UNC/SDSU Game Thread

Beitzel is a great player, and they have a few decent complimentary pieces. But all year unc has scored by getting to the FT line. Guess what? That just doesn't happen in the NCAA tournament. unc has shot only 3 FTs in the game. If the NAU and UM games had been officiated like these, unc doesn't get past the semis.

Post of the Season! :thumb:

Congrats to the Bears on a great season...they did not embarrass the big Sky today. Same to the Griz on having a great year!

Nice game from Beitzel. I wonder why UNC only shot 8 FTs though? It could have never been officiating that actually let 2 teams play. Anyone care to shed some light on that? :)

No disrespect to you votb, but is this really something we should settle for? Is it really something to be proud of: well, at least our league representative didn't embarrass the conference??

Man, I long to be out of this conference and into one with aspirations, even if it means taking it on the chin for 4 or 5 years. The "we're too little", "all we can do is hope to play close for half", attitudes that pervade the Big Sky Conference drive me effin crazy.

I agree with your sentiment. At the same time anytime you are a 15+ seed playing close is an accomplishment, and UNC played pretty well overall kudos to them in their first tournament, I was pleasantly surprised and proud for their effort.

So what we really want is a conference where we are not normally a 14+ seed, but rather a 11- seed that is expected to have a chance. The good news is the Griz have the power to do this in this conference. It starts with no NAIA teams on the schedule, and more support (money) for the team, and most importantly is the attitude that Everettgriz has - we will not accept "can't". Unfortunately the last guy in the athletic department that had that attitude fired Holst and was roundly ridiculed by the booster for saying Montana "can". So maybe it starts with a change in the boosters to get away from the good ol Montana boy network, and step the program up.

Lastly, regarding the officiating in the BSC tournament. It was terrible. No surprise, and not unusual, nor unique to the BSC. And frankly the Griz could/should have overcome it. If they were truly a NCAA tournament contender (13 seed or lower), they would have, but they didn't. But more than that, it wasn't NCAA tournament pace officiating job. BSC teams (and west coast in general) suffer due to being coddled by officials all year, and are shocked at the contact when they get to the tournament. This is something the conference can control, by instructing officials to let the games be more physical. The BSC does its' team no favors by not allowing the more physical play, and again this is something the conference can change to help improve the conference.

Lastly, Congrats again to UNC on their play today. Even without 30+ foul shots they kept it close most of the way due to 3 point shooting accuracy. DB is a hell of a player.

Thanks.

Beitzel was impressive. he made a lot of fans today, hard not to root for that kid :thumb:

Thanks GB. He's a great player and I'll miss watching him play.

This has been rather interesting to read. My point about the Bears "not embarrassing the Big Sky" was made because of all the posts after the BSC tourney about how UNC WOULD get beat in a landslide, that they WOULD embarrass the Big Sky, and that they had no right to be in the game instead of Montana...because they obviously were not as good, and would be incapable of playing well. I'd say for playing a #2 seed, they did fairly well.

I wish you guys all the luck in the world...if you wanna move up cause you're too good for the Big Sky, more power to you. You've certainly owned ISU in most sports for a long, long time. Like I tell my employees at work...I want them all to succeed and move on to bigger and better things if they can. The last thing I want is for them to be underachievers...not growing as they could, or should.

I gotta tell you Montana fans that there's no other school in the Big Sky with loyal fans like you guys. But I've also got to say that I've been in the sports broadcast world for over 30 years and I may be a crappy broadcaster...but I've got to tell you that one of the funniest things i ever heard was last fall when you all were talking about how you should leave the BSC for the WAC...then when things didn't look so good for the future of the WAC somebody posted that maybe somebody ought to check into getting into the Mountain West. It was a long time before I quit smiling. Great fans are great fans...but some just don't have a clue about reality.

I love UM...you guys consistently set the bar for the rest of us. I hope you stick around...but more power to you if you manage to get out. I don't think it would go well(not for quite awhile anyway)...but good luck.

No need to worry, or even talk about going anywhere, at least anytime soon. The WAC is not as attractive as it was. We shall see after more reshuffling over the next 3 to 5 years though.

FWIW, I was certainly never one to say that UNC would get crushed. Frankly, with their ability to shoot the ball, I thought they'd keep it closer than it actually turned out.

then when things didn't look so good for the future of the WAC somebody posted that maybe somebody ought to check into getting into the Mountain West. It was a long time before I quit smiling. Great fans are great fans...but some just don't have a clue about reality

And here, without meaning to do so, you've actually made my point perfectly, votb. I completely agree the Griz are not in a position to join the Mt West right now. And even if they were to do so in a few years, they'd likely get their nose rubbed in it for sometime before they were competitive. But should we not aspire to that nonetheless? It seems to me that Montana, by nearly all objective measure, has far outgrown the BSC, and staying here is doing little to help the program. Why wouldn't we desire to be in the Mt West? Is it a long-term proposition? Yes, but your comment is precisely what I cannot stand about BSC programs: the defeatist attitude that we're all too small to ever make it in a bigger setting. Shit, we should all just go play DII with that mental makeup.

UM has the major pieces in place on your team a good point guard and big man in the middle. You guys needed some more consistent outside scoring from the wings to be a complete team and make a run to the NCAA's.

Teams that are making runs in tournament that aren't the Tar Heals, Blue Devils, etc are usually senior laden and play smart basketball. If UM can develop its players to a point where they can make the tournament a few years in a row then better players will want to come play for the Griz and you can eventually make that jump.

This has to be more of the more compelling arguments I have read on eGriz in some time. Clearly UNC got to the line just a fraction of the number of times they did during conference play. The argument that they needed to shoot a ridiculous number of freethrows to have a chance to win gained some credence. It would be interesting to see how a BSC team would compete in the NCAAs if they were allowed/required to play a more physical brand of basketball during the regular season.

Imagine my dismay when I saw Scott Twardoski doing the K-State/Utah State game last night. My immediate thought was..."You've got to be kidding me!"
