Utah State gets a Mt kid.

Attendance the first year after remodel was only slightly less than the last year before the remodel. from 4,455 per game during 1997-98 down to 4,372 during 1999-2000. decline of less than 100. so, remodel didn't exactly lose the students.
Attendance dropped from 1992 on. Not exactly because of not winning. Griz were champions or co-champions for two or three seasons after that. 1996-97 they won 23 games and went to the NCAA.

So, it wasn't the lack of winning (the Griz did win), and it wasn't the remodel (attendance was basically the same). but, What lost the students is the change to semesters in 1993-94 season and after.

Exactly! :thumb:

Good luck to Riley as he follows his dream. Something to keep in mind ; with Riley , maybe Montana is better then Utah State, the fieldhouse is sold out and they are ranked in the top 25 .

The Griz have been winning the last few years and rarely draw even 5,000 fans. In the early 90s students were passionate about basketball. The remodeling of Dalhberg Arena and the year in Sentinel hurt the program and students lost interest.

It will be difficult to win consistently when you lose your top in state kids because of the poor atmosphere. How many good football players have chosen U of M over other schools because of the support and facility?

You are right about Stew Morrill being a nice guy and he will be at Utah State throughout Riley's career. TInkle will more than likely not be at U of M that long. This was also a major factor in his decision.
Griz attendance (including student attendance) started declining several years before the remodel. :thumb:

Lack of Marketing and Promtions killed Griz Basketball. You guys realize that UM Athletics Marketing Department consists of one person right? The same lady that runs the UM dance team. A recent study done by UM's business students showed that 60% of UM students don't even know that Griz Basketball games are free to get into.

I agree with you. The BB program plays second fiddle to football, in terms of marketing.

I still can not understand why a kid who is not Mormon would want to go to a school that is 90% Mormon, no matter how strong the BB program is! This kid could be the difference-maker in raising the Griz BB team into the Sweet 16, much like Gonzaga getting a couple of key players did many years ago. He should re-consider and stay home. He will not like going to Utah State.

I am hoping we will get him anyway after he finds out how pathetic college life is in Logan.

Many people would say the same thing about an athlete coming to Montana or Missoula where 87% of the population is white and the next biggest population is the native American. The other ethnic groups make up very small single digit numbers. But they do!

Mslacat, you just best quit posting that gibberish.

Growler: I am not sure you are looking at Utah State the way a basketball player would. It might not be tops in "college experience" as you say, but I would imagine a dedicated athlete such as Bradshaw is more concerned with other isssues than who has the better parties. Being that basketball is going to be his top priority and that you are going to have a hard time finding a better b-ball atmosphere and program on this side of the Mississippi, it seems that USU is a great choice and place for a kid like him.

On another note, I think it is overly optimistic to think that if he came here he would turn us into Gonzaga-east. Anthony Johnson didn't do it. Will Cherry isn't going to do it either and I personally have a really hard time thinking he is going to better than either of those guys. I think he will be successful in Logan, but a program maker?? I think that idea is unrealistic and maybe a little unfair to expect.

Look, unless this kid has aspirations to play professionally after college, playing for Utah State offers nothing over playing for the Grizzlies. I can assure you that Utah State gets little respect nationally, even though they win 23-24 games almost every year. So do a lot of other programs. But their conference gets no respect.

Have you ever been to Logan? There is nothing to do there, and with the huge Mormon population, having fun is not allowed, unless your idea of fun is holding hands with your girlfriend while sipping a caffeine-free drink in the student center. This kid will hate going to school there, if he is a normal kid. There is more to attending a college than basketball.

Excuse me are we talking about the same Utah State coached by Stew Morrill. The same Utah State that usually makes the NCAA tourney 3 out of every 4 years. The same Utah State that it is not uncommon to see break into the top 25 every so often. The same Utah State that has a 294-99 win record under Morrill, and Morril has consistently turned down other schools offers.

About the only negative thing I can say about Morril is that every year USU does tend to dump players more quickly than some pier schools seem to do.

If we are talking about the same Utah State, I see a big difference!

You are missing my point. Utah State may get into the NCAA almost every year. But, they still never get to the Sweet 16, and thus get no respect nationally. They are just another win on the way for the real contenders.

If this kid is not good enough to play in the NBA, which is highly improbable, then what does Utah State offer that Montana does not? There is much more to choosing a college than just basketball. Morrill is a great coach. So what? Logan and Utah State is not a quality collegiate experience for non-Mormons. That's all i'm sayin'. After four years of BB at Utah State, this kid will look back and wished he had gone to a school with a better college atmosphere. This has NOTHING to do with Stu Morrill!

Also, I believe USU average about 8-9k fans per game.

Great college bball atmosphere. FAAAAAAAAAR better than any place in the big sky conference. Probably better than all/most PAC-10/12 schools in terms of atmosphere.

See, everything is about basketball and "BB atmosphere". There is more to college for these kids than BB, although most of you do not understand this. What about "campus atmosphere"?

Then why don't more PAC 10 calibre players go to Logan for their great basketball atmosphere? Thanks for proving my point!

I guess Growler is a barometer for what kids should and should not like about an University. Growler, maybe USU and Logan are not a good fit for you, but you do not speak for anyone else.

I don't often agree with Growler on Griz hoops, but in this thread I'm right with him! I spent a summer ed conference session in Logan a few years past and nearly went stir crazy. Toward the end of our session the president of USU, having heard of some conference attendees' "complaints" about Logan's sorry night life, defended the community. He argued that Logan had a robust night life, supported by facts: the highest per-capita birth rate in the country at that time (true).

My lasting memory of Logan was the intermingled odors of cattle, manure & cheese.

You don't agree with me often on Griz hoops? What, you enjoy being wrong all of the time??? :o

Seriously, Logan is an armpit. No amount of "quality basketball" could make me sign to play there. I predict this kid transfers at some point.

growler, safe to say "If Utah State offered you, they likely would not be in position to get the ones they do." (sorry to good of an opening to resist.)
