Buy the little Apple TV box for $99 and watch ESPN3 in full HD on your big screen. Nothing else required.

Unfortunately you still need to be a subscriber to an ISP that gets you ESPN3. So it's a lot like having XBox Live and ESPN3. According to Apple's site:

9. WatchESPN is free for users who receive ESPN as part of their cable or satellite TV subscription from participating providers. ESPN3 is free for users with participating high-speed Internet service providers.

If you have an apple computer to be able to airplay it. The watchespn app on appletv doesn't work, for me anyways, even with bresoptimarter.

And every time I try to verify my ISP, the optimum website just says service not available. I can watch on espn3 though
