Uniforms This Week

Guess I'm the exception. I thought today's unis -- and those abominations worn by the cheer squad -- were just a good reminder of how ugly the Swarthout colors were.

You're not the exception among many hardcore fans. I love our throwbacks for special occasions, they remind us of our great tradition, but I've really embraced maroon.

The uni's looked a lot like Wyoming...IMO.

I have a buddy who is colorblind, too. He gets all confused. Is MSU still rocking the solo M on their helmets as the only state college in the nation that does so?

That's cool! Good to see State College stop doing the M thing on the helmets. I'm sure you can agree it was pretty pathetic.

Why are you STILL up? Get back in bed or your father is going to hear about it and you won't like it!

Stilwtrgrizz, you're not that old lol. The University of Montana's athletics colors were maroon and silver from 1893-1967. While the "official school colors" were copper and gold. In 1967, head football coach and athletic director Jack Swarthout, who personally preferred the maroon and silver used by the football team, sought to make the schools colors more consistent and held a vote among UM coaches. They selected Texas orange (burnt orange to represent copper) and yellow gold to be used on the school's uniforms and it remained for the next 30 years.
The story I heard was that Swarthout wanted to get new uniforms, the old ones were coming apart, but there was no money in the budget. He was calling around trying to get a deal, when one of the manufacturers had accidentally produced a double order for Texas, the Longhorns ("yeah, we've got a whole team's worth of uni's here if you want them, but they're "Texas Orange") and so UM got a huge deal on uniforms that happened to be "Texas Orange," and added some yellow/gold trim to the numbers, and sewed on "Montana." It was just too good to pass up. Conveniently, the school colors changed. They may well have then taken a vote among the coaches, but Swarthout wanted the new uniforms, and so "Texas Orange" it was.

The picture is included because I happen to like "Texas Orange."

Is the GSA going to make it an option to purchase the jerseys like they did a few years back? Money is gonna stay in my pocket if they don't I guess.

Matte burnt copper helmets would be a nice combination piece too!

Kind of like syracuses but more copper/Texas orange

Actually that does make a lot of sense. Never knew why the "griz" had orange heresies!

The only ones that never made any sense to me were those God awful black ones we donned for the playoffs a few years back. Texas Orange at least is similar to Copper, kinda, sorta, maybe.

I believe it was Sports Information Director George Fultz who attempted to claim, not sure it was with a straight face, that Texas Orange was actually sort of copper.

I have a vague recollection that in the ever continuing changing uniform saga that it was a wife who pushed hard for a change. :?: Can't recall if it was George's, Don's or somebody elses?

UM's come a long ways from Jack Swarthout scrounging around to replace three year old uniforms and taking advantage of an ordering error somewhere else to get a team set practically free -- requiring a change in the school colors -- to a program that can afford four uniform designs per season (but then "saves money" by not putting the player's names on the backs).
