Update: Jack McGillis at Oregon State

I do not know Jack McGillis but I am a Montana native and a huge griz fan. Letting a kid like McGillis get away hurts us because Montana kids play their guts out for Montana teams and you can get a lot more out of a kid that plays that way. I've heard many many good coaches say "Give me a kid with great attitude, heart and desire over a marginally more talented kid any day." There has been a ton of conversation about this team lacking intensity and hustle. Who has Tinkle turned to to help lead in this area? A Montana kid. Hasquet! Look at Mike Chavez. He has handled adversity well over his career because of who he is but tell me that playing for Montana doesn't mean something to him. Kevin Criswell (do I need to say more?) I hear a lot of people talk about attendance. I think fans turn out to see Montana kids play because it means so much to them and it creates excitement. I'd have loved to see Henkel, McGillis, and Hasquet all playing for this team. I guarantee you that the attendance would have increased and the effort and intensity would be there. It irks me to see a quality Montana kid get away. Good Luck Jack McGillis and I'm looking forward to the Derik Selvig era starting next season.

Good for Jack blah blah blah....
As some one who went to school with him for a long time the truth is Jack is an A** HOLE he has a huge ego and is and all around nasty person
Yes he is a good basketball player but ones integrety matters more then ball skillz!!

If getting into a vehicle intoxicated and getting caught doing it is adversity then I dont know what this world is coming to.

Jack is definitely the opposite of a nasty person. Very nice, soft spoken guy. He is just quiet and that sometimes rubs people as being a jerk I guess. Anyway, let's not take pot-shots at his character...

Jack has improved a lot since high school. He has put a ton of work in and would definitely be getting some time for the Griz. He is NOW better then a Swift or Mayes (believe me, this is a consensus from players). But I don't blame Montana for not going after him because he wasn't a D-1 player when he graduated...., hell, he didn't even win the Gatorade Player of the Year Award. It went to his teammate, Charlie Cox.

I think that was more of a lifetime acheivement award more than deserving, not saying he didnt deserve it because he did, but he started 4 years for Hellgate. Impressive either way you cut it

Jack backed-up his 1 pt,1 rebound game agianst UCLA with a 2 pt, 1 rebound game against Arizona. He did not start either. The legend continues to impress.

Again I've never met Jack or know anything about him personally. I just don't think in any way, shape or form that he's good enough to play for the Griz and those that continue to content he is are obviously blinded by bias. The Griz are playing for a conference title because of Stuart Mayes' and Mike Chavez' strong contributions. OSU is a doormat because Jack McGillis is their best option.

There is now no question that Jordan Hasquet is light years ahead of McGillis too.

Zirg,

Did you watch the game or just look at the box score? The reason i ask is I have watched several of Jack's game and they never involve him in the offense. He is always on the weak side. I think Jack could play at Montana without a doubt, maybe not a star, but he is a lot better than what he looks like given the role he has in OSU's offense. There is no bias onmy part either. I have no dog in this hunt. :twocents:

I watched the UCLA game and he looked awful. Did not do one thing well in that game. I'm watching the OSU-Arizona game right now. McGillis just had his shot blocked going to strong to the hole and got a foul trying to battle for a rebound. That is ALL he has done so far. He looks terrible. I mean I don't know how anyone can watch this and not agree, he doesn't belong. He did not start again.

I concur 100% on the UCLA game, but games earlier in the season he looked pretty good to be honest. I didn't watch today, that OSU team has lost their will it seems. I cannot watch teams that don't compete.

keep in mind that jack is playing against UCLA who was ranked #1 in the nation earlier this year. arizona is historically pretty good. i think they've got a decent coach. our guys just beat the cats in a close one and stuart looked good. i can't remember, have the cats been in the top 25 this year? just wondering.

OSU is a doormat because Jack McGillis is their best option?????
Zirg, as much as I would like to attack you personally, I won't. I have learned from my mistakes. But why do you keep focusing on him not starting? He is a true Sophomore in the Pac 10. He is the one that was not good enough to play for the Cats or the Griz and now he's getting criticized for not 'Starting' in the Pac 10 as a Sophomore. Granted, OSU has had a rough season to say the least, but when they are playing well, they can and have competed with most of the Pac. Jack has had his up games and his down ones as most players do, but when he is on, he has shown some great talent. Since you pointed out his blocked shot lastnight;which was more of a miss than a block, did you happen to see his amazing blocked shot against Arizona or his drive and dunk against Arizona St? And I don't think we can completely write off Defense, can we? In nearly every game this year, Jack has played stellar Defense and if you notice, when in man to man, He always guards the opposing teams best player at the guard or forward position. Just my observations.

So, Jack isn't the Pac 10 MVP? Well, I guess that puts him in an exclusive category with...every other basketball player in Montana high school history. Who said he was a "legend?" He's just a very good Montana basketball player.

P.S. - Why tear down Jack to build up Hasquet? It's not necessary.

UCLA is a little better than Big Sky competition. Saying that Jack couldnt play for the Griz is retarded....seroiusly

Jack had his coming out party today against Cal, Jack goes for 26 points!!! :thumb:

Actually he went for 24...I know this because I got to watch this one as I live in California where the Pac 10 reigns over all else.

He looked good in this up until fouling out. However, I think if we are going to continue to comment on his progress it's more appropriate to do so in Random Shti, because his play has nothing to do with Grizzly Basketball.

This was a fun one to watch for sure.

Jack had a really nice game, could have been even better with out the foul touble. As a matter of fact he fouled out

If it is that big of a deal to you what category it is in why don't you ask the mods to move it. :werd:

Actually I don't want to carry this one over, as I think it started out as a spite thread, I think you should start a new one with a little bit more positive theme to it. I just think it would be wise to let this one die, as I continue to bump it, and start a new one.

I cheered for the kid to do well during the game. I have no reason not to cheer for him. Plus he makes the Pac 10 moderately interesting for me.

P.S. My comment was more of a continue with the updates, but start it where it should be than a Jack coulnd't play for the Griz dig
