URGENT CALL TO ACTION Senate Floor Vote on Williams TOMORROW

My problem with what Williams said is that it implies that:

(1) If UM had done better background investigations on the athlethes it recruited, those investigations would have uncovered "character flaws" that might reasonably have led UM to believe these guys would turn out to be "thugs."

-OR-

(2) UM purposely did not do background investigations because UM's priority was to win games rather than to recruit athletes who had good character.

Both of the above assumptions are patently false. "Background" checks will likely not tell you anything substantive about an eighteen-year-old kid. And by leaping to these assumptions, Williams has demonstrated that he is unfit to be a regent, where possessing good judgment is crucial.

That should be the argument against Williams' confirmation.

If you choose instead to attack his integrity, his politics, his personality, his wife, etc., then you're making the mistake of focusing on personalities rather than issues, and you will lose that argument.

Just my two cents' worth.

Great work Brint but you're wrong about Pat Williams. I'll be sending the e-mail and making the phone calls in support of Pat Williams. :thumb:

Nope. Colt Anderson, Marc Mariani, just to name a couple, are not thugs, as PW has labled them. PW had the chance to clarify his generic statement and clear up the intent, but chose to not do so. Fck PW, this coming from a lifelong democrat also!

Again, you're generalizing Pat's statements. Pat did not say "UM ONLY recruits thugs", "UM recruits nothing but thugs", "all UM football players are thugs", "only thugs are recruited to/play for UM".

Suppose Pat had said "UM recruits blue-eyed kids", "UM recruits redheads", "UM recruits tall kids", "UM recruits.... you could then assume that the following statements are not true... "UM recruits only blue-eyed kids", "UM recruits only redheads", "UM recruits only tall kids". It's not that difficult to grasp.

grizbrokebacker1~~We can argue over his wording all day long. The real problem now is that controversy is following him everywhere. This is not what the BOR needs. Time to move forward not stay mired in the past.

Me too.

ME 3 :thumb:
ME 4 ( with the exception of ever being a democrat.....)

 +1

PW just needed to find enough humility to explain or clarify his remarks, problem being that he's simply too full of himself to do that. IMO this sends a message to his potential fellow BOR members that he's above the system and above any of them.

The Asshat has sent a letter of "apology" that his words were "so easily taken out of context"

The ironic thing is that since the context was "on the eve of a rape trial, using an overly broad generalization, offering no new information on problems dealt with a full year prior" that taking them "out of context" would be the kindest and most generous thing you could do for PW. The problem is that people took what he said "in context". Shame, shame, shame...

SR-47 is not listed on today's Senate agenda. Typically all bills being debated and voted upon will be shown on the agenda along with voting results. Is this because SR-47 is not being voted on today, or because it is not listed because it is a late addition? Anybody have any further update on the status of the bill, its debate, and its voting results?

Thanks

PW didn't just offend current players and parents. He also offended many, many alumni and former players. He just doesn't get it. That was the lamest "apology" I've ever seen.

In reference to the question about the agenda in the Senate today, SR 47 is listed in "Special Orders" and not Second Reading. It will come up when the Senate is finished with Second Reading.

How is it that everyone from the Missoulian to the Legislature ignores the fact that Pat Williams' remarks came just as jurors were being selected for trial? The scales of justice were out and Pat Williams forcefully planted his thumb on the side he favored. That's just wrong.
And what's this about Pat Williams' comments being taken out of context? Has anyone bothered to speak with the NYT about Pat's claim?
Surely there are regent candidates who are less divisive than Pat Williams. Aren't there?

that has to be the weakest appology ever made...he is not appologizing for what he said, which is on the record and which he stated was thought out and deliberate, but is appologizing and blaming the the reporter for printing it "out of context"? Pat is never wrong nor did he say or do anthing that was injurous to anyone ...it was all the reporter...damn those people!! (typical politician and exactly why he should not be on the BOR, he will not take responsiblity..just wants headlines for personal gratification)

So weak. He still won't admit his statements were a mistake and negatively influenced UM.

"I'm sorry your feelings were hurt after I ran over your dog."
vs
"I'm sorry I ran over your dog and hurt your feelings."

Politician is gonna politician.

His apology is code for: I'm sorry that some people are too stupid to understand what I meant. Hopefully after the vote he will have some more free time on his hands and can join us on egriz. With his arrogance and inability to admit a mistake he should fit right in here.

Here comes the vote. Jonathan Windyboy is jocking for Williams, great leader, blah, blah. Good for tribes etc.

Dave Lewis up. "A regent, for goodness sake that's supposed to mean something" "I think it's time to make a change."
