Thanks BW. Very nice write up. D Line needs to disrupt their QB's. Batted down balls and rushed throws are all we should need. Their receivers are BIG and do come back for off target balls - but this is not the same Griz D that played last year as far as experience and maturity. To top that off. - they practically had to stay on the damn field the entire game and we still only lost by a TD if memory serves me correctly. The Griz should dominate this game. Near as I can tell - the receivers and passing game are about the only major strengths the Offense has. Tough to get it done being very one dimensional (unless you are playing the Griz D from last year!). Sorry, but it is the truth. New year - Let's exorcise one of the demons. Go Griz!! Maybe that is the new mascot. University of North Dakota Demons. Too many beers. Time for bed.
Memory not correct here is the TOP
UM UND
Possession Time 30:03 29:57
1st Quarter 8:11 6:49
2nd Quarter 5:51 9:09
3rd Quarter 8:11 6:49
4th Quarter 7:50 7:10

Very interesting and thanks for correcting me. I believed the D was on the field an awful lot. Good stats and obviously not the case. Hopefully our TOP is more lopsided (in favor of the Griz) this game.
Don't worry about TOP, mute stat. Score is what matters.
Thanks Madden

If you really want to compare the teams, go here http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings/ranking_summary

Pretty close when you look at the whole picture.

Statistically for now they are close.....however you have to factor matchups between teams when they compete against one another

just have to remember if the value is a percent its comparable if it is a number as in the case of first downs defense it shows Montana 16, North Dakota 31. That is a total not an average. Same goes for first downs offense, Montana has 22 and North Dakota 43.

No man due to how early in the season it is i dont think you can place too much value in statistics especially since montana having only played one game......and UND playing SDSU and a joke of a team that is Valpo........there is just not enough data to compare the two teams statistically

You are right in one aspect, but we have both played a crappy team. Granted our crappy team was worse than your crappy team. You hit the nail on the head, but all the Griz want to hang their hat on beating the Might App State, when we know they really suck, proven by their second game. UND at least has something to look at with the SDSU game, if we only played Valpo I wouldn't have an idea if we are worth a shit or not. I am glad this game isn't at Montana that is more than your basic 3 point advantage, and I wish it was a Conference Game.

Good luck in the game, and at least whoever loses doesn't lose any ground in the Conference standings.

Great post, Brint. Oddly, I think #3 is the key to the game. Most people would say you gotta stop the pass against UND. But We all know UND will get yards via the pass. They're simply too good not to. But we've GOT to stop the run with our front 7. We cannot afford to have safeties help out in run support. If we have to have them creep down, we're in big trouble.

Totally agree, the Griz can't load the box very often with an extra defender against UND, that would just create a new BSC passing record, breaking last years hideous 660 yards.

UND's WR Hardin tracks the ball better than anyone I've ever seen in the FCS. He's the fastest guy on the field when he is tracking the ball in the air, he does it so well. I don't envy our secondary this Saturday.

If you're a team that likes to load the box with a strong safety, you better have atleast one lock-down corner to the boundary, so that you can roll your free safety to the field, or you are in some serious danger of getting beat deep on both sides of the ball.

And UM hasn't had that caliber (lock-down) of CB since Trumaine Johnson.

That's certainly one way to twist someone's words......Im just saying its pointless to compare the teams statistically this early in the season based on the teams not having played enough FCS games....however that being said i believe the griz are gonna beat UND like rented mules :thumb:

wait, Appy St sucks and valpo doesn't? 1 is a FBS program, 3 time Natl Champ, the other is a NON-Scholly pioneer team that Eden Prairie MN HS could beat? I see zero logic in this.

the method to winning is clear for Montana, run the ball down their throat, blitz early and hit the QB hard, he couldn't even get past round 1 in small town Minnesota football. Play a nickel all game, you have zero worries with their run game/o-line.

Ailing trenchmen

Part of UND’s rushing woes center on the health of the offensive line. Starting center Shea Walker has played only four snaps this year with an injury. His return this week is questionable. The team is also hoping Northern Illinois transfer Dustin Adams will be available in the coming weeks after suffering an injury in the offseason.

“Shea is an important part of our offense,” Schleusner said. “We’re hoping to restore some depth and then be able to run the ball more effectively.” Montana, however, will be a difficult opponent in which to right the running game. The Griz allowed only 328 yards of total offense against then-No. 6 Appalachian State in Week 1. Montana is led defensively by linebacker Jordan Tripp, one of the best at his position in the Big Sky Conference.

“They’re big up front,” Schleusner said. “The front seven is as good as any we will face all season. They have a few kids there that will be at NFL training camps when they’re done.”
Schleusner said the running game will have to be creative.

The problem with looking backwards is that the conditions are constantly changing. Lose a key player (McGhee or a Peacock) and the comparisons instantly change in a way that can't be measured. I am sure that UND is quite proud of their near moral victory/comeback against the No. 6 team in the nation. And the Griz were able to decimate the 12th ranked team to such an extent that they were shocked into losing their game against A&T. Another fine example of the curse of the Grizzly.
The real issue of Saturday's game is going to be two factors - Can we get to the QB enough times that he doesn't want to take a snap because he knows he is going to get creamed again, and do our DBs go for the interception on wobbly thrown balls. I don't doubt for a minute that their star receiver is going to make a catch or two for some significant gains. But if he is (as almost everyone thinks) the center piece of their offense, that could be all she wrote for UND to secure another victory. He just may get tired of doing wind sprints down the field only to look back and see his QB flat on his back instead of throwing the ball.

Never said valpo doesn't suck they do, and as far as 3 time national champ who cares. I was second at nationals wrestling in 1980, could I do it now? No way. Means absolutely nothing. Does SDSU suck?

This will be a great game. All of can sit here and spout off why we think their team will win, but it doesn't matter. Play the game, have fun at the game, and give each other a little crap without getting pissed off.

There are some good fun people on this forum.

By the way if there are any Griz players coming through Fargo, and maybe staying the night, pm me and we can have a drink at Fargo Billiards. We can bullshit about the game.

Remember how ASU's receivers were supposed to be the best we'd see all year?

Remember when Londry-Jackson was going to just shred our secondary?

True, they played without their best WR....we also played without a starting CB, our starting NT and a couple other knuckleheads who got into some trouble.

There is ONE position that will be key during this game. QB. We have ours back. They're starting a RS Freshman. We could get over 300 yards rushing and absolutely OWN the TOP. Combine that with their small(ish) offensive line, and I see lots of pressure on their young QB, hurried throws (ala ASU) and a walkover for UM. This is not last year's Griz team.

That AZGrizFan guy is a fucking genius. 8-)

SDSU owned the clock (35:37 to 24:23 TOP), had 4 sacks, 2 int's and a fumble recovery. If our team plays like that, we'll waltz out of Grand Forks with a W.

They did all that and won by just 7, stopping UND on a drive that would have tied the game.

We're not SDSU. 8-) 8-)

We aren't, they're ranked higher than us, went 9-4 last year and won a playoff game before falling to NDSU in the 2nd round.

You want that plate of crow served hot or cold, Brint? 8-)
