That was as gritty a road win as we've had.
give props to Idaho
Got a little selfish offensively; challenged some guy's manhood and intellect.
A lot of guys contributed. Spencer really woke up at halftime.
Nice to out rebound a team. Proud of the players.
As young as we are, couldn't be more proud of the way we played.
Told Ward not to worry about protecting yourself. He showed his leaderhip.
Great team win.
Players are VERY excited.

Gregory played outstanding ball control down the stretch & whenever Ward got the ball he converted. Griz outrebound the Vandals 34-31.

Hard to comment without watching, but nice win. Sounds like it could have been cleaner, but it shows heart, guts, and mental toughness.
Once we get Cherry back and hopefully alter the rotation to play our best guys the most minutes and the team should do well.

You were right on that one. I did get to watch, though off and on since I am on my own with four kids for the night, and Hutch just can not finish no matter what he does. It's a shame. I don't know what it is, the ball gets there and he either over-thinks it and half the time just over powers his own shot. I hope he can calm himself down out there. I'm pulling for him and you would think that with Tinkle as his coach, he will eventually put together a better performance.

More stats:
Griz shoot 48 % from the field to 42% for the Vandals. Griz nail 7-for-15 from beyond the arc (47%) to 26% for the Vandals. Griz get 5 blocks but turn the ball over 15 times compared to Idaho's 9. Points: Jamar 17, Ward 16, Coleman 9

Thanks for the stats, GJ. The turnovers are a bit concerning, but you certainly can'f find much wrong with the rest of those stats.
One thing I sense about this team versus many other Griz teams is that this one is a team that believes it SHOULD win basketball games. That hasn't always been the case with Griz teams. But these guys seem to play with a bit of a swagger. And I LOVE it.

DeShields had a bad night... 3 or four turnovers on passes. Gregory took control down the stretch, got two assists late. It'll be a good learning experience for Keron. Jamar had 3 assists. Coleman had 5 rebounds and two assists.

I think that is the 1st time I had a comfortable read on the GRIZ from the 1st game. Normally, it takes me about 7 to 10 games. Imagine how much better they can get when the post play gets better. Huge improvement tonight in post defense though, I loved Martin stepping up to make a defensive impact in the paint.

Once Cherry is back and the youth continues to develop this team can be very good. I was skeptical that we would be able to go to the tourney this year over Weber before the season started. After watching them I think we can if we play the right people and let them mature.

Great come back win witnessed on a not-worth-ten-bucks video feed. I like to see wins like that. Some guys had rough games and we found ourselves down big but they found a way to win. Like it has been said, it shows that they expected to win the game. Good stuff.
I liked keeping Deshields on the bench, hopefully it will help him get his attitude sorted out. That kid has the potential to be a great player but he has to learn to trust his teamates and play a team game. There are times I think he could be as good as Cherry then there are times like last night when he shouldn't be on the floor because he is killing the team. He is young so I am confident that with Tinkle's help he will get it fixed.
I am one that is still hopeful for Hutchison but if Martin continues to improve at the rate he is now it might not matter if Hutch comes around. Andy really has big potential and looks like he might be a great find for us.

Offensively, he can only mature, and learn. I honestly believe the GRIZ have the depth and support around him to have him play a larger role. Let Hutch man up on bigger stronger posts, and develop Martin against teams not so strong there. Even against real strong posts, have him give them room, and contest them when they shoot, again like Selvig did last season. Cannot give a post player strength over night, so why have them battle it? Use his length to our advantage.
I have a good feeling, Wayne will bring Andy a long similar to how he did Jamar as a Freshman, very progressively, and selectively. I too like Martin's upside. I have no doubt, he will learn, and eat up all the teaching, like a sponge. :thumb:

That said, something that Citay wrote earlier in this thread (I think) about "certain" Griz players who make their presence known early in their careers, is sticking with me. Martin is starting to show that presence already. His two blocks of Barone's shots last night against Idaho are proof. Martin's first block of the Barone's shot was so forceful, it knocked the Idaho senior (6-10) Vandal to the floor. He's already showing a defensive presence... Now, Martin just needs to slow the game down on offense. Twice he fumbled sure assists... the second being a "handoff" from Keron DeShields that he dropped & let bounce through his legs! Had he held on to either "assist," he'd have had two dunks.
Montana's small ball lineup (love watching Henderson in that pressure defense!) is winning games, but when the big lineup with Hutch and Martin at the anchor (& Wiley showing spot action) gets more experience, we'll see a multidimensional Montana attack that could be something powerful. Can't wait to see it unfold.
