Why would Wyoming and WAZZU want to join a conference like that? I'm sure the Mountain West would let WAZZU join if they can't find anything else, and there's no way Wyoming leaves for that much worse conference.

Not sure I agree. There currently is such a state of flux, if Bodnar and Haslam are awake and in the front row, there could be a good opportunity for UM.

But the state of flux is all about money, and UM doesn't bring anywhere near enough to be a factor.

Montana is no stranger to Wyoming. We were in the Skyline Conference with them and have played them a few times since. North Dakota State and South Dakota State, not to mention Montana State and Montana with Wyoming would be an interesting conference. Throw in Idaho, Washington State and it could be plausible.

I don't disagree that that that was the case in the past, but it does not sound like they want to do that, at all.

Burman: I do. Now I’m not naïve enough to say that you can bank on that in 2023, but the Front Range schools, and I would include New Mexico in that, and then I would say Utah State is very similar to us, we need to stay together, and we need to be strong. I would say this in the Mountain West Conference, if we all would stay together and not be fooled into thinking there’s something greater out there and joining a Power 5 league because the Pac-12, no matter who they add, is not going to be an Autonomous 5 league for very long. It’s clear and everybody around the country is talking about that. It’s just a matter of time and that will change its financial model dramatically, in my opinion, speaking for Tom Burman. So, I think that’s clear. We all need to stay together. The four along the Front Range and Utah State need to stay together.

I don't think they want to leave those schools to play with a bunch of FCS teams, and WAZZU certainly doesn't want that.

The most generous interpretation that would open a path for UM to move to an FBS conference is if the Pac-Whatever takes the top Mountain West schools and the leftover MW schools decide to forgo the UTEPs and North Texas's of the world to invite us to join them. I think that's pretty unlikely.

I think it's far more likely that "FBS" as a moniker will cease to exist, and every team not left in the new Power 4 conferences will be stuck doing their own thing, playing for their own championship. In other words, schools like WAZZU and Wyoming are going to move heaven and earth to make sure they aren't left on the outside (which may be impossible, at this point).

Trust me, I'm on the side that thinks if we ever got the chance, I'd love to see us move up, assuming we could afford to do so.

I just don't think we're going to be able to be very proactive about where we end up. The changes coming are going to be so seismic that preparing for something resembling the current system likely won't do us any good.
