The selection committee gifted us with four ranked-vs-ranked matchups in the first round, and all the other games have at least one ranked team. In the end, some of the matchups look at bit one-sided … but “that’s why you play the game.”

Two choices are allowed and you can change your votes later if you want to.

Official verification: Bobcats suck!

The Gardner-Webb at Mercer game is a bit hard to judge. Neither team played really tough FCS schedules. Two of the G-W losses were to FBS opponents, while Mercer got obliterated by Ole Miss. If it was the old SoCon, I’d give Mercer the edge … but it’s not, so I see this game as a toss-up.

Both teams are ranked in the Lafayette-Delaware game, so it remains to be seen how accurate the pollsters judged the strength of the two teams. The Leopards haven’t really played anybody (other than getting pounded by Duke), and lost at home in OT to a mediocre Colgate team. Ordinarily, I’d lean heavily toward Delaware, but the Hens have been so inconsistent I’m not very confident one way or another

North Dakota and Sacramento State are also both ranked. And both have the same overall record. I’d give UND the edge, but only because they are at home.

The record for Nicholls is a bit misleading because two of their losses were to pretty good FBS opponents, and a third was against Sacramento State. Can they go into Southern Illinois and pull off the upset? The Saluukis lost to every halfway decent team they played. So ... if the Colonels are “halfway decent,” they certainly have a chance.

Despite its impressive (9-2) record, North Carolina Central could not even win the title in the weak MEAC. They did win against a couple of CAA opponents, but not anyone the caliber of Richmond. I see this one as a classic “on any given Saturday” game. If the Spiders take the Eagles lightly, they could be in trouble … otherwise, not so much.

Okay, the Drake at NDSU game is here only because the Bulldogs won their conference auto-bid. They got slaughtered by North Dakota and SDSU in two games sandwiched around an NAIA win. After that, they fattened their record on pitiful Pioneer League opponents. Do they have any chance at NDSU? Slim to none, but I felt obligated to include the game in this poll.

On the comparative records, Austin Peay would seem to have a clear edge over Chattanooga. However, the Governors played an absolute cupcake schedule and yet had to go into overtime for two of their wins, and barely squeaked past Stephen F. Austin (3-8) by two points. Granted, the SoCon is only a shadow of what it once was, but the Mocs are definitely the more “battle tested” team.

The Duquesne - Youngstown State game is another that looks pretty hopeless for the underdog … and I can’t change that. Still, two of the Dukes’ losses were to good FBS opponents, and another was to top-10 ranked Delaware. So their record is a bit better than it looks. And the Penguins have not been particularly dominant. I’d say an upset here is not at all out of the question.

Delaware did lose their starting QB to injury in their last game vs NOVA. The backup was also knocked out of the game and they had to go with their third string guy. Sounds like the starter is likely missing significant time. Could be a factor in that one.

Can see why that game is the leading vote-getter right now. Don't know about the severity or when/if they could be back for Saturday ... the most likely source of info is behind a paywall.

What? No one picked Drake to beat NDSU?
That would be awesome if they did
I am shocked at such neglect ... SHOCKED, I say. :o

I suppose the results from their two games with Valley teams (UND and SDSU) might discourage the notion ... combined score 125-14.  (Drake did manage to score one TD in each game.)

Awesome how? That someone picked that choise, or that Drake could pull off the upset? Either way, I suppose.

Anyway, as of now, someone has gone for bragging rights on the long shot.

Can you post the link? Often you can look at the reader version when it’s behind a paywall. The will be two upper case A with one being larger than the other if you try it on your phone. Click on those AA and click show reader. Delegates message board seems to indicate one will be fine the other is not fine.

The title of the article (retrieved from Google) is "Injuries at QB head list of challenges for Blue Hens vs. Lafayette in FCS playoff"

Here's another article, posted yesterday: https://udreview.com/delaware-looks...njury-laden-disappointment-against-villanova/

They were saying the freshman (#3) would probably have to start next weekend. As for the other two:
[Coach] Carty told the media Monday that “it doesn’t look good” for O’Connor, who suffered a “lower-body” injury against Villanova. O’Connor stayed dressed on the sideline, using an exercise bike, but never returned to the game after sustaining the injury.

Marker, who often operated as the No. 2 quarterback this year but filled in impressively for O’Connor against Hampton and Towson University, is expected to be out for the season after a serious injury from Saturday’s second quarter.

Nearing a record number of votes, so that's not an issue (really). So I'm bumping this more to remind people of the fascinating day we have coming up on Saturday.

With Delaware's troubles at QB, those votes are predictable. Personally, I think the most amazing upset would be Drake over NDSU. (No, I did not pick that.) I didn't pick this either, but I'm thinking the Nicholls at Southern Illinois might be a sleeper.

Edit: HAPPY THANKSGIVING, everyone.

If Drake prevents the ugly buffaloes from covering the spread, I would consider that a huge victory for them given how they faired against the MVFC this year.

We can usually expect Craig Haley to be on top of CAA football, but he seems unaware of Delaware's injury problems.

... Notable – Delaware has won the last 14 meetings, but Lafayette poses more formidable competition in a season with its highest win total since 1981. Curtis’ seven games with 100+ rushing yards are tied for the second-most in the FCS (Texas Southern’s LaDarius Owens has eight). The Leopards have the fifth-most sacks (35) among 128 FCS teams, and the pass rush could be a problem for Delaware, which has surrendered 27 sacks. Ryan O’Connor (1,907 passing yards, 17 TDs, seven interceptions) is the Blue Hens QB when healthy, but Zach Marker (678-3-2) has made two starts and Nick Minicucci came off the bench against Villanova last week. Carty has been a part of 13 playoff qualifiers, including two national championship seasons (2003 UD player and 2020 Sam Houston assistant coach).
...
Prediction – Delaware 27, Lafayette 21
Recall (earlier post) that Marker suffered a season-ending injury in the Villanova game and O'Connor is, at best, doubtful.

He also has a preview of the top half of the opening bracket.

Lucked into a replay of the Howard–NC Central game, which Howard dominated 50-20. Was totally underwhelmed by both teams. I know NCC managed to beat two CAA teams [Campbell (5-6), +1 in OT] and [Elon (6-5), +11] ... so there is some hope. But at (8-3), the Spiders are way tougher than either Campbell or Elon. I don't think NCC has the depth of athletes (and only spotty speed/quickness) to hang with Richmond. (One of my picks, FWIW.)

Gloat, gloat ... although, honestly, I thought the NC Central call was a no-brainer. But I also had Chattanooga topping Austin Peay, and that happened too.

Of course, those of you who had Sac State over North Dakota also got a win. :thumb:
