Hello Griz fans. Coyote fan here coming to your board for some assistance. We have a group of about 40-50 making the trip out west to Missoula for the opener. I am coming in from Spokane as my wife and I are heading to the Couer D'Alene for a few days after the game.

I need some help in determining where to stay. I want something nice and has a good reputation. Secondly, can you give me the name of a great restaurant/steakhouse that would serve our group plus some from your group that might have a meeting room or something like that? Lastly, what are our tailgate options on the day of the game? Do you invite fans from the "other team", or do we need to get a spot reserved? I played there in 1975 and have 2 rememberances. The first was the overall beauty of the area. The second was during game people flew hand gliders off the ledge and over the field. I thought that was cool as hell. I was a freshman at the time, just enjoying the sight until I heard my name called to go into the game. Haha. Got the crap beat out of me if I recall correctly, but was worth the trip.

Here is also where I want your opinion. I travel to a lot of games, and the biggest benefit is getting to meet fans from other schools. Here's my idea. The reason I want a room for a short program is twofold. First, I would like someone from your fan base to come and speak to our group about UM. The history of the school, and something about your team. Secondly, would you as a fan base be interested in joining us for a Friday Night Tailgate get together? Have a few drinks and share some general BS? I think it would be a lot of fun but maybe that doesn't appeal to you at all.

I would appreciate your comments and ask you to chime in about my thoughts. Have a great day. Looking forward to Big Sky country already. I love football.

P.s. for what it is worth, I thought the BSC was our best option.

There ya go, Griz nation! Time to party! I do remember flying my hang glider over the games when the field was by the golf course.....different days indeed!

Yeah Griz fans don't tailgate. Show up half an hour before the game. Watch the pre-game warmups. Watch the game. Go home. No fun to be had at Griz games.

Actually its quite an experience. One that you will usually end up talking about for years to come. You are about to get flooded with good ideas. Hope you enjoy your time in Missoula!

One option for dining is the Montana Club (406) 541-8141. The pro side is that the food is reasonably priced, has two locations, and has enough room to accommodate your whole party. The con is that it's a ways from the stadium and is more like an Applebees type of restaurant so the food is good but not great in my opinion.

For the best steak in town, in my opinion, go to Guy's Lolo Creek Steakhouse (406) 273-2622. The pros is that it's the best steak in town and probably can accommodate your whole party. The Con is that it's a little drive to get there, about 20-30 min. from the Double Tree, but you may find it's worth the trip.

My preference for amenities would be the Double Tree (406) 728-3100. The pros of this is that it's literally a walk away from the stadium and right on the Clark Fork. The con is that it's more expensive for older rooms, but you are likely to get a group rate if many of your party would stay there. It also has a pretty good restaurant that some qualify as fine dining.

For the best fine dining in town, go to the Red Bird. The pro is that it's the best fine dining restaurant in town. The con is that it probably can't accommodate your whole party, and the tab would be pretty big because you pay for what you eat there.

Not sure about someone talking to your group but there are others on here who would have that information. If you're not getting the answers you need, contact Greg Sundberg (406) 243-6481. He's the Associate Athletic Director so pretty busy, but also one of the best guys I've ever been around.

Good luck and you've got a hell of a coach now. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Coyotes can do in the next few years.

My recommendations

Hotel: Holiday Inn Downtown- Downtown, along the banks of the Clarks Fork , 15 minute walk to the stadium along the river and then across a bridge that takes you right to the edge of campus and the tailgating areas. Resonably priced, clean rooms, best location.

Food (Large Party): For a party that large, Guys Lolo Creek Steakhouse would be the place. Plus it would be a great experience for your group as its a nice drive through the Bitteroot. And their meat is the best in the area.

The great downtown food places are The Depot (Best food in town, pretty pricey), Double Front Chicken (If you love fried chicken go to this hole-in-the wall and eat as much chicken as you can), Bigga Pizza, Sean Kelly's (Irish pub/restauraunt), The Iron Horse.

Drinks: You gotta check out the Mo Club while in Missoula. One of the oldest sports bars in town that has been around since the 1910's I believe. Lots of cool sports memorabilia. Other bars, Red's, Bodega's, Stockmans, you will all see tons of Griz fans.

Wear your South Dakota gear downtown and at the tailgates and you will get treated like kings. I'm not joking either, you will have no problem finding friendly Griz fans to tailgate with and drink with at the Bars.

For a group that size, the DoubleTree. For everything. You can walk to the game, walk downtown after the game, have dinner in the restaurant (Finn & Porter), etc. Downtown is where it's at!

I appreciate the great feedback. The one question yet to be answered is...." is there a group of fans that would like to join us for a Friday night pre game party? "

I have talked with Coach Glenn and he indicated he would try and slip away to join our booster group and would be a great time for some of you to renew old friendships. If you don't think we can pull this off, then I won't try and get it done.

Is there someone from this board or elsewhere that would like to co-coordinate with me a Friday night get together?

All you the SD fans will have a great time. There are many great tailgates, and many fans hit them all. Where your school's gear proud, the bars, and the tailgates will treat you all well.

Take in Kettlehouse, and Big Sky breweries as well. :thumb:

I don't even think you'll need to coordinate anything. Just post on this board where and when it'll be, and you'll have plenty of folks stopping by, especially if Joe is there.

So, did you play for Joe Salem? was Nusier still around?

My brother played for Joe Salem his first year at USD (66). Joe recruited me his first year at NAU, but I stayed back and played for USD from 75-78. Salems first year at Northern Arizona was 75.

Our families are good friends though. Joe lives in Sioux Falls today
