Here's some video and audio from today's UM press conference where it was announced that Mick Delaney had signed a two-year contract as head Grizzly Football coach. Enjoy!

Is it possible that the administration knows that a two year penalty is coming and they are just trying to keep the ticket sales going for as long as they can?

Echo that - what a joke.

If the University attempts to skirt the real issues again, the Griz fans will begin leaving in droves and/or Pres E. will be fired, tarred and feathered...or better be!

The Bobcat fans on Bobcat Nation are all convinced the "timing" of this is very "strange" and that it is obviously a stunt to try and get good publicity before the NCAA drops the hammer on us tommorow  Of course they think that.

Has nothing to do with recruiting, establishing leadership in the program, or that Fall Camp starts next week.

*2 weeks... well 11 days to be precise.

But yeah - no way they'd want to shore up and solidify recruiting, leadership, the season, the current kids on the roster, and for the current staff employed. I mean, they only said that about 5 times over this morning.

I think the big deal is recruiting (they have a great start!)and to keep the assistant coaches on board.

i think it's great to have Mick in charge  ..... his statement about making sure he covers the point spread in butte - very accurate :thumb:

Is there any reason NOT to announce good news -- anytime? And I think the majority of Griz fans will see it this way. I am surely hoping that someone at "the U" (I grew up in Missoula so...) is starting to think about the need for positive PR. If you say nothing then only the neggies will have a voice. And I don't mean "make news" like the Missoulian prints, I mean real stuff like the Delaney announcement -- and I hope many more such postive things to come.

Not to be a putz, but for those of us who don't follow Montana high school sports and basically just the Griz, I am curious as to why so many think the new coach is great. Not being negative here, in fact, glad to hear there is a PERMANENT coach that can remove doubts about the program, but what exactly does he bring to the table. I remember him in High School, and glad another Butte guy makes good, but is the record that great or are the expectations founded upon optimism. Looking for honest info, not crap...

Well, I think the "Montana Guy" thing resonates with a lot of fans. If Robin Pflugrad were from Great Falls instead of Eugene, I think he would have been treated a lot differently by fans. Delaney brings a tough "no-nonsense attitude that lots of fans on here deparately wanted. But as far as his abiblity to make decisions and adjustments during game time, and how well his team is prepared mentally and scheme wise remains to be seen. But I think he will do a good job.

Plus he has kind of been the main "Montana recruiter" since he got here with Bobby Hauck. So a lot of the best instate players already have a relationship with Mick, which is already showing dividends in recruiting.

I hope you are right. Montana has been lucky to have a string of capable coaches but there has not been a time recently where it seems the situation demands a better than capable coach. Keeping my fingers crossed.
The good news: 37 more days and we will find out!!!!!!

Every program Mick has been associated with has been successful. Interestingly enough when the HC he was behind moved on they in most cases have fallen pretty flat.

He is sort of an anomally in coaching especially in college. He loves the game, thinks the game is to develop players into better men (sorta like Don Read) lacks the "attitude" and ambition that many have so team first.

Believes a let down in ANY area will lead to failure on the field.

Uh....neat news for Mick, BUT, didn't Pflugrad and O'Day also have contracts? Seems that Engstrom has offered and broken and non-renewed contracts so far in his tenure at U of M, right? Not sure I would feel anymore comfortable being the real HC now than if I was an interrim HC what with the turmoil in GRIZland.

I was really impressed with the job Delaney did with our running backs. There are always really talented athletes in the BSC (think of the running back at NAU, others like him at Portland State, CSU - Sacramento, Cal Poly SLO, etc.) but the Griz have gotten maximum productivity out of their running game.

Mick Delaney was named Montana's interim head coach in March 2012 after four seasons as assistant coach/associate head coach. The interim tag was removed in late July, shortly before the start of the 2012 season.

He spent the previous four seasons coaching the Griz running backs.

In 2009 he was elevated to assistant head coach and continued to work with the running backs.

He was instrumental in the development of running back Chase Reynolds, who rushed for 4,067 yards and a school-record 52 touchdowns the previous three seasons.

A veteran mentor, Delaney is beginning his 44th year in the coaching ranks and his 29th at the collegiate level.

He is originally from Butte. He came to Montana from Colorado State where he was an assistant coach for former head coach Sonny Lubick for 15 seasons from 1993-2007.

Prior to coaching the Rams, Delaney was the head coach at Western Montana in 1991 and 92; was the athletic director at Montana Tech (1983-85); and was an assistant football coach at Montana State (1976-80).

He began his coaching career at Butte Central High School (1964-67), and then moved on to Great Falls High School (1969-76). He coached with the Grizzlies in 1968 and 1969.

He earned his B.A. in education at UM-Western (Western Montana College) in 1964. He is an inaugural inductee into the Western Montana College Sports Hall of Fame.

Mick and his wife Cheri have three children, son Mike, daughters Shauna Basile and Melissa Ossello, and nine grandchildren.
