Uniforms This Week

I have a vague recollection that in the ever continuing changing uniform saga that it was a wife who pushed hard for a change. :?: Can't recall if it was George's, Don's or somebody elses?
It may have been Jane Dennison. She was big on the "old colors" -- maroon, silver ...

I agree wholeheartedly ! Wife and I both like it better with the names on the back. :thumb:

Are you saying you forget your wife's name when you're behind her?

It is absolutely astonishing to me how many people didn't know that maroon and silver were the original athletic colors of the Montana Grizzlies, but at the same time, say they absolutely hated the copper and gold. Like, my question is, when you were watching the Griz play in 1995, and you didn't know that they used to be maroon and silver, then what colors did you wish the Griz were? Blue and Gold? Green and white? It just doesn't make sense.

Me on the other hand, it took me a coupel of games, maybe even the entire 1996 season to warm up to the change back to maroon and silver, simply because prior to 1996, copper and gold was all i knew, and all i knew was i absolutely loved the Griz and those were their colors.

I'm having trouble here. Help me out.

CDA, I wasn't born in 1966, so i never saw the Griz play in maroon and silver until 1996. I was told, while attending UM that they used to wear those colors, but as a Griz fan, all I had ever seen them n was copper and gold. guess i should have worded it differently.

I have to agree, my dad took me to a game in 1995 when I was 12. EKU got romped and I became a Griz fan that day. I do not like the Maroon and Silver although I will admit that I understand the marketing benefits of Maroon and Silver as opposed to Copper and Gold. I understand why someone wouldn't like the Copper and Gold as well. It's your opinion and you're entitled to it just like I am that the only ones I will ever like are the 95' colors. I really like the matte maroon helmets but nothing like the old yellow ones. Also, if anyone dislikes the old colors and wanted to get rid of an old color jersey or helmet I would pay top dollar so that you wouldn't have to see the ugly old colors anymore. I'm that kind of nice guy.

The "old" colors aren't attractive.

What they wore Saturday fuckin' rocked.

I've been trying to locate photos of the pre-1968 UM football attire, hard to do. Esp trying to find color photos. I don't recall the maroon theme being nearly as emphasized as today's handsome unis. It seems to me like it was maroon trim, white tops, with white pants/black pants. Pretty conventional.

I did run across this interesting article.

Typical was maroon home jerseys; white on the road with contrasting numbers. From about '63 through '67, there was a tiny bit of the yellow/gold used to highlight the numbers; white pants and helmets. Prior to about '63 the pants were gray/silver with gray/silver helmets and a maroon Riddell stripe. Think Terry Dillon...

Love the copper and gold! Like the silver and maroon as well. If I had to choose one, however, it would definitely be the maroon and silver

Stilwtrgrizz, you're not that old lol. The University of Montana's athletics colors were maroon and silver from 1893-1967. While the "official school colors" were copper and gold. In 1967, head football coach and athletic director Jack Swarthout, who personally preferred the maroon and silver used by the football team, sought to make the schools colors more consistent and held a vote among UM coaches. They selected Texas orange (burnt orange to represent copper) and yellow gold to be used on the school's uniforms and it remained for the next 30 years.

The maroon was brought back in 1993 as part of the university's centennial celebrations and a student survey in 1995 showed support for a return to maroon and silver uniforms. Despite some vocal opposition, by 1997 the colors began to phase into the maroon and silver that continues to be used.

Today, copper and gold is once again, officially listed as a school color, but it's now known as a "spirit color".
Maroon was still in use for the '67 season; the change to burnt orange/babysh!t yellow was made for the '68 season. Swarthout had connections with Daryl Royal at Texas and may have had access to inside info regarding the availability. There was no "phasing" back to maroon and silver; it was maroon and silver starting in 1996. The Marshall fans were quite surprised to see the change from '95 to '96.

This uniform thread has everything save for the calls for all blacks. Can someone please call for an all black uniform and then follow it up with a thing about modern kids? Let's do this right.

Don't choke on your Geritol old Men! Nothing would be sweeter than all black jerseys with black numbers, black socks, black helmets with black facemasks with a black Griz emblem! Total fuckin' gansta! Recruits would love it. Try and pick out those player numbers, Kem!

Well, just to drive it home to those who hate "threads" and are sarcastic about them, in the mid-1990s, when Campus Rec was embarking on a new expansion -- which resulted in an outstanding student rec facility by the way, a key recruiting tool for general students -- and did the intelligent thing and hired experienced outside consultants, the consultants did all sorts of surveys and focus groups. One of the interesting complaints to come up (Rec Center was at that time trimmed in Texas Orange and Gold which didn't really translate all that well into "paint") was the offended comment from some bright, young, sensitive 90's thing, "why is everything painted in those awful 70's colors?"

The Director of Campus Rec, Keith Glaes, had to respond: "Those are ... the school colors."
