Utah Safety Jeilani Davis Commits

Myself and Houghton were talking about this on the ESPN show recently....Someone also mentioned in in the basketball thread...

It's so hard to evaluate players who are leaving a school and all the reasons why, plus to evaluate the fit they have as an incoming player at a school like Montana. BUT if UM was getting these players out of high school, that would be unbelievable recruiting. And it's highly unlikely that practicing and training in a Power 5 program is making them worse at football/basketball.

If the Griz beat USC, Utah, Wisconsin, UCLA, Louisville, Wazzu, Colorado and many others for this kid out of high school, our collective minds would be blown. And conventional wisdom says that at least a few of his previous suitors probably got on the mix a second time around.

So that's our evaluation: players like Davis and Micah Harper are great recruits. Certainly plenty could derail them for becoming good players, but pretty impressive job in the portal for the Griz.

Great addition to the defensive side of our team. Some how, some way things are coming together. Like I've said for several months this year may be special. The magic is in the air.
Although it's only on paper for now, team depth going into a season has never been deeper in my memory--September can't get here fast enough !!!

Great points.

A number of bub trolls are on the record as openly disagreeing with you, however. Well, at least about GRIZ fbs transfers. They probably love the bub ones.

Do the bubs have any??

Not many, but the few they have appear to be good. The Rutgers WR Chris Long looks like a really good addition for them. They also got a Stanford QB and a BYU RB. Plus a couple JC guys.

The facts are that most players going to the FBS out of high school are qualified to be there. That is why the Griz do not get them and never will as a FCS school.Sure there is an occasional one that slips thru,if they are found then they are gone from here. Snagging them in the portal is a great opportunity but keep in mind that there is a reason they transferred down and usually their play tells you why.

Just wanna say thank you for posting here more often lately. You’re a bit of fresh air to what is usually a pretty big shit show on eGriz, a good bit I’m in the middle of. ESPECIALLY this time of year. Thanks again.

I have been critical of Hauck many times. Sometimes deserved, most of the time probably not. How can anyone be critical of this coaching staffs efforts in the recruiting area? They have hit the portal hard. Can they get a team to gel and compete? Yet to be seen, but certainly lots to be hopeful for. I really don’t know that they could do any better. Some very good prospects in the hopper. Much better than the team to the east. Bozeman has some holes on their O line that are a challenge to fill. Griz seem to have identified weaknesses and opportunities and they have addressed those. I am very optimistic looking at the depth and potential the Griz have for this season.

Cats also got an interesting transfer in George Helms. He is an Elon transfer...but he's from Big Sky, Montana. He went to a prep school in Florida before then landing at Elon and then making his way back to Montana. He was a good Class C player but have no idea how good he is now.

I've wondered quite a bit if that's a path for Montana kids, especially in basketball. Not necessarily just prep schools, but also junior colleges. You saw Seth Amunrud from Manhattan Christian go from Class C to Dawson CC before making his way back to Montana State.

We saw this with Raequan Evans where he went to North Idaho JC and many thought he was fast-tracking to the Griz before Larry Krystkowiak offered him and his recruiting blew up. He ended up at Florida State.

I know that Montana kids are often "under developed" even though they have wonderful potential. Seems like so many kids who go out of state for a year or two and develop eventually find their way back to the level and the program they want to be at. Interesting to me more Montana kids don't try the JC route.

With the portal, the JC and CC routes may become more advantageous for MT high school kids to develop and show their potential before transferring up.

The staff has done a good job this year. How many of these transfers are available or moving out of programs due to the impending house settlement? Lots of programs were really having to figure out how to trim rosters down to get to the limit. I think many of the FBS programs assumed it would be finalized by now. This is a unique year, and I think we made the most of it to not only help us right away but set us up for the future as many of these guys have multiple years.

Can they gel is the big question mark. Bobby might want to go knock on coach Decuires door if he hasnt already. Last years hoops team bought in like they had all been playing together for 4 years. Was pretty amazing to watch. Hope the same for our boys on the gridiron this year. Welcome JD!
Jel, is one thing, but learn the complicated defense, especially pass defense lineups, D's and calls is another thing. Maybe the D will get less complicated, at least early on. There seems to be huge talent on the D this year. Talent is great, but, as you point out, it's more or much more than that. Especially in the complicated modern D's.

I'm glad we are where we are now, but this is the kind of effort I would have liked to have seen in years past where these opportunities have been available. It seems like there was pseudo portal denial for a while with a mentality of only using it if absolutely necessary, and now it seems like we've joined the party and are taking every advantage we can get. This is what it takes to compete in todays college football, whether you agree with it or not, you have to play the portal game to win.
