Upcoming stars -- sophs

Who are some of the soph sensations in Montana? I've seen Bobby Howard out of GFH and think he's about as good as I've seen. Butte has a 6-8 soph, but I've yet to see him play. I hear he starts and he'll probably grow a couple more inches. Should be a 'can't miss' guy for DI at 6-10.

Not so fast, Dillon had a 6-10 player in the mid to late 90's who went to MCC or DCC and that's the last I ever heard about him. It's true that you can't coach height but you still need ability to play at the D1 level.

Great Falls High actually has two sophomores who start for them this season. Bob Howard and Shaun Tatarka. They both started as freshmen as well and Howard was second team All-conference in the east last season. This year he is averaging almost 17 ppg and is also leading the state in boards per contest, with a shade over 9 per. The kid from Butte's name is Jeff Edwards. He was a jv/varsity player last season, but just for development sake. I will admit that he is improved from last season to this one, but that isn't saying alot. I'm pretty sure he had no where to go but up, no pun intended. He is a legitimate 6'8 and hes a hell of a shot blocker. Butte runs a 2-3 zone with him in the middle just to utilize that strength, but he is VERY limited offensively. If he can work on his hands in the post, develop a shot and learn how to hold a defender on his back, offensively he could be a force in years to come. Weight room, good coaching, and hard work and he will be a prospect, but without those three things, even if his does grow to 6'10, he won't be a D-1 prospect at all.

Another soph on Butte High who is just starting to come around these last few games is 6'4" Tyler Gilder. He hustles, and has a real nice stroke from trey land, and has been giving Butte High some quality minutes lately and give Hildreth some rest. There is also a frosh for Butte High who is 6'6", Brandon Boltz. Butte High is gonna have a hell of a front line in two years.

Also, Jeff Edwards cousin is former Griz center Bobby Olson. If the kid turns out to be a stud we may have and inside track on him due to family connections.

and, Tyler Gilders father is major league pitcher Rob Nenn. Good bloodlines there, since I have heard Nenn was a hell of a roundballer himself in college.

Howard from GFH went off for 23 last night....some are saying that Tatarka is falling off....please correct me if im wrong??? And what about Hogan from kalispell? He gets no love from egriz?? there are alot of sophmores out there and it will be fun to watch in two years to watch all this play out. Final four would have to be Kalispell, Butte, GFH, and Big sky. and maybe throw a billings team in there. But dont take my word for it.

As far as sophomores go in the state of Montana, the two best are definitly Bob Howard and Shaun Tatarka of GFH. I played them numerous times in AAU basketball and i participated on a very good team. Having said that they were surrounded by very poor players and single handedly made their team one of the best in the state. Howard is a coache's son so his game is obviously sound and growing, and tatarka is one hell of a shooter. I specifically remember a tournament in which tatarka went down with a concussion and we played them afterwards and won by 20. Later in the weekend, he came back and we lost by 20. Definitly a difference maker. I agree with swilly, hogan from Kalispell is solid, the two kids from Butte are very good, Big Sky has two great sophs as well. 2007 should be exciting!

This was in the tribune a couple of months ago, so my memory is a little foggy, but it mentioned a 6'11'' soph or junior from Fairview. I'm not really sure if he's any good, but at nearly 7 feet tall you would think he would be getting looks.
