Next weekend features three face-offs between ranked FCS teams that I can use. (Recall that I don’t do Big Sky games.) There are also a couple games that have pretty credible opponents facing ranked teams. It gets tougher after that because quite a few ranked teams get opponents with losing records, including three that have not yet won a game. But I managed.

As usual, you are allowed two picks, and can change them later.

OBTW: Bobcats "officially" Suck!

Also:GO GRIZ! :egriz:

The ranked team matchups pretty much speak for themselves. You need only decide which higher-ranked team might be overrated.

After a number of down years, Stephen F. Austin has had a surprisingly hot start. Their only loss was to Texas Tech and they kept that game close (28-22 final). Being at home may be just the edge they need to knock off Sam Houston. (Some on eGriz have wondered why SFA isn’t ranked.)

After an opening win at home, Illinois State went on the road, where they lost to an FBS and a ranked FCS opponent. So they’re a solid team and a return home might be just what they need for an upset against Missouri State.

Much the same pattern goes for Western Illinois, which opened with a murderer’s row: FBS Ball State, the Griz, and then EWU. But last week they went on the road and won at Youngstown State. I suspect they can hardly wait to take on Southern Illinois at home.

After their glamorous upset of Vanderbilt, ETSU ran through two cupcakes and barely won in overtime against a mediocre Samford (2-2) team. So, their undefeated record is a bit suspect. Wofford, on the other hand, lost to ranked FCS opponents and won at Elon.

Rhode Island’s undefeated record also seems a bit suspect … their opponents’ combined record is 2-7. Stony Brook may not be a powerhouse, but one of their losses was to a ranked FCS opponent and another to a ranked FBS team.

I tacked on the last matchup for those who think Central Arkansas is better than their record: Those losses have been to an FBS and two ranked FCS teams. On their record, of course, Abilene Christian looks like the stronger team, with their only loss to SMU. But, aside from that, they’ve haven’t faced much in the way of opposition. This game is one of my picks and I see the Bears in a win going away.

Not sure I’m seeing the North Dakota upset of NDSU, even if they are at home. Although UND did get off to a quick start against a pretty good Utah State (3-1) team, they scored just one FG after the first quarter. Other than that, they haven’t played any real opposition (combined 1-6). The opponents for NDSU have been equally weak (2-9), but at least two were from the CAA.

I suspect this may be more hatin’ on the Bison than any realistic expectation of an upset (the reason I don’t do Big Sky games).

Bump ... would like to see more votes.

Also, I'm a bit surprised that no one has yet taken a flyer on the Stony Brook – Rhode Island game. Historically, the Rams have been prone to upsets, losing games they "should" win.

NDSU has yet to win in the Alerus Center (opened in 2001) ... last time NDSU won in Grand Forks was 1997

Illinois State is pissed and at home
Kennesaw runs that brutal option offense
My 2 picks so if you’re a gambler stay away from these as my track record this year sucks almost as bad as the bobcats

So next question, how many times have they played there since say 2010?

NDSU has only had two opportunities to win at the Alerus Center (in 2001 and 2003) and lost both times.

What is Jacksonville States problem. They rotate between sub northern Colorado and mid major FBS. If they could just reign it in and play average they’d hold that 17ish spot all season long. Getting romped 17-0 at halftime right now.

Illinois State wasn't pissed enough.
However, Kennesaw State's option did the job, so I actually got that one right.

I'm looking good on my Central Arkansas pick, but there's basically a whole quarter left.
